Margaret

I shut the bedroom door behind me and walked to the dressing table without turning on the brighter lamp. The small light beside the mirror was enough to see by, and I preferred the room that way. I had been surrounded by people all day, first at the hospital and then at the courthouse, and I needed a few minutes without anyone asking me questions or watching my freaking face.

Bruce Marcello was still on my mind.

I had seen him the moment he entered the courtroom with Pedro and Darlene.

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Home With Me

Evelyn“Evie?”Damien called me back to the present.“I have.” My answer came more quickly than I expected, and I lowered my eyes to my plate. “I kept thinking about what I would do when you came home. Some days I was sure it would happen soon. Other days, I was afraid I would be waiting for much longer.”Damien drew his chair closer to mine. “What did you imagine we would do first?”“I thought I would bring you home, make you eat something decent, and let you sleep for a whole day.” I glanced at the remains of his meal and smiled. “So far, I’ve managed the first part.”His expression softened at the sight of my smile. He told me he had missed his bed, his books, and the freedom to decide what to do with an ordinary afternoon. Then he asked what I had missed most about having him around. The question caught me off guard, and I had to think before answering. I told him I had missed talking to him at the end of the day, hearing his

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Home Again

EvelynDamien wanted to leave the courthouse before the reporters gathered around us again. A few had called his name from the steps, and one woman had tried to ask whether he intended to sue the people responsible for his arrest. He ignored the questions and kept walking, holding my hand until we reached his car. I was glad to see him out, but the relief had not yet settled into anything ordinary. He was beside me, free to go home, and I still found myself looking at him to make sure he was really there.“Let’s get you something to eat,” I said when he started the engine.“I’m hungry, but I don’t want to sit in a restaurant with a camera pointed at my face.” He glanced at the reporters still gathered outside before pulling into the traffic. “They’ll follow us if we give them a chance. I’d rather eat at home.”I agreed, and we stopped at a restaurant along the way to buy food to take away. Damien asked what I wanted, then insisted on ord

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Evidence

KendallI saw Isaac while Damien was still kissing Evelyn. He was standing past the rope, near the taxis, with his hands in his coat. He was smiling. I did not like the smile. He was not trying to get past the cameras. When Damien came out onto the steps, Isaac smiled again. I knew then that whatever had happened, he had a hand in it. I kept my hand on Evelyn’s back and I did not tell her he was there. Raymond was already talking about the discharge papers. If I had said Isaac’s name on those steps, we would have ended up arguing in front of everyone.Evelyn left with Damien. Raymond had to go back to the station and file the copy. He kissed my cheek at the car and told me to eat something. I said I would. I waited until his car was gone, and then I walked over to the taxis.Isaac was still there. He looked at my mouth first, then at my eyes.“Did you have something to do with this?”“Not here.”He had a hotel room two streets away. He had taken it for the week. I knew I should not g

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    The Hearing

EvelynKendall’s call woke me before seven. I had slept in the grey dress because I had come in from Adrian’s house and had not had the will to hang it up, and the phone was still in my hand from a message I had not sent him.“Put the news on,” she said. “Damien’s case is up this morning. They are reviewing the case with Damien. We should get to court, Evie. Raymond has a seat if we get there before nine. I am outside.”That was a summary of all she said.I put the news on with one shoe in my hand. A woman in front of the courthouse said the prosecution had been ordered to answer inconsistencies in the timeline that placed Damien Cross near the scene of the crime on the night Paul died. They were having a hearing this very morning and that was so freaking fast! I washed my face, changed the dress, and went down. Kendall had the passenger door open. Raymond was in the back with a file on his knee. I could see the craze of expactancy on both their faces. As for me, I was still struggli

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    The Reason for Hate

MargaretShe came into the wrong room at the wrong hour, and she looked at me as if I had killed her mother with my hands. She did not tell the other two. She protected my name and hated me for the privilege. That is the daughter you keep trying to leash. The one you hate so much because from that day, I had to stay away from you, and so you blame her for taking me away. And as if that was not enough, she trapped your son in such deep love; she took him too.”“She was a child walking into adult business.”“She was a daughter walking into her father with his hand up your dress and his wife down the hall with a nurse. Do not clean it.” He was close enough now that I could smell the flight on his coat. “Of course, it was going to be over between us, but now the children were in love. And in order not to destroy their happiness since we so desperately wanted to stay away from each other, we decided to put up a marriage that will benefit both families. But you

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    A New Record

MargaretI had not slept in the hotel bed, and I had not slept any better since coming back to the house. Adrian was upstairs with the door shut. Better that way. If I saw him before I had decided what to do with him, I was going to say the thing that would make him lock it for a month, and I was not ready to be the woman shouting at a shut door in her own hall. The lawyer’s copy of Evelyn’s release sat in my bag. I had signed it to be done with the scene, not because I believed the scene was done. He had caught my wrist. In front of Doris. In front of that girl in a grey dress. I kept feeling the print of his fingers when I poured coffee I did not drink.Doris arrived before nine, which I had not invited. The man at the door let her through because she had been let through for months, and she came into the morning room with her face already ruined. No coat buttoned straight. No folder. She stood on the rug and cried the way she had cried on the phone from the
