The moment their fingers brushed the Core, the world detonated.

Light and shadow erupted in a violent sphere around them, a storm of pure, unfiltered realm-magic that seized their bodies, their breath, their bond. Aria felt her feet leave the ground as the force lifted them both into the air, suspending them in the center of the chamber. The Core pulsed under their hands like a frantic heartbeat—too fast, too unstable, splitting along invisible seams.

Aria’s vision blurred with streaks of gold and black. Erevan’s grip on her hand tightened until their knuckles strained.

“Don’t let go,” he shouted over the roar.

“I won’t!”

The Core cracked.

A shockwave slammed into them. Aria’s spine arched involuntarily, a burning spear of light ripping through her blood. Erevan convulsed beside her as shadow surged into him like a second heartbeat trying to overwrite his own.

Aria felt her magic tear open.

She felt Erevan’s do the same.

Their bond flared—too bright, too raw—exposing everything they w

The explosion didn’t feel like light or shadow. It felt like unmaking.A force without color or shape tore through the chamber, ripping apart the very idea of space. Aria felt the Core rupture—not outward, not inward, but in every direction at once. Shards of pure energy spiraled around them like fragments of a shattered star, each piece humming with the power of creation and destruction.Aria’s body arched violently as the raw force surged through her veins. The breath was torn from her lungs. Her heartbeat stuttered, then raced, then stuttered again. She felt Erevan’s fingers locked around hers—his grip desperate, trembling, refusing to slip free even as the world around them dissolved into nothing.“Aria—hold on—” Erevan choked out, voice breaking under the strain.“I’m here,” she gasped. “I’m not letting go—”Their bond flared brighter than it ever had—bright enough to sear the inside of Aria’s mind. She saw him. He saw her. There were no barriers now, no walls, no illusions of se

Aria’s breath froze in her throat.Erevan’s grip on her waist tightened instantly—as if the Trial’s words were a blade aimed at her and his body moved to shield her before his mind could catch up. The chamber dimmed around them, the newly stabilized Core pulsing with a light that felt suddenly dangerous. The air thickened with a pressure that made both their lungs strain. One bearer. One sacrifice. The words echoed again in the chamber, quieter now, but more ominous for it—like a verdict delivered in finality.Aria shook her head before Erevan even spoke. “No. No. It doesn’t get to choose that. We don’t choose that.”Erevan looked at her with an expression she had seen only once—when he believed she was dying under the Sovereign’s curse. His eyes were already preparing to bleed love into grief.“Aria,” he whispered, “it was always going to end this way.”“No.” Her fingers dug into his shoulders. “Don’t you dare accept this.”But the Trial wasn’t waiting for their agreement.A column o

The scream tore through the chamber like a rupture in reality—light and shadow convulsing in opposite directions, slamming against each other in a violent collision that sent shockwaves across the fractured floor. Aria’s fingers tightened around Erevan’s as the ground beneath them split apart, jagged cracks radiating outward from the forbidden path. The realm tried to reject their choice before their feet even touched it.But they didn’t stop.Together, they stepped forward—and the path reacted instantly.Light and shadow surged upward, twisting around their legs like clashing serpents. Aria gasped as fire flashed through her veins, her magic flaring in wild protest. Erevan staggered beside her, shadows lashing around him like whips. The realm shrieked again, as if the very existence of what they were doing broke a fundamental law of creation. This path cannot hold, the Trial roared, its voice splintered, frantic. It cannot sustain two lives. It cannot sustain the bond.It cannot sust

The darkness did not feel like Erevan’s shadows. His shadows were warm, familiar, alive—this darkness was cold and depthless, a void without edges, swallowing sound and breath alike. Aria tried to inhale, but nothing moved in her chest. Panic clawed at her ribs as she reached blindly through the suffocating black.“Erevan—?” Her voice didn’t echo. It barely existed. Then—a heartbeat. Not hers.A flicker of warmth brushed her fingertips, faint as a dying ember. She surged toward it.Her palms collided with something solid—a body—slumping weight against her hands. Aria’s breath hitched as she felt the coarse fabric of Erevan’s coat beneath her fingers, then the tremor of his breath, shallow and struggling.“Erevan.” Relief flooded her so sharply it stung. “Gods—Erevan, stay with me—”His hand found hers in the dark. His grip was weak, but real. “Aria…”Before either could say more, the void around them pulsed.A low hum rose from every direction, vibrating through her bones. The darkn

The moment the word left his lips, the entire chamber convulsed.Shadows detonated behind Erevan in a violent wave, slamming upward like a breaking tide. Light flared behind Aria, blistering hot, lashing out as if desperate to seize her, restrain her, silence her protest before it could form. The boundary line between them blazed, splitting the floor with a crack that echoed like thunder.Aria’s pulse stopped.“No,” she breathed. “No—Erevan—take it back—take it back—”He didn’t.Couldn’t.He stood rigid, shoulders shaking, jaw clenched so hard she feared he’d fracture it. His eyes stayed fixed on her, black and burning and impossibly soft.Myself.He had said it like a vow.Like inevitability.Like the only truth he had ever lived by.The Trial’s voice rolled through the chamber, ancient and terrible. The Shadow King has offered his being—his existence—his soul.Aria staggered forward, but the pillar of light grabbed hold of her wrists, locking her in place. She cried out, the brill
