Chapter seven

Devlin POV

“I see you have joined yourself with gossipers and it was quite enjoyable to you, right?” I said with a hint of sarcasm in my words, but anger was seeping into my face, and she could see it.

“Ooh, Alpha, I am deeply sorry. It must be a misunderstanding.” She bowed quickly.

“A misunderstanding? Can this be a misunderstanding? I caught you in the middle of a group gossiping, and you call it a misunderstanding?” I was shocked by how hilarious she sounded.

“No. I was curious when I saw a gathering here so I wanted to see what was going on for myself.” She replied quickly while I scanned her closely to tell if she was lying to save her skin, or maybe she was telling the truth.

I wouldn't have believed it, but on second thought, I remembered I was also curious to know what was going on at first until I heard what the maid said.

Sighing, I shook my shoulders as I slowly let go of the anger before looking back at her.

“That's fine. I have brought my mate to the pack and I want you to offer her some food.” I said.

“A mate? So it's true?” She replied and unlike the others, she had a smile on her face.

“What?” I asked as I found it uncomfortable.

“Nothing. I am just so happy that you finally got your mate after so many years of staying without one.” She explained, but I felt a sense of mockery in it.

“Is that a mockery or what? Have I become so acquainted with you that you can easily use me as a subject of a joke?” I thundered, suddenly turned serious, but she didn't look afraid even a bit.

That was what I found amusing about her. She was old and fearless. If it were the other maid, they would have shuddered and even fallen to their knees, but she was different, that was why I took a liking to her. Also, she was old enough to be my adviser, so I usually turned a blind eye to her teasing.

“If you keep being like this, no woman will like you!” she shrugged and started walking away even before I asked her to. Her actions didn't surprise me, but the words she just said.

“What? Sarah? What did you just say?”  I snapped, turning towards her. “But I have loved before, and we both know,” I added, intending to prove a point.

“Ooh, about that, I used to think she was pretending to love you!”

“What? Are you saying I'm not good enough to be loved?”

She paused and turned towards me, and the smile on her face was quickly replaced.

“The thing is that you don't know how to make a woman fall in love with you. I bet you are having a tough time with this new mate you have gotten.” The smile on her face returned as she seemed to have sniffed out the problem I was facing.

I gasped thinking I must have slipped the words away, or maybe she read my thoughts, but that wasn't possible. She was an omega and there was no way she could do such, especially to an Alpha like me. What the heck is this?

Leaning forward I wanted to yell at her, but I reserved my words as I suddenly felt she was poking in the right direction. If not, why would Elora behave in such a way to me even when I looked very capable of taking care of her?

“What do you mean? Is there something I don't know? Or maybe you are a psychologist who knows what people like and want?” I narrowed my gaze on her.

“Yes. You have been harsh. I can tell. If you can soften yourself, then I think that girl will fall in love with you. If I may, you had to drag her here before she came, right?” She replied, leaving my jaws falling to the floor.

She seemed as though she was there when the whole event played out. I couldn't even respond. My head tucked in, and I was no longer mad at her but trying to see where I was at fault.

“So, what do you want me to do? I knew you wanted something.” She asked again, and I was pulled out of my thoughts.

“Ooh, yeah! I want you to bring her some food. She needs it.” I replied.

“Okay. I will go get her some food while you go back there and keep her company!” She replied, pointing back at where I walked from. “Go!” She tugged her head forward while I sighed.

Then she walked away, and I watched her for a while before walking back to where Elora was. When I was by the door, I wanted to knock, but part of me didn't.

She had faced much too just for today, and maybe I could spare her some time to rest, but what Sarah said played in my head again, and I gritted my teeth tightly.

Unable to hold down the anger, I pushed the door and walked in. My eyes immediately scouted the place and I noticed she wasn't sitting on the bed, rather she was leaning by the window and having a view outside.

Even as I entered, she didn't look bothered, and it felt like something had captivated her interest outside.

“What are you looking at?” I said, advancing further and trying to pinpoint what took her attention.

“Ooh.” She gasped and turned towards me.

Looking through the window I saw some warrior training, so I figured she must be awestruck by their moves or maybe something else. What was glinting off her eyes wasn't admiration, but sadness.

“Why me?”

She suddenly asked, taking me by surprise and I had to sit down to be able to comprehend what she meant.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“You know what I mean. Why do you want me when I have no wolf? Or do you intend to use me? I've heard tales about you. How you've used many women. Do I look usable to you?” She bombarded me with questions without looking tired of running her mouth. Then she gulped down and then wanted to continue but I was fed up already.

I lost my cool and yelled.

“Shut up!” I snarled, and my voice resounded around the place.
