Emmy

“Get back here! Keep running, and you will not see the light of day for a long time, Princess,” he screamed, his loud, obnoxious voice straining against the wind as I ran farther into the woods. A canopy of shadows danced a blurry tango around me as I pushed my aching legs faster over the dead foliage of autumn, my heavy breaths creating a crisp steam as the cold night air burned my lungs.

A deep, guttural howl in the distance, one full of raw power, had my heart racing faster as the very ground began to shake. Several howls answered it in return, and the wind itself seemed to still. The hunt was on.

I began to weave through the trees, hoping the darkness would help conceal my fear. As I look behind me, my heart nearly leapt out of my chest at the sight of several large wolves running towards me at full speed. Their snarls bounced off the dead leaves that made my skin crawl.

BAM!

The wind was knocked out of me while my world spun, air leaving my lungs, and my body flying in the air before the full force of my weight bounced on the ground. My head hitting the soft patches of dirt with a sickening crunch. My vision was blurry as my body registered pain everywhere. The trees looked whimsical as the soft silver moonlight filtered through, specks of gold like pixie dust danced in the space. For a moment, there was peace in the air. Then it shattered when a larger than life wolf’s head appeared above me. All I could focus on was the one glowing red eye that looked like lava swirling in the depth of hell and the other a glacier blue with golden specks that looked like the northern lights of old. The heat from his towering form radiated off of him like steam pipes, and the growl from his barred teeth was something that chilled the bone to the core.

He raised his massive paw that must have been as large as an elephants foot in what felt like slow motion as he held my gaze. My sternum began to scream as his paw crashed onto my heaving chest, the air pushing out of my already swollen lungs. I begin to shake and close my eyes tight as his wet snout lightly traces my cheek. I dared to open my eyes once more when the hot, smelly meat breath pulled back.

The beast on top of me winked before a searing white hot pain burst through my shoulder, his claw digging into my meaty flesh. I screamed to the heavens and those specks of pixie gold returned into a red haze.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

“AHH!” I scream, sitting up quickly, my covers falling to my lap. My chest is rising rapidly and my heartbeat is in my ears as I attempt to suck in a full breath of air. The annoying chirping oddly enough helps me focus just enough to reach over and silence the damn thing. I look at the bedside and see the picture of my mom and me, and sigh, quickly wiping away the lone tear that stained my cheek. “I’m safe.” I mutter to myself a few times, while absentmindedly rubbing the jagged scar that runs from my collarbone to my breast.

I swing my legs over the side of the little bed and grab my phone to check the time. “UGH!” I groan and hang my head low. The exasperated sigh that leaves my lips could be comical. Of course it had to be today of all days.

This particular day is one I have been dreading for well over two months. Okay, maybe I’m lying a little. I’ve been dreading this day my whole life, particularly the last five years. See, today is “Results Day” for Territory I. As in the classification results, I am part of this quarter’s reading.

I have spent the last twenty-one years being invisible. I even pushed my testing until three days before my twenty-first because I did not want to be labeled. I’m really good at being invisible too. I keep my head down; I don’t make eye contact with anyone, I don’t talk to anyone, I don’t go anywhere other than school, work, and the store. My work doubles as my home. I will order online as much as I can, just to avoid people. People scare me in general. I am not a people person. I wasn’t always like this. I was once a very bubbly, outgoing girl. But it all changed when that day happened.

Ever since I hit puberty, I have had this internal urge to drop to my knees and bow my head every time a Dominant is near. Dominants scare me more than normal Superiors. Being a human is hard enough without extra-fueled testosterone lurking in every corner. Luckily, I work at a little flower and herb shop and get to work in the back most of the time. My boss, Mrs. White, is the sweetest old lady. Her husband passed away several years ago, so it’s just her, and now me! I have been working with her since I was thirteen. She took me in when no one else wanted me after my mom died five years ago, and she knows that the big city is not for me.

It has always been my dream to open up my own little book and music shop. As much as I love Mrs. White, I want to move to the countryside, find a quiet little house, maybe get a dog, and live out my days in peace. No big city, no egotistical Superiors, and definitely NO DOMINANTS.
