Signe

I can feel the city humming under my skin in a way it’s never done before. It’s a taut, straining kind of energy. The magical equivalent of a building holding its breath in the second before collapse.

I should be used to it by now. Wards flickering. Spells going slippery around the edges. But this morning it’s different. The pressure isn’t just around the shop. It’s in it.

I light the blue taper in the northern window, scattering powdered rowan bark across the threshold. The wards flare. Then dim. I swear under my breath.

Whatever's pressing in from outside, it's learning. That’s not a good thing.

Cerelia arrives not long after, eyes sharp, coat still dusted with dew from the walk over. She doesn’t bother with greetings. Just sets her satchel on the counter and says, “He left something again.”

There’s no need to ask who he is. Loki’s not making any effort to hide his presence anymore. Instead, I open the satchel.

It’s not a coin this time. It’s a length of silver wire braided in

ErikScarlett doesn’t talk to me for the rest of the day.She doesn’t scream, or throw things. She doesn’t rage like I half-expect her to. No, Scarlett goes quiet. Cold. Her silences are more dangerous than her storms, I’ve come to realize.I find her in the bedroom, sitting at the edge of the bed, fingers twisting the hem of her shirt like it said something cruel.“Can we talk?” I ask softly. She shrugs. “Sure. Victoria’s not around to have her feelings hurt, so I guess you won’t be running off for tea?”I flinch. “That’s not fair.”She laughs, but there’s no humor in it. “Neither is you spending every afternoon with her like you’re trying to piece her soul back together.”“I’m trying to keep her from exploding,” I say in exasperation. “And I’m trying to keep you from breaking under her continued onslaught,” Scarlett fires back. That silences me. I cross the room and sit beside her. I reach out and she lets me take her hand, but it feels like a truce, not a surrender.“You’re the one

VictoriaThe next morning, Erik avoids my eyes.He doesn’t have to say anything. I can feel the guilt rolling off of him like steam from a cracked pipe. I see it in the way he stiffens when I step into the room. In how he doesn’t smile when I make a joke, not even the dry ones he usually likes. He’s pulling away. Again. And there are no prizes for guessing why. “Did she cry?” I ask, because I want to hurt myself apparently. “When you told her I was breathing the same air as you?”Erik sighs. “Victoria.”“No, really. I want to know. Did she throw things? Threaten to hurt me?” He doesn’t look amused. “We talked. That’s all. This is hard for her.”“Of course,” I say coolly. “And how lovely for you both. Thank goodness I’m having such a ball.”He glances toward the open window. Raventon buzzes softly beyond it. Mundane life continuing like there isn’t a goddess of destruction sharing a bed with my ex-best-friend.I still remember how it used to feel when he looked at me. I still burn with

ScarlettI know the second he walks through the door that something’s changed.Erik’s shoulders are tense, his jaw tight, like he’s trying to hold something in and failing. The quiet thump of the door behind him echoes through the house like a warning.I lower my book slowly, watching him cross the living room. “Did training run long?” I ask, my voice carefully neutral. He shakes his head. “No. She just wouldn’t stop asking questions. About magic. About you. Every time I tried to leave, she had another one.”My spine stiffens. “About me? What could she possibly need to know about me?”“She wants to know why you can control your magic and she can’t. Why you seem to ‘glow’ when you use it and she burns out.”I snort. “Maybe because I didn’t get mine from a walking disaster in a pretty coat. Without thinking to ask what the price will be.”Erik finally looks at me. “She’s spiraling, Scar. I don’t think she knows what she’s doing. And whatever Loki gave her, it’s growing.”“Let it grow. L

VictoriaThere’s something to be said for being underestimated.I used to hate it. Used to let it dig into my bones and whisper that I wasn’t enough. That I’d never be the one Erik looks at first. Never the one chosen. But now… now I let it simmer. I let it stew beneath my skin where the magic runs hotter every day. Scarlett doesn’t know what to do with me. That much is obvious. She tries to pretend I’m harmless, just another jealous girl in her shadow, but her eyes give her away. The way her jaw locks when I’m near Erik. The way she clutches him tighter when she thinks I might actually lure him away from her.I matter now. I know I do. The power isn’t just inside me, it wants me. It sings when I use it, when I stop trying to be the nice girl and start being honest about what I want. And what I want is Erik. It’s always been him. From the first day we climbed the roof of his family’s house and watched storms roll in. From the first time he smiled at me like I was important to him. We

ScarlettVictoria has her hand on Erik’s arm again.I spot them through the open window of Häxa as I round the corner, the sun at my back and a bag of fresh bread swinging at my side. She’s laughing, leaning in too close, her fingertips tracing something on the inside of his wrist like she has any business touching him at all.Erik says something I can’t hear, and she throws her head back like he just told the funniest damn joke in the world. He doesn’t pull away.My jaw clenches and the bag of bread nearly tears in my fist. I step through the door and the little bell chimes above me.Victoria straightens instantly. Erik glances over, and his expression shifts to something sheepish. Guilt, maybe. Not because he’s done anything wrong, I know he hasn’t, but because he knows how she gets under my skin.“Morning,” I say, sweet and sharp as peppermint. “Am I interrupting a sacred bonding ritual, or is there still room for someone who actually lives with him?”Victoria doesn’t miss a beat.

ArloThere are too many scents in the city. It’s like chewing glass to get to the truth underneath. But I’ve hunted in worse conditions than this.Raventon might be a sprawl of alleys and corners and smog, but blood still runs through it. And where there’s blood, there’s always a trail.I sniff the air again. Not for the smell of the city, though it’s thick as ever, but for something colder. Stranger. The kind of magic that doesn’t belongs here.Something left a body two nights ago. Signe told me the woman was found behind the library, curled up like she’d fallen asleep and frozen to death. These things happen in the city and there were no visible wounds. But no lingering trace of life either.Cerelia made her way over before the city guard removed the corpse and she said the soul had been unraveled.I call that murder.Chris trails behind me, trying to look like he belongs here, hoodie up, hands shoved in his pockets. He keeps glancing around like someone might catch him breaking cur
