Lyra's POV

The wounded came over the ridge in waves.

Some were carried. Some crawled. Most had shifted back to human form somewhere on the field, naked and bleeding and shaking with shock, and the healers' camp filled with the smell of blood and crushed herbs and fear.

"Hold the pressure!" Mira shouted over the din. "Don't let go until I say!"

"I've got him!" the girl from the infirmary tent cried, her hands buried in a boy's torn belly. She was perhaps seventeen. Three weeks ago, she had pra

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Eighty-Six: Through the Bond

Lyra's POVThe pain hit me like a blade through my own chest. One moment I was kneeling beside a wounded boy in the healers' camp, my hands glowing silver against his torn leg. The next, something cold and savage punched through my ribs, and I couldn't breathe."Lyra?" Mira's voice seemed to come from very far away. "Lyra, what is it?"I couldn't answer. I pressed both hands against my sternum, where no wound had opened, and felt a burning emptiness spread outward like ice across a lake. The thread. The one that tied my heart to Cassian's, thin and aching since the shrine. It was screaming."He's hurt," I gasped. "Mira, he's hurt. It's silver. It won't close.""Lyra, you can't know that—""I feel it."The world went white. I heard myself cry out, and the Heart answered, a column of moonlight tearing up from my body into the darkening sky. It lit the clouds like a second dawn, and every wounded wolf in the camp turned to stare. Then it was gone, and I was on my feet, running."Lyra! L

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Eighty-Five: Surrounded

Cassian's POVThe ring of armored wolves tightened around us, and I counted how many of my guards were still standing.Nine. Down from twelve. Down from the company I had come to rescue, who were now safely over the ridge, thanks to the lie that I could hold this ground a little longer.I had been wrong about a little."Backs together!" My voice tore out of my wolf's throat, rough and ragged. "Don't let them split us!"My guards pressed in around me, a tight knot of fur and fangs and blood. Dusk was bleeding across the plain, red and gold, and in that dying light the enemy looked like a tide of black iron.I fought without stopping. Jaws, claws, shoulders, whatever the moment gave me. A wolf lunged for my throat, and I caught it and broke its back against the ground. Another raked my flank, and I felt the wound seal shut within seconds, flesh knitting beneath my fur.It was the only reason I was still alive. And even that was beginning to fail.Cassian, one of my guards sent through

Three weeks ago, she had practiced on a dummy.I knelt beside her and laid my palms against the wound."Move your hands, please.""He's bleeding too fast!""I know." I closed my eyes. "I need you to trust me."She moved.I reached for the Heart, and silver light rose from my fingertips, warm and steady. The torn flesh drew together like a seam being stitched. The boy gasped, and his eyes fluttered open."Moon Goddess," he whispered. "Is that... am I dead?""Not yet." I managed a shaky smile. "Rest."I moved to the next. An

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Eighty-Three: The First Battle

Cassian's POVWe met them on a stony plain between two low ridges, at midmorning on the second day.I had chosen the ground myself. It was open enough to keep their numbers from hiding, narrow enough to stop them from swallowing us whole. It was the best bad choice available."Their vanguard is perhaps two thousand," Darius said, squinting at the dust cloud rising across the plain. "The main body's a day behind.""Then we break the vanguard before it arrives.""You make that sound simple.""It's the only plan I have."Rowan rode up on my left, already stripped to the leather war-harness every wolf wore into battle, light plates strapped where they would hold when the change took him. For the first time in days, his face was calm."I'll take the left flank with the Mooncrest wolves," he said. "Kael holds the right. You and Darius drive the center.""Rowan—""If it goes badly, you fall back to the ridge. Don't wait for me.""I'm not leaving you."Before I could argue further, Lyra rode

Lyra's POVWe marched at dawn, and the whole world seemed to hold its breath. The column stretched for miles behind me, a river of steel and banners winding north along the old trade road. Cassian's green. Mooncrest's silver. The colors of the fourteen Alphas who had knelt in the great hall, and a dozen smaller packs that had arrived in the dark with no more than a name and a sword.By Rowan's count, we numbered nearly twenty-four hundred. It was more than I had ever dared hope for. It was still less than half of what waited for us."You're gripping the reins too hard," Cassian murmured beside me.I loosened my fingers. "Am I that obvious?""Only to me." His mouth curved, faint and warm. "You'll wear a blister before noon.""I've never ridden at the head of an army.""Neither had I, the first time.""I don't believe that.""I threw up behind a tent. Rowan still brings it up."A startled laugh escaped me. The knot in my chest eased a fraction, and the bond between us hummed with a qui

  • Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King   Chapter Eighty-One: A Queen's Voice

Lyra's POVCassian didn't speak to me for two days.He didn't have to. The bond between us had gone thin and quiet, a thread pulled so taut I could feel it humming in my chest every time he walked past. We were polite in the hall, careful in the mess tent, and silent whenever we were alone. On the third morning, he found me on the wall."The Alphas arrived last night," he said, standing a little distance away. "Fourteen of them. Some from packs I've never met.""I heard.""They're waiting in the great hall." He hesitated, and his jaw worked. "I was going to address them.""Cassian—""I'm not going to." He finally met my eyes, and the stubborn, aching love in them nearly undid me. "You're right. I've been speaking for you since the shrine. Maybe longer.""I never wanted you to stop standing beside me.""Then I'll stand beside you. Not in front." He extended his hand, palm up, and waited. "Go and tell them what you want."I took it. The thread in my chest warmed, faint and uncertain, l
