Mag-log inCain froze.
The word still rang in his ears.
Mate.
Aria’s body went slack in Kael’s arms, her head lolling against his chest as her breathing turned shallow. Her body began to burn up rapidly and sweat began to cover her.
Kael caught her fully now, his grip tightening instinctively. "Aria," he called, shaking her slightly. "Aria, wake up."
Cain was already moving.
He walked the remaining distance towards taking fast strides that it felt like he was flying and within seconds he was with them.
"Let her go." he growled, his voice husky.
Kael looked up slowly.
"She collapsed," he said, his voice laced with concern. "She’s burning up–
Cain didn’t let him finish as anger got the better of him.
His fist connected with Kael's jaw, sending him staggering back. Aria slipped from Kael's grasp, but Cain caught her instantly, pulling her against his chest.
A low, dangerous growl rumbled from Cain’s throat as he pressed his forehead to Aria's.
"She’s mine," he snarled. "You don’t touch her. Ever."
Kael wiped blood from his lip, eyes dark, conflicted. "You heard it too, didn’t you?" he said hoarsely. "Her wolf stirred. She reacted to me. She called me mate.
"I might have rejected her, but her wolf recognizes me and want me."
Cain stiffened, his jaw tightened, his fist clenched– but only for half a second.
"You said it yourself, you rejected her so that doesn’t give you a right," he snapped. "You lost that right the moment you rejected her."
"Her wolf wants me!" Kael yelled. "You can't stop her."
"I don't care. She's mine now." Cain growled.
Some pack members and warriors of the left wing watched, whispers swing amongst them as they observed the tension arising from the two Alphas.
Lynn pushed past the crowd, and her eyes widened in horror as she saw Aria's unconscious figure.
"Aria, what happened to her?" she asked moving closer.
Cain turned sharply to her, "Get lady Mana. Now."
She didn't hesitate, not wasting another second she dashed towards the infirmary while Cain carried Aria heading towards his room in a fast but controlled speed.
Kael watched from behind, standing rooted to his spot, his eyes turning and burning with anger. His wolf pacing violently inside him.
"She called us mate," it growled. "Yet you allowed him take her away. You are a coward just like he said."
He clenched his fist. "I am not a coward. When I say she is mine, then she is." he muttered and stomped off.
********
Aria's eyes fluttered open and was met with two pairs of worried eyes- Cain's eyes.
"Aria... Can you hear me?" he asked, placing his hands on her forehead to check her body temperature.
She smiled slightly, raising her hands to his face. "Cain..." she muttered. "I miss you."
"I'm here with you and will never leave you." he muttered, holding her hand to his face.
She sat upright. "I felt my wolf closer yesterday, but it retracted so suddenly which caused-"
He placed his index finger on her lips, cutting her off. "Don't say anything. I understand. I can feel it."
"I feel light headed and blank in my head. Did anything happen before I went unconscious?"
Cain stared at her, his thoughts flew back to when she called Kael "Mate" and also to what Lady Mana said while she treated her.
He smiled amidst the confusion, the pain and the worry. "Don't you worry Mama, nothing happened. Just focus on gaining your strength.
"It's all for the better that you don't remember." he thought.
~~~~~~
Cain stood alone on the balcony of his room, the cold wind of the cool afternoon biting into his skin as his mind wandered and travelled to the event.
Mate.
The word clawed at him again.
He knew Aria didn't mean it, but he would be lying if he says the word hadn't torn through him, inflicting pain across his chest.
His wolf stirred uneasily. "She is ours. No one is changing that." it encouraged.
Cain closed his eyes and let out a tired sigh, wishing he was the one Aria had called mate. "Ohh, the word he had been opened to hear for a while now."
"I will not lose her," he whispered. "Not to him. Not to fate. Not to the Moon Goddess herself and not to any circumstances."
He remembered what Lady Mana had told him, as she stepped back from the bed slowly after having treated Aria. Her brows slightly drawn together.
Flash back.
"She will be fine. She needs sufficient rest and also avoid any action that will cause pain." Lady Mana said carefully, staring out the unconscious Luna.
Cain stiffened. "What do you mean by that?"
"Like the one with Alpha Kael." Lady Mana lowered her voice. "Her interaction with Alpha Kael caused her pain as her wolf carried the residue of his rejection. Her wolf is not rejecting you, Alpha. It's… confused."
Aria frowned weakly. "Confused how?"
Lady Mana hesitated, then sighed. "Her wolf recognizes two bonds. One broken and one claimed. As I said, the pain of the rejection, still lingers in the heart of her wolf. The wolf has forgotten even though it has been fated to yours because it was a rare instant second binding mate to another after rejection."
Cain’s fingers tightened into a fist.
"Any more contact with Alpha Kael might make her wolf forcefully come out which is very dangerous. If her wolf awakens fully without balance and without calmness," Lady Mana continued, "it could tear her apart from the inside or worse kill her."
Silence fell.
"So what do I do?" Cain asked.
Lady Mana met his gaze. "You protect her from stress, fear and especially–"
She paused
"– from Alpha Kael."
Cain nodded.
__
Cain let out a soft sigh. At that moment, he perceived a familiar scent and began to sense someone approaching.
"Kael." he hissed, leaving the balcony.
Aria sat in bed, as Lynn fed her some porridge so she could take the tonic prepared by Lady Mana.
She smiled upon seeing Cain, but he wasn't paying attention as he walked towards the door, disappearing behind it.
She frowned.
--
"What are you doing here Kael?" Cain whispered, not wanting to shout as he didn't want Aria to hear their conversation.
"What do you think? I'm here to see my mate." Kael replied. "And why are you standing in my way?"
"She is no mate of yours." Cain growled lowly.
Kael smirked. "I'm sure you heard so well, she called me her mate."
"Shut up." Cain muttered whisper yelled, raising his fist.
But Aria voice stopped him.
"What do you mean by I called you mate?" Aria asked, her question targeted at Kael.
Aria and her friends sat at their usual spot in the royal garden. The air was cool, and the sun remained hidden behind the clouds, giving the atmosphere a strange calmness.It had been a week since the incident with the dead maid happened.The rumors had reduced greatly, though a few people still pointed accusing fingers at Aria. Compared to before, more people supported her now—But that still did not change the fact that she needed to clear her name quickly."How come there are no clues to the incident?" Lynn sighed heavily. "Not even a witness.""The mastermind sure is smart— smart enough to cover up their tracks." Mariella added, biting her lower lip thoughtfully.Aria remained quiet.Her eyes were slightly squinted as she stared int space, absentmindedly tracing the rim of her teacup with her finger."You've always been easygoing and friendly with everyone, so who could possibly bear a grudge against you?" Lynn asked, raking her fingers through her hair in frustration."I can't t
Cain blinked repeatedly in confusion, his gaze moving back and forth between Aria and Beta Thorne until it finally settled on Aria.She tilted her head slightly to the side, her lips pressed into a straight line while her eyes widened a little as if silently asking how he still did not understand."Isn't your brother's name Matteo?" Cain asked.Aria nodded."...Then why is he... you know?" Cain muttered, his brows furrowing deeper as he pointed toward Beta Thorne, who stood quietly with his hands folded behind him."Ahhh, I see why you don't get it." Aria began. "His real name is Matthew, but my brother said he was going to call him Matteo instead because Matthew and Matteo sounded alike.""So because of that, everyone naturally began calling him Matteo." she explained.Cain slowly nodded as an understanding "ohhh" escaped his mouth.Then his gaze shifted toward Beta Thorne through the corner of his eyes, the side of his lips curling upward faintly."When you knew who she was, why did
Xer moved carefully through the Left Wing Pack, his form hidden beneath the uniform of a guard. His posture was relaxed enough not to draw attention, yet every step he took was calculated. His senses were fully alert, searching, tracing, reaching for something familiar.For Aria.He slowed his pace slightly, inhaling deeply, trying again to catch her scent.But there was nothing.Not even a faint trace lingering in the air.A deep frown settled on his face as unease began to build within him."Did something happen to her?" he asked quietly, worry threading through his voice.He paused mid-step, his thoughts racing until realization struck him."She has been marked by her mate." he muttered under his breath.Of courseHer scent would have changed completely.Xer clenched his jaw, frustration flashing across his face."Damn it." he cursed under his breath.There was no point lingering any longer.He turned and began to retrace his steps, heading toward the same secluded path he had used
Lady Mana straightened up after checking Maida one last time, then turned to face everyone in the room."She needs to rest. All of you should leave so she can recover comfortably."No one argued.Aria nodded slowly, wiping the last trace of tears from her face before turning away."Let's go." she mumbled to her friends.Lynn and Mariella followed closely behind her."I will have a quick word with Elder Gavin, then leave shortly." Cain said.Aria paused and looked back at him.Their eyes met.There was something unreadable in his gaze.She gave a small nod before turning again and walking out with her friends and Lady Mana.Elder Zaphi and Elder Namon exchanged brief glances before following after them, leaving the room quieter than before.Now, only Cain and Elder Gavin remained.Silence stretched between them.Heavy and tense.Cain's gaze slowly settled on Elder Gavin.Cold, sharp and dangerously hard."Have you lost your mind, Elder Gavin?" he asked, his voice low but cutting.Elder
Aria paced Maida's room restlessly, her friends standing behind her, watching with worried eyes.Her dress and hands were stained with Maida's blood. Though she was no longer crying uncontrollably, tears still welled in her eyes, threatening to fall at any moment.She didn't say a word.She just kept pacing.Her gaze never left Lady Mana, who was attending to Maida on the bed."Aria, just calm down. She will be fine." Lynn muttered softly."Yes, trust Lady Mana." Mariella added.Aria sniffed. "I know... but... she was poisoned."Lynn bit her lower lip, not knowing what else to say.Mariella pressed her lips into a thin line, her mind racing."What had happened during the time they were both alone?" she thought."Ria."Aria turned sharply at the familiar voice.Cain came rushing in— straight towards her.He looked dishevelled. His shoes were dirty, his clothes slightly rumpled, and even his hair was a mess like he had run all the way without stopping."Cain." Aria cried, her tears fina
The maid soon returned carrying a silver tray with a teapot and two delicate cups balanced carefully on it. She placed it gently on the table between them. As instructed by Aria, she served Maida first. Then, when she was about to pour Aria’s tea, her hands suddenly shook. The cup tilted. Hot tea spilled across the table and splashed lightly on Aria's gown. Aria gasped softly and quickly reached for a handkerchief, dabbing at the fabric. Luckily, it wasn't much. "How dare you?" Maida shouted, rising to her feet. Before anyone could react, her hand came down sharply across the maid's face. The loud slap echoed through the garden. The maid stumbled and dropped to her knees immediately. "Please forgive me, my Luna." she pleaded, her voice trembling. "You still dare to plead for forgiveness?" Maida shouted, fury flashing in her eyes. "Guards—" "It's okay!" Aria cut in sharply. Maida froze. "It spilled on me, not you, so you don't need to get so worked up." Ari
"Why do you look like someone who was chased in the dream?" Cain said coming into the room.Aria turned her head sideways, taking a good look at him. She smiled at him. "I wasn't been chased, instead, I ran thousand miles to see you right in front of him." she replied, blinking softly with pouted l
"Alpha, you promised to sort things out with Alpha Kael, but it still the same as ever. The pack members are managing the little they have." An elder complained. "The right wing pack cut ties with us. New moon pack is being divided by Alpha Kael– my brother." Cain replied, resting his hand on his
The words echoed through Aria’s mind like thunder striking stone."One must died by the other fangs."They rolled again and again, louder, heavier, until it felt like the world itself trembled beneath her feet.Suddenly, the invisible force holding the two massive wolves in place shattered.Cain's
