“It’s already inside.”

The words froze Aira’s blood.

Not the voice from the floor. Not the one from the ceiling. The words themselves—quiet, certain, horrible. The thing wearing her face smiled as if it had just finished delivering the final piece of a puzzle.

Kael went deadly still beside her.

Then the crimson force around him exploded outward in a violent ring, shattering the nearest wall panel and sending dust cascading through the corridor. “Liar.”

Aira could barely breathe. The baby inside

Aira could not move. The Kael standing beyond the opened door in the memory was not her Kael, not really. His face was the same, his shoulders were the same, even the slight tilt of his head looked heartbreakingly familiar, but his eyes were black as the root gate, and the sight of them made something inside Aira turn ice cold. Her real Kael was still somewhere outside the memory, still holding her in the corridor, still fighting the house with his crimson power, but the figure in the doorway looked at her as if he had been waiting for her alone. Her mother pressed a bloodied hand against the inside of the door and shook her head in frantic warning. “Do not answer him,” she whispered. “It is wearing what you love.” The child inside Aira’s womb went rigid and then spoke with a trembling certainty that made her stomach clench. Mother, that is the first body. The words hit harder than pain. Aira stared at the dark eyed Kael and tried to understand what the child meant, but the memory aro

Come home. The voice sounded exactly like Kael, and that was what made Aira’s blood turn to ice.She stood inside the black hallway of memory, the ring in her small hand trembling so hard it almost slipped from her fingers. The stone beneath her bare feet was cold and wet, stained with old blood that seemed to shimmer under a light that had no source. At the far end of the corridor, the door she had been warned never to open stood half ajar, and the space beyond it breathed like something alive. Her heart hammered in her chest so hard it almost hurt. For one wild heartbeat she wanted to run to the voice because it sounded like the one person who had never let her fall. Then the child inside her moved, and the feeling turned sharp and wrong.Do not go to him, the child whispered inside her womb.Aira stopped breathing. The voice in the dark came again, soft and low, every word wrapped in the same rough warmth Kael used when he was trying to steady her. Come home, Aira. Her throat tight

Then open. The words rolled through the hidden corridor like a command and a curse, and Aira felt them strike the seal in her chest with a force so sharp it made her knees buckle. Kael caught her instantly, his arms locking around her as crimson power burst outward in a fierce ring that lit the corridor in blood red light. The woman wearing her mother’s face in the hidden passage did not move. The child in the seam below did not move. Even the thing wearing Aira’s face in the floor held still, as if the whole house had inhaled at once and was waiting to see who would break first. Aira’s breath came in shallow, shaking pulls. The baby inside her had gone frighteningly quiet again, but this silence was not peace. It was listening. It was gathering itself. The black thread around her wrist tightened until it felt like a living vein pulled taut between the floor, the wall, and her own blood.Aira could feel Kael trembling with the effort of holding himself together. His voice, when it cam

“Run,” it said. “It knows you are the key.”Aira felt the words hit her like ice water. The voice had come from the woman in the hidden corridor, but the face was her mother’s and the shape of the grief in it was so sharp that Aira almost reached for her without thinking. Kael caught her at once, one arm locking around her waist while his other hand rose in a burst of crimson power, ready to strike whatever dared come through the wall next. The corridor around them had gone still in that terrible way that meant something was already moving beneath the silence. Aira’s seal burned in her chest. The child inside her had gone frighteningly quiet again, and that silence was no comfort. It felt like breath being held.“I am not running,” Aira whispered, though her voice shook. She could hear her own fear and hated it. Hated that the house knew it. Hated that the root voice knew it. Hated that every secret in her blood seemed ready to spill out at once. Her mother in the seam below lifted tr

Already inside the house. The words from the child in Aira’s womb seemed to freeze the corridor in place. The black seam under their feet was still open, the hidden passage in the wall still breathing cold air, and the woman wearing her mother’s face was trembling now as if the truth had struck her harder than anyone else in the room. Aira could barely stand. Kael held her with both arms, his body rigid with fury, his crimson power pulsing around them in fierce protective waves, but even that was not enough to steady the terror rising through her. If the root gate was already inside the house, then nowhere was safe. Not the corridor. Not the chamber below. Not even the walls around them. Her blood felt too hot, then too cold, then hot again as the seal in her chest throbbed like a second heart trying to tear free. “What do you mean, inside the house?” she whispered, and her own voice sounded thin and broken in the dark. The thing in the floor wearing her face smiled with terrible calm

I know where the root gate is.The words came from inside Aira’s womb in that same impossible voice, and the corridor seemed to stop breathing all at once. Aira staggered as a violent pulse tore through her chest, through the bond, through the strange living seam that had opened inside her blood. Kael caught her before she could fall, both arms locking around her with desperate force, and she felt the heat of his power gathering around them like a shield that could not quite keep the dark out. Her mother in the seam below made a sound of pure grief, and the woman at the end of the hidden corridor wearing her face went still, as if the words had struck something ancient inside her too. Even Corvin had lost the last of his control. He stood frozen, pale and rigid, staring at Aira as if the child in her womb had just spoken a language he feared to hear.Aira could barely force air into her lungs. “What did you say?” she whispered, though she was not sure whether she was speaking to the c

The council chamber was no longer a room.It was a battlefield that had not yet learned to bleed.Aira stood at its center with Kael half a step behind her not shielding her, not leading her, but standing where everyone could see that he would not move her aside.
