Chapter 12: The Bond Unbound

It felt like drowning in warm sunlight.

The golden light from the blood oath didn't just heal the deep gashes on my side; it rewrote my very existence. I could feel Kael’s heartbeat as clearly as my own. I could feel the phantom ache in his chest—the terror he had felt when he thought I was dying.

I gasped, my eyes flying open.

Kael was staring down at me, his golden eyes wide. His wrist was still pressed against mine, the blood drying between our skin.

"Elara?" he breathed.

"I can feel you," I whispered, the sensation overwhelming. "I can feel... everything."

I felt his relief crash into me like a tidal wave. I felt his fierce, burning love, and beneath it, the dark, possessive instinct to lock me away in a tower where nothing could ever hurt me again.

"You're healed," he said, his voice thick with emotion. His thumb traced the smooth, unbroken skin where the rogue Alpha had torn me open. "The Moon Goddess's blood mixed with mine. The oath saved you."

I sat up slowly, marveling at the lack of pain. The exhaustion was gone. The magic in my veins felt deeper, stronger, anchored by the golden thread tying me to the Alpha in front of me.

I looked at him, really looked at him. And then I saw them.

Memories. His memories.

They flashed through my mind like a movie. Kael as a young Alpha, standing in the shadows of the High Council meeting ten years ago, watching a fifteen-year-old girl hide behind a pillar with a book. The immediate, terrifying snap of the mate bond. The agony of having to leave her behind in a pack that didn't deserve her.

Ten years of waiting. Ten years of watching from afar. Ten years of ruling an entire pack while his heart was hollow, waiting for the day she would cross the river.

"You suffered so much," I choked out, reaching up to cup his face.

Kael closed his eyes, leaning into my touch. "It was worth it. Every second of it was worth it for this."

He leaned in, capturing my lips in a kiss. It was different now. The mate bond was fully unlocked, and the passion was blinding. The kiss deepened, and I felt his desire mix with mine, a burning, desperate need that made my toes curl. The world around us—the blood, the battlefield, the death—it all faded into nothing.

A loud, awkward cough shattered the moment.

We broke apart, breathing heavily, to find Vera standing a few feet away. She was covered in mud and rogue blood, but she was smirking.

"I hate to interrupt the... reunion," Vera said, though her tone was far more respectful than it had been in the bedroom days ago. "But the rogues are scattered, and the packhouse is secure. However, we have a problem."

Kael stood up, pulling me to my feet and keeping a protective arm around my waist. "Jason?"

"He slipped away during the chaos," Vera confirmed, her face hardening. "But it's worse. A messenger from the High Council just arrived at the fortress. Jason didn't just run. He kidnapped Lord Marcus."

My blood ran cold. "Why would he take Marcus?"

"He took him to the Ashen Lands," Vera said.

Kael cursed violently.

"What are the Ashen Lands?" I asked.

"Dead territory," Kael growled, his jaw clenching. "It's where the Moon Goddess's magic died. The ground is cursed. Wolves who go there lose their minds, turning into mindless, feral beasts. Not even the High Council has jurisdiction there."

"He's trying to break the Council," I realized aloud. "If Jason kills Marcus in the Ashen Lands, the Council will fall into chaos. But why take him there?"

"Because he knows we will follow," Kael said, looking down at me. The mate bond pulsed with his grim determination and his absolute refusal to let me out of his sight. "It's a trap. He knows I won't let you go alone, and he knows the Ashen Lands will weaken us."

"Then we need to be stronger," I said, my voice ringing with the authority of the High Priestess. I looked at Vera. "Prepare the elite warriors. We leave at dawn."

Vera bowed her head. "Yes, my Luna."

As she walked away, Kael pulled me back into his arms, his chin resting on top of my head.

"The Ashen Lands will try to tear our minds apart," he murmured against my hair. "But the blood oath is stronger. We have to stay together."

"We will," I promised, pressing my hand to his chest, feeling his heartbeat sync perfectly with mine. "Jason thinks he's taking us to our graves. But we're going to drag him out of that cursed land and make him answer for every life he took."

Kael smiled, a dark, lethal curve of his lips.

"Then let's go hunting."

The darkness was alive. As we rode out of the Blackwood gates, the shadows didn't just block the light; they clawed at us. They had form now—long, skeletal fingers of black smoke that reached out from the treeline to snatch at our horses' legs.I rode at the center of the formation, my golden light radiating outward in a protective bubble. Vera and the elite guard flanked us, their swords drawn, cutting down any shadow that breached the barrier.Kael rode beside me, his eyes scanning the darkness. "How much further?""The Frozen Peak is a day's ride north," I shouted over the howling wind. "But we can't ride all the way. The terrain gets too steep."We pushed the horses hard. The unnatural darkness made it impossible to tell time. There was no sun, no moon, only the crimson glow of the Blood Moon occasionally peeking through the thick clouds of shadow.By the time we reached the base of the Frozen Peak, the horses were exhausted, their breath misting in the freezing air.We dismounted

The Silver Creek warriors didn't move. The silver-haired woman—who I vaguely remembered as a distant cousin of Jason’s—sneered at me. "You think your parlor tricks scare us? You're still the same weak omega who ran away with her tail between her legs."Kael growled, stepping forward, but I placed a hand on his chest."Let me," I said softly.I looked at the warriors. I didn't feel anger. I felt pity. They were clinging to a past that had already crumbled to dust.I reached into the golden well of my power, not to attack, but to command. I let a fraction of the Moon Goddess's authority bleed into the room. The temperature dropped. The air grew heavy. The silver-haired woman gasped, her knees buckling. She hit the stone floor, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her, the other warriors collapsed, their weapons clattering to the ground."I am not the weak omega you remember," I said, my voice echoing with divine resonance. "I am the High Priestess. And I am your only chance at survival."I

Dawn broke over Blackwood, revealing the true cost of the battle. The courtyard was a graveyard of ash and shattered stone. We had lost twelve warriors. Dozens more were wounded. The healers worked tirelessly, their hands glowing with soft green light as they tended to the injured.I stood on the balcony, looking out at the destruction. My hand rested on my stomach, a protective instinct I couldn't control. The baby was quiet now, the massive surge of power from last night completely drained.Kael stepped out onto the balcony, a heavy fur draped over his shoulders. He wrapped it around me, pulling me close."The Council is demanding answers," he murmured. "They want to know what the Twin Flame is.""So do I," I admitted. "The First Alpha called it the 'ultimate balance of light and dark.' But I don't know what that means.""We need to find out before he attacks again," Kael said, his voice hard. "He won't retreat forever."A sudden memory sparked in my mind. My mother. She had been th

The shadow army hit the fortress walls like a battering ram.I stood on the main battlements, Kael at my side, as the black tide crashed against the ancient stone. The creatures weren't wolves. They were faceless, shifting masses of smoke and dark magic, their claws leaving jagged, frostbitten scars on the stone."Archers, fire!" Vera roared.A volley of silver-tipped arrows rained down, but the arrows passed straight through the shadows, doing nothing. The creatures didn't even slow down."They're immune to physical weapons!" I shouted."Then use your light!" Kael yelled, drawing his sword and leaping off the battlement into the thick of the fight.I closed my eyes, reaching for the golden well inside my chest. I pushed it outward, a massive wave of divine light cascading down the fortress walls. The shadows hit the light and shrieked—a sound like tearing metal—as they disintegrated into ash.For a moment, we had the upper hand. The Blackwood warriors cheered, pushing back the dark t

The Council chamber was chaos.Alphas from a dozen packs were shouting over one another, their voices echoing off the stone walls. Lord Marcus stood at the head of the table, looking older and more frail than he had since the Ashen Lands."The First Alpha is a myth!" one of the Northern Alphas bellowed, slamming his fist on the table. "Our ancestors used his story to frighten pups into obedience. He cannot be real!""The tomb is empty!" Vera shot back, pointing to the ancient scroll. "Or did the myth steal his own body?"I sat beside Kael, my hand resting on my stomach beneath the table. The golden light inside me was still humming with unease, reacting to the lingering magic of the Blood Moon."Enough," Kael said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade. Every Alpha fell silent. "We don't have time to debate mythology. We need to fortify the borders and prepare for an attack.""Prepare for what?" the Northern Alpha sneered. "An army of shadows?"The doors to t

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Enemy   Chapter 17: The Blood Moon Prophecy

Three months had passed since the night I became High Priestess. The Blackwood territory was unrecognizable. The once-rugged fortress was now the central hub of the werewolf world. A new Council had been formed, one where Alphas ruled alongside their Lunas, and the old laws of oppression were burned to ash.But peace, I was learning, was a fragile thing.I stood on the balcony of our bedroom, watching the sun set over the mountains. My hand rested on my stomach, a small, secret smile playing on my lips. I hadn't told Kael yet. I wanted to wait until the healer confirmed it, but I knew. The mate bond had felt different for weeks. There was a new, tiny heartbeat pulsing alongside ours."Daydreaming again?"I turned as Kael stepped onto the balcony. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me flush against his chest."Just enjoying the quiet," I said, leaning my head back against his shoulder."Enjoy it while it lasts," he murmured, pressing a kiss to my neck. "Vera said the de
