Chapter 14: The Goddess's Judgment

The pain was blinding.

It felt like Jason was ripping my soul out through my chest, thread by golden thread. The dark magic from the dagger was a greedy, bottomless pit, trying to swallow the light of the Moon Goddess.

I heard Kael roaring my name, fighting desperately against the invisible barrier holding him against the wall. But his voice sounded miles away.

Give up, Jason’s voice hissed in my mind. You were always weak, Elara. You were nothing before me, and you will be nothing without your power.

I looked up at him through the tears of agony. He was grinning, his face twisted with triumph as the golden light poured into his body.

And suddenly, I understood.

My mother hadn't bound my power because I was weak. She bound it because the power of a True Heir cannot be stolen. It can only be given.

Jason wasn't pulling my magic. I was letting him take it.

I stopped fighting. I stopped resisting. I let go of the leash completely.

And then, I pushed.

I didn't just let him take the power. I flooded him with it.

Jason’s eyes widened in shock as the golden light pouring into him became a blinding, torrential flood. The black dagger in his hand began to glow red-hot, sizzling against his skin.

"What—what are you doing?" he screamed, trying to pull away, but he was locked in place.

"You wanted the power of the Goddess," I gritted out, forcing myself to my feet. "Take it."

The divine energy was too pure, too bright, too holy for a heart as dark as his. The black dagger shattered into a thousand pieces. A massive explosion of golden light threw Jason across the temple.

The invisible barrier holding Kael vanished. He was at my side in a heartbeat, his arm wrapping around my waist to keep me upright. I was drained, trembling, but I was still standing.

Jason crashed into the far wall, his body smoking. He shifted into his wolf form, trying to heal, but the golden light was burning through his veins. He howled in agony, shifting back to human, his skin blistered and raw.

Kael drew his sword, his eyes blazing with lethal fury. "I'm going to cut his head off."

"No," I said, my voice surprisingly steady.

Kael looked at me, shocked. "Elara, he tried to kill you. He tried to destroy everything."

"He did," I agreed. I walked forward, stepping over the shattered remains of the black dagger. Jason cowered against the wall, staring at me with pure, unadulterated terror.

"Please," he whimpered, his voice broken. "Elara, please. We grew up together. I loved you. I—"

"You never loved me," I said, my voice as cold as the Ashen Lands. "You loved my power. You loved the idea of owning a True Heir. And when you couldn't have that, you tried to destroy me."

I reached down and grabbed him by the throat, lifting him off the ground. He weighed nothing. The golden light inside me wasn't just magic anymore; it was judgment.

"Jason, Alpha of the Silver Creek Pack," I declared, my voice echoing with the ancient authority of the Moon Goddess. "For the crime of rejecting your fated mate, for the slaughter of innocent wolves, and for the crime of trying to steal the divine power, I strip you of your wolf."

Jason's eyes bulged. "No. No, you can't!"

I pressed my glowing palm to his forehead.

There was a flash of golden light, and a gut-wrenching scream. I felt his wolf—the animal spirit that had given him strength, pride, and status—tear away from his soul. It was a punishment worse than death. He was no longer a werewolf. He was just a human.

I dropped him. He crumbled to the ash, sobbing, clutching his chest where his wolf used to reside. He was nothing now. Just a weak, broken man.

I turned to Kael. He was staring at me with an expression of absolute, awestruck worship.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side," Vera muttered from the doorway, cutting Jax's bindings.

I walked over to Lord Marcus, breaking the chains with my bare hands. The old Alpha slumped forward, gasping for breath.

"Lord Marcus," I said softly. "Can you walk?"

"I think so, High Priestess," he rasped, looking at me with a newfound reverence.

I turned back to Kael. The blood oath pulsed between us, warm and steady. The exhaustion was hitting me hard now, the golden light fading.

"Let's go home," I whispered.

Kael scooped me into his arms, cradling me against his chest. He looked down at Jason, who was still weeping on the floor.

"Leave him," Kael said coldly. "The Ashen Lands will finish what we started."

The darkness was alive. As we rode out of the Blackwood gates, the shadows didn't just block the light; they clawed at us. They had form now—long, skeletal fingers of black smoke that reached out from the treeline to snatch at our horses' legs.I rode at the center of the formation, my golden light radiating outward in a protective bubble. Vera and the elite guard flanked us, their swords drawn, cutting down any shadow that breached the barrier.Kael rode beside me, his eyes scanning the darkness. "How much further?""The Frozen Peak is a day's ride north," I shouted over the howling wind. "But we can't ride all the way. The terrain gets too steep."We pushed the horses hard. The unnatural darkness made it impossible to tell time. There was no sun, no moon, only the crimson glow of the Blood Moon occasionally peeking through the thick clouds of shadow.By the time we reached the base of the Frozen Peak, the horses were exhausted, their breath misting in the freezing air.We dismounted

The Silver Creek warriors didn't move. The silver-haired woman—who I vaguely remembered as a distant cousin of Jason’s—sneered at me. "You think your parlor tricks scare us? You're still the same weak omega who ran away with her tail between her legs."Kael growled, stepping forward, but I placed a hand on his chest."Let me," I said softly.I looked at the warriors. I didn't feel anger. I felt pity. They were clinging to a past that had already crumbled to dust.I reached into the golden well of my power, not to attack, but to command. I let a fraction of the Moon Goddess's authority bleed into the room. The temperature dropped. The air grew heavy. The silver-haired woman gasped, her knees buckling. She hit the stone floor, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her, the other warriors collapsed, their weapons clattering to the ground."I am not the weak omega you remember," I said, my voice echoing with divine resonance. "I am the High Priestess. And I am your only chance at survival."I

Dawn broke over Blackwood, revealing the true cost of the battle. The courtyard was a graveyard of ash and shattered stone. We had lost twelve warriors. Dozens more were wounded. The healers worked tirelessly, their hands glowing with soft green light as they tended to the injured.I stood on the balcony, looking out at the destruction. My hand rested on my stomach, a protective instinct I couldn't control. The baby was quiet now, the massive surge of power from last night completely drained.Kael stepped out onto the balcony, a heavy fur draped over his shoulders. He wrapped it around me, pulling me close."The Council is demanding answers," he murmured. "They want to know what the Twin Flame is.""So do I," I admitted. "The First Alpha called it the 'ultimate balance of light and dark.' But I don't know what that means.""We need to find out before he attacks again," Kael said, his voice hard. "He won't retreat forever."A sudden memory sparked in my mind. My mother. She had been th

The shadow army hit the fortress walls like a battering ram.I stood on the main battlements, Kael at my side, as the black tide crashed against the ancient stone. The creatures weren't wolves. They were faceless, shifting masses of smoke and dark magic, their claws leaving jagged, frostbitten scars on the stone."Archers, fire!" Vera roared.A volley of silver-tipped arrows rained down, but the arrows passed straight through the shadows, doing nothing. The creatures didn't even slow down."They're immune to physical weapons!" I shouted."Then use your light!" Kael yelled, drawing his sword and leaping off the battlement into the thick of the fight.I closed my eyes, reaching for the golden well inside my chest. I pushed it outward, a massive wave of divine light cascading down the fortress walls. The shadows hit the light and shrieked—a sound like tearing metal—as they disintegrated into ash.For a moment, we had the upper hand. The Blackwood warriors cheered, pushing back the dark t

The Council chamber was chaos.Alphas from a dozen packs were shouting over one another, their voices echoing off the stone walls. Lord Marcus stood at the head of the table, looking older and more frail than he had since the Ashen Lands."The First Alpha is a myth!" one of the Northern Alphas bellowed, slamming his fist on the table. "Our ancestors used his story to frighten pups into obedience. He cannot be real!""The tomb is empty!" Vera shot back, pointing to the ancient scroll. "Or did the myth steal his own body?"I sat beside Kael, my hand resting on my stomach beneath the table. The golden light inside me was still humming with unease, reacting to the lingering magic of the Blood Moon."Enough," Kael said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade. Every Alpha fell silent. "We don't have time to debate mythology. We need to fortify the borders and prepare for an attack.""Prepare for what?" the Northern Alpha sneered. "An army of shadows?"The doors to t

Three months had passed since the night I became High Priestess. The Blackwood territory was unrecognizable. The once-rugged fortress was now the central hub of the werewolf world. A new Council had been formed, one where Alphas ruled alongside their Lunas, and the old laws of oppression were burned to ash.But peace, I was learning, was a fragile thing.I stood on the balcony of our bedroom, watching the sun set over the mountains. My hand rested on my stomach, a small, secret smile playing on my lips. I hadn't told Kael yet. I wanted to wait until the healer confirmed it, but I knew. The mate bond had felt different for weeks. There was a new, tiny heartbeat pulsing alongside ours."Daydreaming again?"I turned as Kael stepped onto the balcony. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me flush against his chest."Just enjoying the quiet," I said, leaning my head back against his shoulder."Enjoy it while it lasts," he murmured, pressing a kiss to my neck. "Vera said the de
