Chapter 9: The Fall of an Alpha

The sound of a hundred wolves dropping to their knees echoed through the arena like thunder.

Lord Marcus stood at the edge of the high balcony, his silver hair catching the morning light. For a long, tense moment, he just stared at me. Then, with a heavy sigh that seemed to carry the weight of centuries, he bowed his head.

"The Trial of the First Moon has been won," Marcus declared, his voice echoing across the stone. "The bloodline of the High Priestess is restored. I, and the Council, acknowledge Elara as the True Heir."

A rush of triumph flooded my veins, but I didn't let it show on my face. I kept my chin high, my posture rigid.

"But," Marcus continued, his eyes snapping to the far end of the balcony, "the trial has also revealed a grave injustice."

Jason went stiff.

"Alpha Jason of Silver Creek," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerous boom. "You publicly rejected your fated mate. In doing so, you violated the most sacred law of the Moon Goddess, and you attempted to extinguish the True Heir's bloodline. The Council strips you of your title. You are no longer an Alpha."

Jason’s face drained of all color. "You can't do this!" he roared, shoving his chair back. "I am an Alpha by blood! My father—"

"Your father would be ashamed of the coward you have become," Marcus interrupted coldly. "Guards. Remove him."

Two massive wolves stepped out of the shadows, shifting into their human forms. Jason panicked. He grabbed Olivia by the arm, shoved her toward the guards, and bolted for the back exit. In the chaos, he shifted into his wolf form—a large, dark brown beast—and leaped off the back of the balcony, disappearing into the forest below. Olivia screamed as the guards tackled her to the ground.

"Let him run," Kael murmured in my ear. He had moved silently to my side, his hand finding the small of my back. "A cornered rat is still just a rat."

I leaned into his warmth, suddenly exhausted. The adrenaline was fading, and the aftermath of the shift was hitting me like a freight train.

Kael didn't wait for the Council to dismiss us. He swept me up into his arms and carried me out of the arena.

Back in the privacy of our guest quarters, he set me down on the bed. The moment my feet touched the floor, the tension between us snapped.

He didn't say a word. He just cupped my face in his hands and kissed me. It was hard, desperate, and tasted like the fear he had been hiding all morning. I gasped against his mouth, my fingers gripping his shirt, pulling him closer. The mate bond hummed with a golden heat, washing away the cold terror of the trial.

"Don't ever do that to me again," he breathed against my lips.

"I won," I whispered back.

"Doesn't matter." He pressed his forehead to mine. "I thought I lost you."

Before I could answer, a frantic knock pounded against the door.

Kael growled, his body vibrating with frustration. "What?"

The door swung open. Vera stood there, her face pale, holding a piece of parchment.

"Alpha, we just received this from our border scouts," she said, her voice tight. "Jason didn't run away to hide. He ran straight to the Rogues' territory. He's rallied them."

Kael snatched the parchment from her hand. His eyes scanned the words, and the blood drained from his face.

"How many?" he demanded.

Vera swallowed hard. "Our scouts estimate ten thousand. Jason told them about Elara's power. He told them that if they drink the blood of the Moon Goddess's heir, they will become invincible."

I felt the blood drain from my own face. Ten thousand rogues. An army of lawless, savage wolves who wanted to kill me and consume my power.

"Jason is marching them toward the Blackwood border," Vera finished. "They will be here in three days."

Kael crushed the parchment in his fist, his eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated fury.

"Then we don't wait three days," Kael said, his voice cold as ice. "We march to meet them."

The darkness was alive. As we rode out of the Blackwood gates, the shadows didn't just block the light; they clawed at us. They had form now—long, skeletal fingers of black smoke that reached out from the treeline to snatch at our horses' legs.I rode at the center of the formation, my golden light radiating outward in a protective bubble. Vera and the elite guard flanked us, their swords drawn, cutting down any shadow that breached the barrier.Kael rode beside me, his eyes scanning the darkness. "How much further?""The Frozen Peak is a day's ride north," I shouted over the howling wind. "But we can't ride all the way. The terrain gets too steep."We pushed the horses hard. The unnatural darkness made it impossible to tell time. There was no sun, no moon, only the crimson glow of the Blood Moon occasionally peeking through the thick clouds of shadow.By the time we reached the base of the Frozen Peak, the horses were exhausted, their breath misting in the freezing air.We dismounted

The Silver Creek warriors didn't move. The silver-haired woman—who I vaguely remembered as a distant cousin of Jason’s—sneered at me. "You think your parlor tricks scare us? You're still the same weak omega who ran away with her tail between her legs."Kael growled, stepping forward, but I placed a hand on his chest."Let me," I said softly.I looked at the warriors. I didn't feel anger. I felt pity. They were clinging to a past that had already crumbled to dust.I reached into the golden well of my power, not to attack, but to command. I let a fraction of the Moon Goddess's authority bleed into the room. The temperature dropped. The air grew heavy. The silver-haired woman gasped, her knees buckling. She hit the stone floor, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her, the other warriors collapsed, their weapons clattering to the ground."I am not the weak omega you remember," I said, my voice echoing with divine resonance. "I am the High Priestess. And I am your only chance at survival."I

Dawn broke over Blackwood, revealing the true cost of the battle. The courtyard was a graveyard of ash and shattered stone. We had lost twelve warriors. Dozens more were wounded. The healers worked tirelessly, their hands glowing with soft green light as they tended to the injured.I stood on the balcony, looking out at the destruction. My hand rested on my stomach, a protective instinct I couldn't control. The baby was quiet now, the massive surge of power from last night completely drained.Kael stepped out onto the balcony, a heavy fur draped over his shoulders. He wrapped it around me, pulling me close."The Council is demanding answers," he murmured. "They want to know what the Twin Flame is.""So do I," I admitted. "The First Alpha called it the 'ultimate balance of light and dark.' But I don't know what that means.""We need to find out before he attacks again," Kael said, his voice hard. "He won't retreat forever."A sudden memory sparked in my mind. My mother. She had been th

The shadow army hit the fortress walls like a battering ram.I stood on the main battlements, Kael at my side, as the black tide crashed against the ancient stone. The creatures weren't wolves. They were faceless, shifting masses of smoke and dark magic, their claws leaving jagged, frostbitten scars on the stone."Archers, fire!" Vera roared.A volley of silver-tipped arrows rained down, but the arrows passed straight through the shadows, doing nothing. The creatures didn't even slow down."They're immune to physical weapons!" I shouted."Then use your light!" Kael yelled, drawing his sword and leaping off the battlement into the thick of the fight.I closed my eyes, reaching for the golden well inside my chest. I pushed it outward, a massive wave of divine light cascading down the fortress walls. The shadows hit the light and shrieked—a sound like tearing metal—as they disintegrated into ash.For a moment, we had the upper hand. The Blackwood warriors cheered, pushing back the dark t

The Council chamber was chaos.Alphas from a dozen packs were shouting over one another, their voices echoing off the stone walls. Lord Marcus stood at the head of the table, looking older and more frail than he had since the Ashen Lands."The First Alpha is a myth!" one of the Northern Alphas bellowed, slamming his fist on the table. "Our ancestors used his story to frighten pups into obedience. He cannot be real!""The tomb is empty!" Vera shot back, pointing to the ancient scroll. "Or did the myth steal his own body?"I sat beside Kael, my hand resting on my stomach beneath the table. The golden light inside me was still humming with unease, reacting to the lingering magic of the Blood Moon."Enough," Kael said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade. Every Alpha fell silent. "We don't have time to debate mythology. We need to fortify the borders and prepare for an attack.""Prepare for what?" the Northern Alpha sneered. "An army of shadows?"The doors to t

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Enemy   Chapter 17: The Blood Moon Prophecy

Three months had passed since the night I became High Priestess. The Blackwood territory was unrecognizable. The once-rugged fortress was now the central hub of the werewolf world. A new Council had been formed, one where Alphas ruled alongside their Lunas, and the old laws of oppression were burned to ash.But peace, I was learning, was a fragile thing.I stood on the balcony of our bedroom, watching the sun set over the mountains. My hand rested on my stomach, a small, secret smile playing on my lips. I hadn't told Kael yet. I wanted to wait until the healer confirmed it, but I knew. The mate bond had felt different for weeks. There was a new, tiny heartbeat pulsing alongside ours."Daydreaming again?"I turned as Kael stepped onto the balcony. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me flush against his chest."Just enjoying the quiet," I said, leaning my head back against his shoulder."Enjoy it while it lasts," he murmured, pressing a kiss to my neck. "Vera said the de
