~Selene's POV~

The twins go down at seven-thirty.

This is later than usual, because the east wing is new and Lior requires an extended period of vocal protest about any new environment before he accepts it, and tonight that period runs approximately forty minutes longer than it does at the south property. She holds him through most of it, walking the length of the room with him against her shoulder, until the novelty of the ceiling above the cot finally outlasts his objections and he goes quiet

  • Rejected and Pregnant with Alpha Twins   Chapter One Hundred and Eight

~Selene's POV~The conversation starts the way most of their evenings start now.Miriam goes to bed at half past nine, which is her habit and has been since Silvermere, where late nights did not suit the rhythm of two infants and the particular exhaustion of a woman in her fifties who has been someone's anchor through a year that required more anchoring than most years do. She says goodnight to both of them from the doorway of the main sitting room, where Selene and Caden are at either end of the long sofa with the fire going and two glasses on the low table, and her goodnight carries no commentary, which is itself the commentary. The door closes behind her.The fire is well built at this point. The evening has been going since seven, when Selene came downstairs after the twins' bedtime to find him already in the sitting room with the fire lit and nothing in particular planned, which is the version of an evening she has come to find most reliable. No agenda. No subject arranged in adv

  • Rejected and Pregnant with Alpha Twins   Chapter One Hundred and Seven

~Selene's POV~The first negotiation is the corridor. There are two ways to reach the east wing from the main staircase. The shorter route runs past his study and the library and requires passing the door to his office in the mornings when he is on early calls, which means foot traffic in both directions at the same time, which means a corridor that is not quite wide enough for two people and whatever Lior has decided to carry from one end of it to the other. The longer route adds forty seconds and goes around the back of the main staircase past the linen closet and the small bathroom, but it keeps the east wing foot traffic separate from the ground floor work traffic, and after two mornings of the shorter route she tells Mrs. Gale they will use the longer one going forward.Mrs. Gale notes it without comment and adjusts the runner rug at the back staircase corner so the edge does not catch the wheel of the twins' chair. This is how the first week goes. Not in large decisions but in t

  • Rejected and Pregnant with Alpha Twins   Chapter One Hundred and Six

~Selene's POV~She waits until nine. Not because nine is a significant hour or because she has assigned it any particular weight. She waits because the twins need to be fully down and the house needs to have settled into its evening quiet and she needs to have sat with the direction she found last night long enough to be certain it is a direction and not simply a mood produced by a particular chair and a clear sky and the specific quality of silence in a manor she is still learning to be inside again. She has made decisions from moods before. She knows the difference now between a mood and a direction, and this is a direction, and she waits until nine to be sure. She checks the east wing at eight forty-five.Both twins are down. Asha is deep under, her breathing the slow even rhythm that means genuinely out rather than the lighter sleep she sometimes does in the first hour where any sound from the hallway brings her back up. Lior is on his stomach with his face turned toward the windo

  • Rejected and Pregnant with Alpha Twins   Chapter One Hundred and Five

~Selene's POV~She spends the morning in the east wing going through the twins' things. This is necessary work, not invented work. Lior has developed strong opinions about certain items of clothing over the past two months and acts on these opinions with conviction during the dressing process, and she has been meaning to reorganize his drawer so that the items least likely to cause negotiation are the ones she can reach without hunting for them at six in the morning. She does it now while he is occupied with Miriam in the garden below, the window open so she can hear him, his voice carrying up from the terrace in the particular register he uses when he is both content and narrating the experience at volume.Asha is in her corner with a board book she has read seven times and appears to find improved with each reading.Selene works through the drawer and then reorganizes the shelf and then sits in the low chair by the east window and goes through her emails from Orla about the spring c

  • Rejected and Pregnant with Alpha Twins   Chapter One Hundred and Four

~Selene's POV~The kitchen at Blackwell Manor runs east to west along the back of the ground floor, which means by nine in the morning the south-facing windows on the adjacent breakfast room have already done most of their work and the light coming through into the kitchen itself is the secondhand kind, reflected off the garden wall rather than direct. She had forgotten this. At the south property the kitchen window faced the garden straight on, and the mornings there were brighter earlier. Here the kitchen takes its time. She has been awake since Lior announced the morning at six forty-three.She has been through the east wing routine, the twins fed and changed and transferred to the main sitting room where Miriam is reading with them in the particular patient way Miriam does most things, her book open on her knee and Asha working her way methodically through a set of soft blocks on the rug nearby and Lior conducting experiments from his bouncer with the focused determination of some

She holds him through most of it, walking the length of the room with him against her shoulder, until the novelty of the ceiling above the cot finally outlasts his objections and he goes quiet by degrees, his breathing evening out in the particular way that means he is actually going rather than merely resting his case.Asha was already down. She assessed her corner, found it consistent with the corner Selene built for her, and settled without comment.By eight the east wing is quiet.Selene changes the soft light by the shelf, checks both cots once, and pulls the door to. The hallway outside is empty. She can hear Mrs. Gale somewhere below, the distant sound of the kitchen being put

~Selene’s POV~The rejection is scheduled for nine o'clock.I know because Caden's message at six in the morning is clinical and precise, as if he is confirming a conference call.Pack Hall, third floor, nine a.m. Come alone. My mother reads the message over my shoulder and says nothing. • Rejected and Pregnant with Alpha Twins   Chapter Two

~Selene’s POV~I don't sleep.I lie on my side of the bed — our bed — and stare at the ceiling while Caden's side remains cold and untouched.
