CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX: NEW REALITY

I wake up gasping.

My alarm is blaring. The sun is streaming through my window. Everything feels normal. Safe. Real.

But wrong. So wrong.

I sit up in bed. Look around. This is my apartment. I think. But I don't remember it. Don't remember anything before this moment.

Who am I? Where am I? What's my life?

Then it hits me. Like a flood. Memories. Not mine. Someone else's. Planted. Fake.

I'm Aurora Sinclair. Twenty-five. I work at a coffee shop. I live alone. I have no family. No past. Just this simple, quiet life.

But it feels like a lie. Like I'm supposed to be someone else. Someone important. Someone powerful.

I shake it off. Get ready for work. Try to ignore the feeling that I'm forgetting something crucial.

The coffee shop is busy when I arrive. I tie on my apron. Start making drinks. Fall into a rhythm I don't remember learning.

Then he walks in. The first one.

Tall. Dark hair. Silver eyes that make my heart skip. He looks at me like he knows me. Like he's been searching for me.

"Hi," he says. Voice rough. Familiar. "Can I get a black coffee?"

"Sure." I try to stay professional. But my hands shake as I pour. "Name for the order?"

"Kai." He smiles. Sad. Hopeful. "Just Kai."

Something about that name. About him. Feels right. Important. Mine.

I hand him the coffee. Our fingers touch. Electricity shoots through me. Heat. Recognition. Need.

He feels it too. I see it in his eyes. The shock. The connection. The impossible pull.

"Do I know you?" I ask.

"I think you do." He looks at me intensely. "Or you did. In another life. Another reality. Another version of us."

"That doesn't make sense."

"I know." He takes his coffee. "But I'll be back. Tomorrow. And the day after. Until you remember. Until we both remember."

He leaves. And I'm shaking. Confused. Drawn to a stranger who doesn't feel like a stranger at all.

The second one comes at lunch. Different but similar. Same pull. Same recognition.

Blonde. Green eyes. Business suit. He orders a cappuccino. His name is Damon.

And when our hands touch, I feel it again. That impossible connection. That sense of belonging.

"You feel it too," he says. Not a question. A statement.

"I don't know what I feel."

"Yes you do." He leans closer. "We're connected. Bonded. Meant for each other. You just don't remember yet."

"Remember what?"

"Everything." He touches my face. Gentle. Reverent. "Give it time. It'll come back. We'll come back."

He leaves too. And I'm more confused than ever.

The third appears at closing. Red eyes. Vampire. I should be scared. But I'm not.

His name is Zephyr. And he looks at me like I'm precious. Like I'm everything.

"I've been looking for you," he says. "For weeks. Since I woke up in this new reality with memories of you. Of us. Of what we had."

"We had something?"

"We had everything." His voice breaks. "And then you sacrificed yourself. Reset reality. Gave us this new world. But I can't live in it without you. Not really. Not when I remember."

"I don't remember." I'm crying now. "I don't know you. Any of you. But I feel like I should. Like I'm supposed to."

"Then trust that feeling." He kisses my hand. "Trust us. Trust yourself."

He disappears into the night. And I close up shop. Walk home. Try to process.

But I can't sleep. Can't stop thinking about them. About Kai. Damon. Zephyr. About the fourth one who hasn't appeared yet but will. I know he will.

I dream that night. Of battles. Of love. Of four men who are mine in ways I can't explain.

I dream of a daughter. A granddaughter. A family I sacrificed everything to save.

I dream of being powerful. Divine. The First.

And when I wake up, I'm sure of two things. One, those weren't dreams. They were memories. Real memories.

And two, something is wrong with this reality. Something dangerous. Something that's going to destroy everything if I don't stop it.

I go to work again. Wait for the fourth. Wait for the last piece.

He comes at noon. Dark. Divine. Beautiful. Erebus.

He doesn't order coffee. Just stares at me. "You're starting to remember."

"Yes." I don't deny it. "Pieces. Flashes. Enough to know this isn't right. This isn't real."

"It's real." He moves closer. "Just different. Rebuilt. Reset. You gave us a second chance. A new beginning."

"But at what cost?" I ask. "What did I lose? What did we all lose?"

"Everything. And nothing." He touches my face. "The old reality is gone. But we're still here. Still connected. Still bound by something deeper than memory."

I lean into his touch. Feel the rightness of it. The completion. "What happens now?"

"Now we remember together." He looks at the others. Kai. Damon. Zephyr. All entering the shop. All surrounding me. "All of us. We piece it back together. We reclaim what we had. We choose each other again."

They circle me. My four mates. In this life and every life. I feel it now. The bonds. Weak but there. Growing stronger.

"I'm scared," I whisper. "What if I can't be who I was? What if I'm not enough?"

"You're always enough." Kai kisses me. Soft. Perfect. "In every reality. In every version. You're ours. And we're yours."

Damon kisses me next. "We'll help you remember. Help you become."

Zephyr. "We'll love you through it. Through everything."

Erebus. "We'll never let you go. Never lose you again."

I'm crying. Kissing them back. Feeling whole for the first time since waking up.

Then the coffee shop explodes. Not literally. But reality cracks. The walls shimmer. The floor ripples.

And through the cracks, I see it. The old reality. The one I reset. Bleeding through. Trying to reclaim me.

"What's happening?" I gasp.

"The reset is failing." Erebus looks terrified. "You didn't die. Not completely. Part of you survived. And it's pulling both realities together. Merging them. Destroying them."

"How do we stop it?" Kai demands.

"We don't." A voice speaks from the cracks. Female. Young. Familiar. "We embrace it. Let both realities merge. Become one. Create something new."

A girl steps through. Five years old. Silver hair. Brown eyes. My granddaughter. Hope.

"Hope?" I breathe. "You're here?"

"I'm everywhere." She smiles. "In both realities. Both versions. Both timelines. And I have a message for you, Grandma."

"What message?"

She looks at me with ancient eyes. "You can't have both. You have to choose. The old reality with all your memories and powers and pain. Or this new one with peace and simplicity and starting over. But you can't have both. And whatever you choose, you lose something. Forever."

The cracks widen. Both realities pulling at me. Tearing me apart.

"Choose," Hope says. "Before both worlds collapse and everyone dies. Again."

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

Day three. I haven't slept in forty-eight hours. Every time I close my eyes, I see the bird. Disappearing. Dying. Because of me. The Reaper doesn't care about my guilt. Just grabs my hands. Just starts the power flow. Just continues the training like I didn't murder something innocent yesterday. "Today you learn resurrection." She announces. I freeze. "What?" "You can kill with death magic." She explains. "That's one side. But death has another side. The return. The reversal. The bringing back. Your father mastered this. That's how he came back. That's how he's been building his army. He resurrects the dead. Makes them serve him. Uses them as weapons. You need to learn the same. To counter him. To understand him. To match him." "I don't want to bring things back." I protest. "That's wrong. That's unnatural. That's—" "Necessary." She interrupts. "Your father will have an army of the dead. You need to be able to counter that. To reverse his resurrections. To send them back

Just continues breaking me so I can be rebuilt. "Today you learn to direct death." She instructs. "Yesterday you learned to hold it. To let it in. To survive it. Today you learn to aim it. To release it. To kill with it." "I don't want to kill anything." I protest. "You will." She says flatly. "Your father won't hold back. Won't hesitate. Won't give you time to decide. You need to be able to kill on instinct. Without thinking. Without doubt. Or you die. And everyone else dies with you." The magic flows. Stronger than yesterday. Hotter. Colder. More. My mates watch from a safe distance. I made them promise to stay back. To not interfere. To let me train even if it looks bad. Now I regret that promise. "Feel the death inside you." The Reaper guides. "The power you absorbed yesterday. The

They're staring at me like I'm a ghost. Like I'm impossible. Like I'm everything they lost wearing skin they don't recognize. Maybe I am. "The memorial wall is this way." Damon gestures. Voice careful. Like I might break. Like I might disappear. Like I might stop being whatever they think I am. I follow. Because the dreams won't stop. Because the memories that aren't mine won't fade. Because these four strangers feel like home and I need to understand why. The wall is black marble. Names etched in gold. Aurora Sinclair at the top. Largest. Most prominent. Most honored. "She's why we built this." Kai explains. "She suffered invisibly for years. For us. She died so we could live. This foundation is her legacy. Her memorial. Her eternal impact." I reach toward the wall. Toward her name. Toward Aurora. My fingers touch the cold marble. Everything explodes. Memories. Thousands of them. Flooding. Drowning. Destroying me. Building me. Breaking me. Making me. I see myself d
