Rejected Luna, Secretly the Werewolf Council's Vice Chair

Chapter 1

My father braced one hand against the moonstone floor and tried to stand.

Blood slipped between his fingers.

Evelyn did not look concerned. Her eyes dropped to the dark stain spreading beneath him.

“Mr. Vale, please be careful.”

She pointed at the silver crescent carved into the floor.

“That is the Moon Goddess’s sacred seal. Blood stains are difficult to remove.”

My mother's lips trembled.

She lowered her head, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I'm sorry."

Her custom-made gown was soaked in wine. Angry red welts from the Firethorn extract spread across her cheeks.

She picked up a clean cloth and quietly wiped my father's blood from the stone floor.

"We didn't mean to cause any trouble."

She was the one who had been humiliated.

Yet she was the one apologizing.

I knew why.

My parents had spent their entire lives as outsider Omegas.

I'd grown up watching them bow their heads, swallow every insult, and smile through every humiliation just to survive.

They believed Lucian and I were different.

That we were fated mates.

That once I completed the Marking Ceremony and became his Luna, I would never have to live the life they had.

They swallowed every ounce of humiliation because they thought it would protect my future.

Evelyn sighed.

“I did mention earlier that the Moon Goblets had a little surprise built in to liven things up.”

She turned toward the guests.

“It was meant to make the ceremony more festive.”

Whispers spread through the Moon Hall.

“Typical outsider Omegas.”

“They probably have never attended a proper Alpha ceremony.”

My wolf snarled inside me.

She did it on purpose.

I stepped toward Evelyn. “You never warned them about the Firethorn in the goblets.”

Before I could say anything else, Lucian stepped in front of me.

“Evelyn has already explained what happened.”

His voice was low, but his Alpha authority rolled through the hall.

Then he leaned closer.

“Your parents said they were fine.”

“It was a harmless prank, Selene.”

His gaze swept over the pack members watching us.

“Everyone was laughing until you decided to turn it into a scene.”

I stared at him.

He was not angry because my parents had been humiliated.

He was angry because I refused to smile through it.

My father reached out and lightly tugged at my sleeve with his uninjured hand.

“Selene, leave it.”

His face had gone pale, but he still forced a smile.

“Your mother and I will clean ourselves up.”

My mother nodded quickly.

“This is your Marking Ceremony.”

“Do not argue with your mate because of us.”

They were covered in wine and blood.

Yet they were still trying to protect my happiness.

Evelyn looked at my parents’ ruined clothes.

“The guest lounges are occupied.”

She spoke as though she had only just remembered.

“There is a supply room behind the kitchens. You can clean up there.”

My mother’s hands stilled, the cloth slipping from her fingers as she went completely rigid.

“A supply room?” I asked.

Her eyes went wide.

“I am trying to help.”

Lucian looked at me.

“Take your parents to the supply room.”

My father slowly pushed himself upright.

Blood soaked through the cloth wrapped around his palm.

“The supply room is fine,” he said.

My mother helped him stand.

“We will be quick.”

Evelyn pointed toward the servants’ corridor.

“This way.”

A few people laughed as we passed.

“They should be grateful the Alpha allowed them inside at all.”

“An Omega family becoming relatives of an Alpha. What luck.”

The supply room was narrow and cold.

Broken chairs, cleaning bottles, and boxes of candles covered the walls.

The moment the door closed, my father collapsed onto an old crate.

A quiet groan escaped him.

My mother hurried to the sink and wet a towel.

When she touched it to her burned cheek, her entire body shook.

She forced a smile. “We are fine.”

My father nodded.

“Go back before the Moon Blessing.”

“You have waited a long time to become Luna.”

I looked at them.

At my father’s bleeding palm.

At my mother’s blistered skin.

Only a few hours earlier, theWerewolf Council had appointed me as its youngest Vice Chair.

The announcement had not yet been released.

Lucian did not know. No one in the Silvercrest Pack knew.

I had wanted him to see me as his mate, not as a Council authority.

Now I finally understood how he saw me.

A low-ranked Omega who would accept anything for the privilege of becoming his Luna.

I reached into the pocket of my cloak.

My fingers closed around the silver Council sigil.

I had promised myself I would never use my position to settle a personal matter.

But this was no longer about me.

I activated the seal and sent one message.

“Come to Silvercrest Pack immediately.”

Then I looked toward the closed door.

Lucian wanted the ceremony to continue.

It would.

Just not in the way he expected.

After the Moon Judgment, the Council arranged a residence for me inside the Council Citadel. My parents came with me. The healers of the Citadel personally treated their injuries, and the Council made sure they wanted for nothing.Three days later, Lucian finally found me.His carriage stood near the gate.He held a carefully wrapped parcel in his arms.Inside was a ceremonial dress almost identical to the one my mother had worn that night. There was also a heavy pouch of gold. The moment he saw me, he walked forward. "Selene."His voice was rough."I found the best seamstress in the Northern Territory.""I had a new dress made for your mother."I glanced at the parcel and laughed softly. "Lucian, do you still think a dress can repair what you did?"He swallowed. "No. I know it can't.""I only wanted to make amends."I pushed the parcel back toward him."You can't erase the stitches in my father's palm.""You can't erase the way my mother lowered her head and apologized for looking out

I took my parents straight to the Pack Healing Hall. The moment we stepped outside the Moon Hall, hurried footsteps followed behind us."Selene!"Lucian called my name.I didn't stop.He caught up just before I opened the carriage door. His ceremonial cloak hung crooked over one shoulder. The silver crest of House Blackthorn had fallen from his chest. His suit was wrinkled, as though he'd forgotten he was supposed to be the Alpha of the most powerful Pack. For the first time since I'd met him, he looked lost."Selene." His voice was hoarse. "Let me take your parents inside."My father stepped behind me, and my mother was clutching her torn ceremonial dress. As if they were still afraid of causing Lucian trouble. The sight pierced straight through my heart."No." My voice was calm. "Thank you, Alpha Blackthorn. But we're not that close."His face turned pale. He reached for my hand.I stepped back before he could touch me. "Don't.""And don't frighten my parents again."The words hit him

The silver light inside the Judgment Crystal shifted. The first memory came into focus. It showed the preparation room before the Marking Ceremony. She uncorked a tiny black vial. The moment the liquid touched the wine, it hissed.Firethorn extract.A young servant beside her hesitated. "Miss Ashcroft... isn't that too much?"Evelyn laughed. "Too much?"She swirled one of the goblets carelessly."Selene's parents are low-born Omegas. They probably haven't attended a proper Pack ceremony in their lives."Her smile sharpened. "It'll be fun to watch them panic.""And people like them never fight back. Even if they're humiliated, they'll just smile and say it's fine."The Moon Hall went silent when they heard this. The last trace of color slowly disappeared from Evelyn’s face. The memory continued.Evelyn picked up the two goblets and walked toward Lucian. He stood near the ceremonial platform, reviewing the final arrangements with one of the Pack Elders.Evelyn leaned close to him. The guards still held me firmly in place. Their grips tightened instinctively, as if unsure whether they should let go.The lead Council Guardian walked straight past Alpha Lucian. Then he stopped in front of me. Without hesitation, he bowed."Vice Chair Vale. The Werewolf Council apologizes for arriving too late."Behind him, every Council Guardian lowered their heads in the exact same salute. The guards released me with fear and stumbled backward. Evelyn stared at the Guardians as if she had lost the ability to think. Then she laughed desperately. "No. This has to be some kind of mistake."She pointed at me with a trembling finger. "She's an outsider Omega! A low-born Omega!""How could someone like her become Vice Chair of the Werewolf Council?""Someone is pretending to be the Council!"Lucian stepped forward. "If the Council truly has business with Selene," he said camly, "it can wait until after the Marking Ceremony."His eyes met mine. "This little game has gone far enough."I

The Master of Ceremonies hurried over with the ceremony schedule."Alpha Lucian," he said quietly. "It's time for the Moon Blessing."Lucian glanced down at the parchment."The Luna's Family Blessing."Before he could continue, my father stepped forward."I've prepared the blessing."He carefully pulled a folded piece of parchment from inside his coat."I've been practicing..."Before he could finish, Evelyn let out a small laugh."You?" She looked genuinely surprised. "Mr. Vale...""You intend to deliver the Family Blessing?"A few nearby guests exchanged amused looks. An Elder snorted. "Since when does an Omega bless an Alpha?"Another laughed. "Outsider Omegas really don't know Pack traditions.""The blessing is meant to honor the Alpha's bloodline.""What right does he have to stand before Alpha Lucian?"My father's hand tightened around the parchment."I... I'm Selene's father.""I only wanted to bless my daughter's future."No one seemed to hear him.Evelyn turned to Lucian with

When I walked back into the Moon Hall, Lucian was standing outside the dressing chamber.Evelyn sat on a velvet chair, her eyes red with tears.Lucian bent slightly, patiently wiping the corners of her eyes with a clean handkerchief."Please don't cry."His voice was softer than I had heard all day."This wasn't your fault. You were only trying to help."A healer's kit rested on the table beside them.Fresh herbs, bandages, and Moonroot salve lay untouched. My father's hand was still bleeding in the supply room. Yet the first healer summoned that afternoon had come for Evelyn. It wasn't the first time.Last year during the Midwinter Hunt, I had fallen from a cliff after shielding a young cub from a rogue wolf.My ribs had cracked.I waited outside the healer's den for Lucian until sunrise. He never came.Later, I learned Evelyn had twisted her ankle during training.Lucian had stayed beside her all night. When I asked him about it, he simply said,"Evelyn has no family in this Pack.""
