The chamber answered her step with a sound like a living thing waking.

Aira had barely crossed the broken line at the edge of the seal when the markings in the floor flared violently beneath her feet. Light and darkness clashed around her ankles, the stone trembling as though it no longer knew whether to open or resist. The air turned thick. Heavy. Pressing in from every side.

Kael’s voice cut through the roar. “Aira!”

She turned just enough to see him at the chamber’s edge, crimson energy blaz

The baby smiled.Aira felt it before she fully understood it, a strange, impossible sensation inside her womb—a tiny shift, a warm curl of presence that should have been innocence and was somehow not. Her breath caught so sharply it hurt.Kael felt the change in her body at once. His head snapped down. “Aira?”She could not answer.Because the smile had changed everything. The black seam beneath their feet widened in a violent jerk, and the air in the corridor turned icy. The thing below was awake now—not stirring, not reaching, but opening. The sound that rose from the floor was ancient enough to rattle through bone and blood alike.“Choose quickly, mother.”Aira’s knees almost gave out.Kael caught her instantly, crimson power surging around his arms as if he could hold the world together by force alone. “No one is choosing anything.”The thing in the floor laughed. The child in the ceiling—Mira’s face, wrong and calm and staring down through the crack—tilted its head. “You already

“Take the mother.”The words came from everywhere at once. From the child in the floor. From the child in the ceiling. From the black thread binding Aira’s wrist to both of them. Her whole body locked.Kael’s roar tore through the corridor a second later, pure fury and fear. Crimson power exploded around him so violently the wall beside the seam cracked and dust rained down in a choking cloud.“Over my dead body!”But the house did not listen. The black thread snapped tighter.Aira cried out as it burned into her skin, pulling in two directions at once. One force dragged her downward toward the thing in the floor wearing her face. The other jerked her upward toward the crack in the ceiling where Mira’s terrified silhouette flickered behind smoke and black light. Her own wrist felt like it was being torn from her arm.“Kael—” Her voice broke. He caught her before her knees hit the floor, one arm around her waist, the other braced against the pull trying to tear her away from him. His f

  • Rejected and Pregnant: The Alpha King’s Forbidden Heir    Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Eight: The Hand That Wasn’t Mira’s

The hand coming through the ceiling crack was small.Too small.Aira’s breath stopped in her chest as it wrapped around her wrist with a grip that felt impossibly strong for something so tiny. For one wild heartbeat, she thought it was Mira reaching down for help. She even saw Mira’s face above the opening—pale, terrified, one hand stretched toward her. Then the hand in Aira’s wrist tightened. And Mira screamed. Not from above. From inside the ceiling.Aira’s eyes widened in horror as the true Mira, still half-visible through the crack, staggered backward with a choked cry, clutching at the black light burning in her palm. The thing wearing her body was not the same thing reaching for Aira. There were two.Kael saw it a split second later. His crimson power exploded outward with a roar so violent the corridor lights burst red again. “Aira!”He grabbed for her, but the hand from above jerked hard, yanking her upward. Pain shot through her arm. The bond inside her screamed in response,

The black ring in Aira’s palm split with a burst of white-hot light. She cried out and nearly dropped it, but the thing did not fall. It hovered above her skin, trembling violently, the dark metal cracking open along its center like an egg shell under pressure. A pulse slammed through the corridor, hard enough to throw dust from the ceiling and make the house groan above them.Kael grabbed her wrist immediately. “Aira!”“I’m here—” The words broke in her throat as pain flared up her arm.The ring widened again. And from inside it came a sound that made every living thing in the corridor freeze.A child laughing. Not the first child in the floor. Not the baby in her womb.A third voice.Thin. Wet. Wrong.Rowan went pale. “Absolutely not. There should not be a laugh in that ring.”Marcus stepped forward, blade raised, eyes locked on the light burning out of the ring’s center. “What is inside it?”Corvin had gone rigid. “Put it down.”Aira turned on him, fury and pain colliding so hard s

“Choose which child lives.”The words hit Aira like a physical blow. For a second, the corridor vanished around her. There was only the creature climbing from the seam, her own face stretched into something cruel and certain, and the unbearable pressure in her chest where the bond to her unborn child throbbed like a second heartbeat.Kael went absolutely still beside her. Then the crimson power around him surged with a roar so violent the walls flashed red. “No.”The thing in the floor smiled at him with Aira’s mouth. “Yes.”Aira could barely breathe. The child in her womb had gone so still she felt almost sick with it. Not asleep. Listening. The seal inside her burned hot enough to make tears spring to her eyes.“Mama,” the thing repeated softly, and now the voice sounded almost tender. “You know what must be done.”Rowan made a strangled sound behind Marcus. “I hate everything about that sentence.”Marcus did not move. His blade stayed raised, but his gaze had locked on the seam lik

It was her face.Aira’s breath vanished so completely it felt like her lungs had forgotten how to work. The thing climbing out of the seam had her eyes, her mouth, the shape of her cheekbones, even the faint scar near her jaw she had gotten as a child. Not a stranger wearing her likeness. Not a trick of smoke or shadow. Her. Or something made from her. Something that had waited under the house long enough to learn her shape.Kael went rigid beside her. Then the crimson power around him exploded. The corridor flashed red so hard the walls seemed to shake under the force of it. “Get away from her!”The thing in the floor smiled.Aira felt the seal in her chest lurch violently, as though something inside her blood had just recognized its reflection and hated what it found.Rowan stumbled backward and swore. “Nope. Absolutely not. That is not okay. That is never okay.”Marcus was already moving, blade lifted, body angled between the seam and the others. Theron crouched low, ready to strik
