Chapter 2 Into the forbidden forest

last update publish date: 2026-02-10 07:04:23

The deeper Elara walked, the quieter the world became.

Behind her, the lights of the Bloodfang Pack had already disappeared, swallowed by distance and darkness. Ahead, the forest stretched endlessly, ancient trees rising like silent giants beneath the full moon.

This was the Forbidden Forest.

No young wolf entered it alone.

No weak wolf entered it at all.

Elara wrapped her arms around herself as the night air grew colder. Twigs snapped under her feet. Leaves whispered with every step. The shadows between the trees felt alive, watching her, waiting.

But she didn’t stop.

She couldn’t.

If she went back, she would be dragged out by the warriors at sunrise.

If she stayed near the border, rogues might find her.

The only direction left… was forward.

Her chest tightened as she walked. Every now and then, a dull ache pulsed deep inside her where the mate bond had once been. The emptiness there felt worse than the pain.

Alpha Kael had rejected her.

Publicly.

Completely.

The memory replayed in her mind.

You are weak.

Her throat burned.

“I’m not weak,” she whispered hoarsely, though she wasn’t sure she believed it.

A branch cracked somewhere behind her.

Elara froze.

Her heart began to pound.

Slowly, she turned her head, scanning the darkness between the trees. The moonlight barely reached the forest floor now. The deeper she went, the thicker the shadows became.

For a moment, there was nothing.

Then

A low growl rolled through the trees.

Her blood turned cold.

“Hello?” she called weakly, instantly regretting it.

The growl came again.

Closer.

Elara backed up slowly, her breath quickening. She had no training. No weapon. No wolf.

The bushes to her left rustled violently.

Something stepped out.

A wolf.

But not a pack wolf.

Its fur was patchy and dirty. Its ribs showed through its skin. Its eyes glowed with a wild, unstable hunger.

A rogue.

Then another stepped out from the shadows behind her.

And another.

Three rogues.

They circled her slowly, their lips pulling back to reveal yellowed teeth.

Elara’s legs trembled.

“I… I don’t want trouble,” she whispered.

The closest rogue lunged.

She screamed and stumbled backward, falling hard onto the forest floor. The wolf’s jaws snapped inches from her arm.

Panic exploded through her.

She scrambled to her feet and ran.

Branches tore at her dress. Roots caught her feet. Her lungs burned as she pushed herself deeper into the forest, the sound of pounding paws chasing behind her.

They were faster.

Stronger.

Hungry.

One of them leaped.

Claws raked across her back, sending a burst of white-hot pain through her body. She cried out and fell forward, rolling down a small slope before crashing into a tree.

The world spun.

The rogues surrounded her again, moving in slowly now, confident.

They were playing with her.

Elara tried to crawl back, her hands shaking, her vision blurring with tears.

“Please…” she gasped.

The largest wolf stepped forward.

Its jaws opened.

And then the pain inside her chest exploded.

Not the dull ache from before.

This was different.

This was fire.

It tore through her veins, burning under her skin, flooding her body with heat so intense she screamed.

The rogues hesitated.

Elara collapsed onto her side, her fingers digging into the dirt as her body began to shake violently.

“What’s happening ?” she cried.

Her bones cracked.

The sound was loud.

Sharp.

Wrong.

Agony ripped through her as her spine arched violently. Her muscles tightened and stretched at the same time. Her vision flickered between darkness and moonlight.

The rogues backed away now, uneasy.

Something was changing.

Elara’s nails dug into the soil as her teeth clenched. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. The burning sensation spread everywhere her arms, her legs, her chest.

Then a voice echoed deep inside her mind.

Not words.

A presence.

Strong.

Cold.

Awake.

Her eyes snapped open.

For a split second, the world looked different sharper, brighter, filled with scent and movement.

The rogues growled again, but this time… there was hesitation in their posture.

Fear.

Elara tried to speak, but what came out was a broken gasp.

Her body wasn’t fully shifting.

It was changing.

Her eyes burned as her vision tinted faintly red. Her senses sharpened. She could hear the rogues’ breathing. Smell the rot in their fur. Feel the vibration of their paws on the ground.

The largest rogue attacked again.

This time, Elara didn’t run.

Instinct moved her.

She rolled to the side just as the wolf lunged, its jaws snapping where her throat had been. Her hand shot out blindly

And hit the wolf’s neck.

There was a crack.

The rogue collapsed instantly.

Elara stared at her hand in shock.

She had barely touched it.

The other two rogues froze.

Then they snarled and charged together.

Something inside her snapped.

A sound tore from her throat not a scream.

A growl.

Low.

Deep.

Not human.

Power surged through her body, raw and wild. She moved faster than she ever had before, sidestepping the first wolf and slamming her elbow into its skull.

Bone shattered.

The second wolf leaped.

Elara caught it mid-air.

For a moment, time seemed to slow as her fingers sank into its fur.

Then she threw it.

The wolf crashed into a tree with a sickening thud and didn’t get up.

Silence fell.

The forest held its breath.

Elara stood there, shaking, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

“What… did I just do?” she whispered.

The burning inside her slowly faded, leaving behind a strange, heavy warmth beneath her skin.

Her legs gave out.

She dropped to her knees, then to her hands, her entire body trembling from exhaustion.

The world tilted.

Darkness crept into the edges of her vision.

Before she lost consciousness, she heard footsteps approaching.

Slow.

Controlled.

Not animal.

Not hurried.

A shadow appeared in front of her.

Boots.

Black.

Then a deep male voice spoke above her.

“Well,” the stranger said calmly, “that’s not something you see every night.”

Elara tried to look up, but her vision blurred.

“Who…?” she whispered weakly.

The man crouched beside her.

She caught a glimpse of silver eyes.

Sharp.

Interested.

Not surprised.

“Easy,” he said. “You’re safe now.”

His scent hit her then.

Strong.

Powerful.

Alpha.

But no

t from Bloodfang.

The last thing Elara heard before darkness took her was his quiet voice.

“Looks like the Blood Moon has finally chosen someone.”

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Beast   Chapter 87: Fracture of the Bond

The moment Lyra voiced the decision, the covenant trembled as if it understood the weight of what she intended to do. Splitting the bond was not a simple adjustment of power. The covenant had always thrived on unity, on the seamless merging of wolves, guardians, and forest into a single force. To divide it meant reshaping its very nature again, forcing it into something it had never been before. Rowan felt the hesitation ripple through the network like a faint echo. Not doubt. Instinct. The covenant resisted the idea of separation because it had been built to unite. He closed his eyes briefly, centering himself within the bond, and then pushed his will forward with steady clarity. “Trust her,” he said, his voice carrying through every connection tied to the shrine. Across the clearing, wolves tightened their focus. Hands pressed more firmly against glowing roots. Breath steadied. The bond did not weaken. It steadied. Beneath the earth, Lyra felt the shift immediately. The covenant res

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Beast   Chapter 86: The Shape of Power

The forest held its breath as the covenant began to change. It did not shift violently. It did not flare in sudden brilliance like before. Instead it deepened. The silver light that had once surged through the roots like a flowing current now drew inward, folding into itself as Lyra reshaped its very nature. Beneath the earth, where her awareness stood at the edge of the corruption’s core, the glow softened and then sharpened again into something more refined. Something precise. Rowan felt the difference immediately through the bond. The power that once coursed through him like a wild river now moved with controlled intensity, like a blade being honed rather than a storm being unleashed. His breathing steadied as his wolf stilled, not from fear but from focus. “You are changing it,” he said quietly. Lyra’s presence brushed against his through the bond, steady despite the immense pressure pressing against her mind. “It has to become something it cannot predict.” The darkness at the cor

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Beast   Chapter 85: The Awakening Below

The scream did not fade. It changed. What had burst from the shadow tree as a tearing sound of pain twisted into something deeper, a resonance that seemed to vibrate through bone and soil alike, as though the forest itself had become an instrument struck by an unseen force. The ground beneath the clearing shuddered violently, the glowing roots of the covenant flickering as the shockwave from Lyra’s strike rippled outward in every direction. Rowan felt the impact surge through him like a physical blow, yet he did not break contact with the shrine. His hand remained pressed firmly against the ancient stone as his wolf snarled beneath his skin, instincts bracing against a threat that no longer hid in silence. “It is not breaking,” he said, his voice low with grim certainty. Beneath the earth, Lyra felt the same truth unfold with chilling clarity. The strike had pierced the core. It had hurt the thing within. But it had also done something far more dangerous. It had woken it fully. The pr

The moment Lyra recognized the presence within the root, it recognized her in return. The connection was instant and invasive, like a cold hand closing around her awareness deep beneath the forest floor. The silver light of the covenant trembled as it pressed against the massive black structure, illuminating the shape hidden at its core. It was not a creature in any form she understood. There was no body, no clear outline. Only a shifting density within the darkness, something that pulsed with slow intelligence as if it had been waiting for this moment. Waiting to be found. Lyra’s breath faltered though her body remained rooted at the shrine. The pressure in her mind intensified as the presence turned fully toward her. It did not speak in words. It did not need to. Its awareness brushed against hers with an ancient weight that carried no emotion she could name. Not anger. Not hunger. Something colder. Rowan felt the shift immediately through the bond. His claws dug deeper into the sto

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Beast   Chapter 83: Descent Into the Root

The forest did not resist when Lyra reached deeper. It opened. The moment her hand pressed firmly against the shrine once more and Rowan’s strength anchored the bond beside her, the covenant shifted from a surface blaze into something far more focused. The silver light that had spread across the clearing dimmed slightly above ground, not from weakness but from purpose, as its true force began to gather beneath the soil. Lyra felt it like a current pulling her consciousness downward through layers of earth and ancient root. The living network that had awakened now turned inward, narrowing its reach as it sought the origin of the corruption buried far below. Rowan felt the change immediately. The energy flowing through him no longer surged outward in waves but compressed into a steady pressure that pushed deeper into the ground. His wolf stilled beneath his skin, instincts sharpening as if preparing for a different kind of battle. Not one fought with claws or teeth, but with will. “It i

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Beast   Chapter 82: The Root of the Darkness

The shadow tree continued to rise from the torn earth like a monument carved from living corruption. Its jagged limbs stretched outward across the clearing’s edge, dripping strands of black energy that sank into the soil wherever they touched. The ground hissed softly as the covenant’s silver roots fought against the spreading poison. For a moment the two forces met in silent conflict beneath the surface of the land. Silver light and creeping darkness twisting together beneath the earth like rival currents battling for control of the forest’s heart. Rowan watched the towering shape with growing tension in his chest. His wolf paced restlessly beneath his skin as instinct warned him that the battle they had just fought against the Rotbound had been only a prelude. This creature did not thrash wildly like the corrupted guardian. It moved slowly. Deliberately. Every inch of its rising trunk felt ancient and calculating. Lyra felt the same dread spreading through the covenant bond. The for
