Cold dragged Aira back to consciousness.

It crept into her bones, stiffened her fingers, and burned against the raw skin of her palms. For a moment, she forgot where she was. Then the ache in her ankle pulsed sharply, and memory crashed over her all at once the platform, the rejection, the elder’s voice, the guards’ hands reaching for her.

She sucked in a shaky breath and forced herself to sit up.

The forest was quiet.

Too quiet.

Morning light filtered through the canopy in thin silver lines. Dew clung to the leaves, soaking the hem of her torn dress. Aira scanned her surroundings slowly, her heart pounding. No howls. No voices. No movement except the sway of branches in the breeze.

They hadn’t followed her at dawn.

Yet.

She tried to stand and nearly cried out as pain shot through her ankle. Gritting her teeth, she leaned against the fallen log and tested her weight carefully. It held but barely.

“I can do this,” she whispered, though doubt trembled beneath the words.

She had to.

Aira tore a strip from the bottom of her dress and wrapped it tightly around her ankle, tying it off with shaking fingers. It wasn’t much, but it would keep the swelling down enough to walk.

Each step sent pain flaring up her leg as she limped forward, deeper into unfamiliar territory. She didn’t dare follow any path. Paths were watched.

Her stomach twisted not from hunger, but from fear.

The child.

She pressed her palm gently against her abdomen, as if reassurance could be passed through skin and bone. She had sensed the pregnancy days ago but had told no one. In the Lower Pack, pregnancies were reported immediately, logged, monitored.

Controlled.

She had waited, hoping foolishly that Rovan would protect her.

A bitter laugh escaped her throat.

She should have known better.

By midday, exhaustion weighed heavily on her. Her ankle throbbed violently, and her vision swam as she pushed through underbrush. When she finally stumbled into a small clearing, she collapsed to her knees.

The smell of smoke made her freeze.

Human smoke.

Aira crawled forward, peering through the trees. A small hut sat at the edge of the clearing, crooked but intact. Smoke drifted lazily from a stone chimney. Someone lived here.

Help could mean safety.

Help could also mean betrayal.

She hesitated, every instinct screaming at her to turn back. But the thought of guards closing in, of steel and orders whispered in the dark, pushed her forward.

She limped toward the hut.

Before she could knock, the door creaked open.

An old woman stood there, bent with age, her sharp eyes assessing Aira in a single glance from her torn dress to her injured ankle to the fear she hadn’t been able to hide.

“You’re running,” the woman said simply.

Aira swallowed. “Please. I won’t stay long.”

The woman studied her for a moment longer, then stepped aside. “You won’t survive another day like this.”

Relief nearly buckled Aira’s knees.

Inside, the hut was warm and smelled of herbs. The woman guided her to a rough wooden chair and knelt without being asked, gently unwrapping the cloth around her ankle.

“Wolves?” the woman asked.

Aira nodded.

“Rejected?”

Another nod.

The woman’s mouth tightened. “Cruel law.”

As the woman worked, binding her ankle properly with salve that burned and soothed all at once, Aira’s body finally betrayed her. Tears slipped down her cheeks, silent and unstoppable.

“I won’t give him up,” she whispered hoarsely.

The woman paused. “Give who up?”

Aira’s hand moved instinctively to her stomach. “My child.”

The old woman followed the gesture, her eyes softening. “Then you’ll need more than luck.”

She stood and handed Aira a bowl of broth. “Eat. Then you’ll listen.”

Aira took the bowl with trembling hands.

“Listen to what?” she asked.

The woman’s gaze flicked toward the forest, dark and watchful beyond the small window.

“How to disappear,” she replied.

Get back inside!”But Aira didn’t move. She stood at the top of the stone steps, her hand resting over her stomach. The baby inside her stirred again.Strong.Restless.Alive.Rowan glanced over his shoulder and groaned.“Oh come on.”Marcus cursed under his breath.“This just got worse.”The hunter leader took a few calm steps forward, ignoring the chaos still unfolding around him.“So the rumors were true.”His eyes fixed on Aira’s stomach.“The Blood Alpha grows within you.”Aira’s jaw tightened.“You won’t touch my child.”The man chuckl

Another confident villain.”Marcus drew his sword.“Enough talking.”The first hunter moved suddenly.Fast.Far faster than a normal human should move. His blade flashed toward one of the pack warriors. The wolf barely had time to raise his weapon before the hunter struck.Clang!Steel co

The valley did not sleep that night.Torches burned along the walls, casting long golden shadows across the stone and wooden defenses of the pack territory. Warriors stood at every watchtower, their eyes scanning the endless darkness of the forest. The Crimson Moon Order had made their intentions clear. They were coming for the child. And they were willing to wage war to get it.Kael remained on the northern wall long after the messenger had disappeared into the forest. His gaze stayed fixed on the black line of trees beyond the valley.Rowan leaned against the stone beside him, rolling his shoulders as if warming up for a fight.“Well,” Rowan muttered, “that was dramatic.”Marcus stood on the other side of Kael, arms folded.“They’re testing us.”Rowan snorted.“Testing us?”He gestured toward the forest.“They basically told us they’re going to steal the baby.”Marcus’s eyes stayed serious.“That’s exactly the point.”Rowan frowned.“What point?”Marcus answered quietly.“They want

Night fell slowly over the valley.Torches burned along the pack walls, their flames dancing in the cold wind. Warriors moved along the defenses with heightened alertness, every sense stretched to its limit. No one laughed. No one relaxed. The Crimson Moon Order had crossed into their territory. And that meant the valley was no longer safe.Kael stood on the northern wall, his eyes scanning the dark forest beyond the gates.Beside him, Rowan leaned against the stone barrier, sharpening a long silver blade with slow, deliberate strokes. The scraping sound cut through the silence.“You know,” Rowan muttered, “most enemies get nervous when they realize they’re about to fight an Alpha.”Kael didn’t respond.Rowan glanced toward the trees again.“These people?”He shrugged.“They seem very confident.”Marcus climbed the steps onto the wall behind them.“Because they’re trained for this.”Rowan rolled his eyes.“Everyone says that right before they get their teeth knocked out.”Marcus ignor

The warning howl echoed across the valley like a crack of thunder.Every wolf in the courtyard froze.Kael’s instincts sharpened instantly. The sound had carried urgency fear mixed with pain. Not the howl of a warrior who had found an enemy. The howl of one who had already been attacked.Rowan cursed under his breath.“That’s not good.”Marcus turned sharply toward the northern gate.“That patrol had six wolves.”Kael’s jaw tightened.“And now only one is still howling.”Aira felt the baby twist sharply inside her.The movement was stronger than before, almost restless. Her fingers gripped the edge of the table beside her.“They’re getting closer.”Mira placed a steadying hand on her arm.“Sit down.”But Aira shook her head.“No.”Her breathing steadied as she focused on the strange sensation inside her.“It feels like… they’re searching.”Theron stepped beside her.“That’s exactly what they’re doing.”Kael turned toward him.“You said they could sense the Blood Alpha’s power.”Theron

The wind over the valley shifted.A cold current rolled down from the northern forest, carrying with it a scent that immediately made several wolves stiffen.Kael felt it first. His head lifted slightly as his instincts sharpened.Danger.Not the open, aggressive danger of an invading pack.Something quieter.Something that moved like a knife in the dark.Rowan noticed Kael’s expression change.“You smell it too?”Kael nodded slowly.“Yes.”Marcus stepped closer.“What is it?”Kael’s voice lowered.“Strangers.”Theron stood very still in the center of the courtyard. His sharp eyes were fixed on the distant forest beyond the valley walls. For several seconds he said nothing. Then he exhaled slowly.“They’re already here.”Rowan frowned.“Already here?”Theron nodded once.“Scouts.”Marcus’ jaw tightened.“For the Crimson Moon Order?”Theron didn’t hesitate.“Yes.”Aira felt the baby move again. Not gently this time. The child shifted sharply, almost like it sensed a threat approaching.
