Chapter 10: The Blood Oath

The Blackwood pack moved like a well-oiled machine.

Within hours of Vera’s report, the courtyard was filled with the sounds of clashing steel and shifting bones. Warriors were packing supplies, sharpening blades, and saying goodbye to their families. The air was thick with the scent of determination and the heavy, metallic tang of impending bloodshed.

I stood in the center of the war room, staring at the massive map spread across the oak table.

"You should be resting," Kael said, walking up behind me. He was already dressed in black tactical gear, a heavy silver sword strapped to his back.

"And you should be explaining why you think you're leaving me behind," I replied, not turning around.

I felt his hands land on my shoulders, his fingers digging gently into my muscles. "You just survived an ancient trial, Elara. Your body is still recovering. Besides, this is a rogue army. They fight dirty. I need you here, safe."

I spun around, looking up at him. "I am the High Priestess of the Moon Goddess, Kael. If I stay here, I’m just a target. If I fight beside you, I’m a weapon. You taught me how to leash the power. Let me use it."

He stared down at me, his jaw ticking. I could see the war raging in his eyes—the possessive Alpha desperate to protect his mate, battling against the logical leader who knew I was right.

"Besides," I added softly, reaching up to trace the line of his jaw, "if you die out there, I will follow you. You swore that to me in the arena. Don't make me keep that promise."

Kael let out a harsh breath, his hands dropping to my waist. He pulled me flush against his chest, his head dropping to my neck. He inhaled deeply, marking my scent, before pressing a fierce kiss to my pulse point.

"Fine," he growled against my skin. "But you stay in the center of the formation. You do not leave Vera's side. And if I tell you to run, you run."

"Deal."

The next two days were a blur of brutal travel. We marched north, toward the rocky canyon that marked the edge of Blackwood territory. Ten thousand wolves. It was an army large enough to stain the rivers red.

By midnight on the second day, we reached the canyon. The moon was hidden behind thick clouds, casting the jagged rocks in pitch black.

"Where are they?" Vera muttered, her bow drawn. "My scouts said they would be here."

The silence was deafening. There was no smell of a rogue army. No campfires. No howls. Just the whispering wind through the canyon.

A cold, sick feeling settled in my stomach.

"Kael," I whispered, the mate bond suddenly screaming in warning. "It's a trap."

"Formation!" Kael roared, drawing his sword.

But it was too late.

From the high ridges of the canyon, glowing red eyes suddenly flickered to life. Hundreds of them. Then thousands. The rogue army wasn't in the canyon waiting for us. They were surrounding us.

Massive boulders crashed down from the cliffs, crushing the front lines of our warriors. The screams of dying wolves filled the night air.

"Shields!" Kael shouted, grabbing my arm and yanking me behind a massive rock as arrows rained down.

My heart was pounding so hard I could barely breathe. We were pinned down.

Suddenly, a mocking laugh echoed from the ridge above us. I looked up.

Jason stood there, flanked by a terrifying, scarred rogue Alpha who was twice the size of a normal wolf.

"You walked right into it, Blackwood!" Jason screamed, his voice crazed. "You thought I wanted a battle? I just needed you out of your fortress! My strike team is already at your gates!"

The blood drained from my face. The packhouse. The elders. The children. They were completely undefended.

Kael’s eyes went wide with pure, unadulterated horror. He looked at me, and I saw the exact moment his heart shattered.

"Elara," he choked out.

"Go!" I screamed, shoving him back toward the horses. "Kael, go! I'll hold the canyon!"

"I am not leaving you!" he roared.

"You have to!" I grabbed his face, forcing him to look at me. "Save your pack. I'll buy you time."

Kael looked at the ten thousand rogues above us, and then back to me. He let out a roar of pure agony that shook the very stones around us. But then, he shifted into his massive black wolf and bolted into the darkness.

I turned back to the ridge. The rogue army was charging down the slopes.

"Vera!" I yelled. "With me!"

I closed my eyes, reached deep into my chest, and unleashed the white wolf.

The darkness was alive. As we rode out of the Blackwood gates, the shadows didn't just block the light; they clawed at us. They had form now—long, skeletal fingers of black smoke that reached out from the treeline to snatch at our horses' legs.I rode at the center of the formation, my golden light radiating outward in a protective bubble. Vera and the elite guard flanked us, their swords drawn, cutting down any shadow that breached the barrier.Kael rode beside me, his eyes scanning the darkness. "How much further?""The Frozen Peak is a day's ride north," I shouted over the howling wind. "But we can't ride all the way. The terrain gets too steep."We pushed the horses hard. The unnatural darkness made it impossible to tell time. There was no sun, no moon, only the crimson glow of the Blood Moon occasionally peeking through the thick clouds of shadow.By the time we reached the base of the Frozen Peak, the horses were exhausted, their breath misting in the freezing air.We dismounted

The Silver Creek warriors didn't move. The silver-haired woman—who I vaguely remembered as a distant cousin of Jason’s—sneered at me. "You think your parlor tricks scare us? You're still the same weak omega who ran away with her tail between her legs."Kael growled, stepping forward, but I placed a hand on his chest."Let me," I said softly.I looked at the warriors. I didn't feel anger. I felt pity. They were clinging to a past that had already crumbled to dust.I reached into the golden well of my power, not to attack, but to command. I let a fraction of the Moon Goddess's authority bleed into the room. The temperature dropped. The air grew heavy. The silver-haired woman gasped, her knees buckling. She hit the stone floor, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her, the other warriors collapsed, their weapons clattering to the ground."I am not the weak omega you remember," I said, my voice echoing with divine resonance. "I am the High Priestess. And I am your only chance at survival."I

Dawn broke over Blackwood, revealing the true cost of the battle. The courtyard was a graveyard of ash and shattered stone. We had lost twelve warriors. Dozens more were wounded. The healers worked tirelessly, their hands glowing with soft green light as they tended to the injured.I stood on the balcony, looking out at the destruction. My hand rested on my stomach, a protective instinct I couldn't control. The baby was quiet now, the massive surge of power from last night completely drained.Kael stepped out onto the balcony, a heavy fur draped over his shoulders. He wrapped it around me, pulling me close."The Council is demanding answers," he murmured. "They want to know what the Twin Flame is.""So do I," I admitted. "The First Alpha called it the 'ultimate balance of light and dark.' But I don't know what that means.""We need to find out before he attacks again," Kael said, his voice hard. "He won't retreat forever."A sudden memory sparked in my mind. My mother. She had been th

The shadow army hit the fortress walls like a battering ram.I stood on the main battlements, Kael at my side, as the black tide crashed against the ancient stone. The creatures weren't wolves. They were faceless, shifting masses of smoke and dark magic, their claws leaving jagged, frostbitten scars on the stone."Archers, fire!" Vera roared.A volley of silver-tipped arrows rained down, but the arrows passed straight through the shadows, doing nothing. The creatures didn't even slow down."They're immune to physical weapons!" I shouted."Then use your light!" Kael yelled, drawing his sword and leaping off the battlement into the thick of the fight.I closed my eyes, reaching for the golden well inside my chest. I pushed it outward, a massive wave of divine light cascading down the fortress walls. The shadows hit the light and shrieked—a sound like tearing metal—as they disintegrated into ash.For a moment, we had the upper hand. The Blackwood warriors cheered, pushing back the dark t

The Council chamber was chaos.Alphas from a dozen packs were shouting over one another, their voices echoing off the stone walls. Lord Marcus stood at the head of the table, looking older and more frail than he had since the Ashen Lands."The First Alpha is a myth!" one of the Northern Alphas bellowed, slamming his fist on the table. "Our ancestors used his story to frighten pups into obedience. He cannot be real!""The tomb is empty!" Vera shot back, pointing to the ancient scroll. "Or did the myth steal his own body?"I sat beside Kael, my hand resting on my stomach beneath the table. The golden light inside me was still humming with unease, reacting to the lingering magic of the Blood Moon."Enough," Kael said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade. Every Alpha fell silent. "We don't have time to debate mythology. We need to fortify the borders and prepare for an attack.""Prepare for what?" the Northern Alpha sneered. "An army of shadows?"The doors to t

Three months had passed since the night I became High Priestess. The Blackwood territory was unrecognizable. The once-rugged fortress was now the central hub of the werewolf world. A new Council had been formed, one where Alphas ruled alongside their Lunas, and the old laws of oppression were burned to ash.But peace, I was learning, was a fragile thing.I stood on the balcony of our bedroom, watching the sun set over the mountains. My hand rested on my stomach, a small, secret smile playing on my lips. I hadn't told Kael yet. I wanted to wait until the healer confirmed it, but I knew. The mate bond had felt different for weeks. There was a new, tiny heartbeat pulsing alongside ours."Daydreaming again?"I turned as Kael stepped onto the balcony. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me flush against his chest."Just enjoying the quiet," I said, leaning my head back against his shoulder."Enjoy it while it lasts," he murmured, pressing a kiss to my neck. "Vera said the de
