Chris

The city looks different at night. Not just darker. Sharper. Like all the quiet parts hide teeth.

I used to love walking alone in the woods, but here every alley feels like it’s watching me. I know the chances are slim that there’s anything out here more dangerous than I can be when provoked, but I still feel uneasy.

I shove my hands deeper into my coat pockets and cut through the narrow path behind the inn. The moon hangs high above the buildings, unnaturally bright, casting everything in silver and shadow.

“Going for a moonlight stroll without me?” a voice says behind me. I spin instinctively, my pulse already leaping, claws sharpening in defense.

But it’s just Elliott. Just. I’m hilarious.

He steps into the moonlight, hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie, curls tousled like he ran his hands through them too many times. His eyes gleam in the low light, catching everything.

“No,” I answer, too fast. “I couldn’t sleep. What are you doing out here?” He shrugs, “I felt like

Chris & ElliottCHRISThe moment the howl splits the sky, I know it isn’t real.Elliott’s already on his feet beside me, sword half-drawn, blue eyes sharp and electric. The mist around us thickens like breath on glass, curling around our boots and crawling up our legs. I can’t smell a damn thing through it. Whatever’s coming doesn’t reek like it should.Which means it’s not alive. Or it’s not actually here. But it comes anyway. The first wolf steps from the fog like it’s made of it.Its’ body is gaunt, bones showing through silver-pale fur, eyes a bottomless white. It moves like it remembers pain. Like it’s looking for somewhere to put it.“Specters,” I breathe.Elliott nods once, jaw clenched. “They’re watching us.”A second form emerges, then a third. An entire pack, circling. Some still half-faded, their legs vanishing into mist. One bears a ragged brand on its chest. The same broken sun I saw in the journal. Ash-born.They don’t growl. Don’t snarl. Just stare.I shift, claws break

ErikThe forest is louder than it should be. There's an undertone that brushes against the limits of sound. One that buzzes in the hollow of my throat and coils behind my eyes.I keep walking anyway, one step after the other, even as the weight of it presses in like a storm about to break.Scarlett walks ahead of me. Her blue eyes flick left and right, sharp as ever, her shoulders tense beneath the sweep of her coat. The others are fanned out among the trees, forming a loose semicircle.Chris and Elliott stick close together. Just as they always do.Ilsa stalks further left, Caelan attached like a shadow beside her.And me? I’m human. Mortal. The weakest link. The only one who can’t physically challenge any threats. But I’m only useless if I let myself be.The trail narrows and becomes choked with roots. The moment I step between two leaning stones, something presses against my chest like a hand.Foreign magic that doesn’t belong to anyone in our group.Scarlett turns as I stumble. “E

IlsaThe fog comes fast. One moment, I can see the others.Scarlett’s gold-flared stare, Chris’s wolf form moving ahead like a streak of midnight muscle, Erik’s fingers glinting with residual spell-light.Then the next, it’s all swallowed. White and thick and damp, curling like breath held too long.I reach for Caelan’s arm, but he’s not there. Only air. Only mist. The surge of panic this calls forth is something I’ll have to think about later."Chris?" I call. "Elliott?"No answer. The silence has teeth, which coils and buzzes beneath my skin. Like something massive breathing just out of reach. My heartbeat pulses behind my ears, loud enough to drown the quiet. It’s not real, I tell myself. Something that’s not really here can’t hurt me.But even that feels like a lie. Like the kind you whisper to a child before sleep. And then I see the flash of movement. Not behind me, ahead. Between two gnarled trunks thick with moss, a shape flickers. Large and loping. It’s a wolf, but not the wa

ElliottThere’s blood in the air.Not fresh. Not wet. Old. Baked into the bark and roots like something the forest refused to forget.Chris crouches low beside me, fingers splayed in the dirt, nostrils flaring. “It was here.”“Whatever it is,” I mutter.Because I still don’t know what we’re tracking. The scent twists in on itself, loops and doubles back like it’s leading us in a circle. But it feels like a trail. Like we’re meant to follow it. Like something wants to be found.Or wants us lost. That possibility shouldn’t be discounted. The others fan out across the clearing.Scarlett brushes her hand along a twisted trunk etched with runes I don’t recognize.Erik murmurs under his breath, casting a spell to see beneath the surface.Ilsa stands apart from us, her shoulders tense. Caelan is beside her, unreadable as always. But it’s clear something’s changed between them. They’re no longer just fuck buddies.I hate how the forest watches. Not looks. Watches. Like a predator crouched jus

CaelanI forget things I shouldn't.Not just moments. Names. Meanings. The shape of things I know I once carried in my hands. In my teeth. In my heart.I used to have a name that wasn't borrowed. One that echoed with more than syllables stitched by the forest. Now I'm Caelan because Ilsa said it, and the trees didn't correct her. But it's not who I was. Not fully.Today, time forgets itself. The sunlight above bends and snaps like a broken compass. I step forward, and the world repeats.A crow lifts off a branch. Three times. The same wingbeat, the same caw.The forest is chewing on its own tongue, trying to speak in circles.I stand at the center of a clearing I've already crossed twice. The runes on the rocks glow a soft, pulsing amber. My magic prickles beneath my skin. A warning. A remembrance. A tether. The others are behind me, distant but present.I feel Ilsa's presence like a heartbeat on the back of my neck, though she's not close enough to touch. That, too, feels wrong. Or r

ChrisThere were no runes on this tree yesterday. I’m sure of it.The bark of the massive tree at the center of the grove was unbroken. It was just another ancient, gnarled sentinel in a forest full of secrets. No carvings. No glow. No hum of power. But now it thrums like a heartbeat, low and steady, pulsing beneath the moss.Gold and green light coils between the fresh markings, spiraling up the trunk in a pattern that doesn’t make sense to my human eyes, but something in my wolf bristles in recognition.A single deep crack splits the bark where the runes meet, just wide enough to form a hollow. A doorway.“This is a bad idea,” Elliott mutters beside me, his voice tight.I glance over. He’s pale, jaw tense. But he hasn’t stepped back.“You don’t have to come,” I tell him softly. “You can keep watch.”He snorts. “Like I’m letting you walk into a whispering tree alone. You’re reckless, not invincible.”That earns a grin from me. Gods, I love him.I squeeze his hand. “Then let’s be stup
