Noon arrived with a weight Aria could feel in her bones.

She had showered, changed into clean black clothes, and forced herself to eat even though her appetite was gone. The fatigue from the morning’s training still lived in her muscles, but her mind was sharp. Whatever waited for her in the east wing, she would not meet it looking weak.

The east wing of the mansion was quieter than the rest of the house. The carpets were thicker. The lights were softer. Even the air felt different — heavier, as if the walls themselves had been taught to keep secrets.

A staff member was already waiting for her at the entrance of the long corridor.

“This way, Miss Vale.”

Aria followed in silence.

They stopped in front of a dark wooden door at the end of the hall. The staff member knocked once, then stepped aside.

“Enter.”

The voice from inside belonged to Dominic.

Aria pushed the door open and stepped through.

The room was large and deliberately arranged. Bookshelves lined one wall. A long table sat in the center with several chairs. The curtains were half-drawn, letting in only thin slices of afternoon light.

Dominic stood near the table.

Beside him stood a woman Aria had never seen before.

She looked to be in her early forties. Tall. Composed. Her black hair was pulled into a precise knot at the base of her neck. She wore a dark tailored suit with no unnecessary decoration. Her eyes were sharp, assessing, and completely unreadable.

Dominic gestured toward Aria.

“This is my daughter. Aria.”

The woman studied her for a long moment. Not rudely. Not kindly. Simply thoroughly.

“So this is the one,” she said.

Her voice was smooth and controlled.

Dominic’s expression didn’t change.

“Aria, this is Mrs. Caldera. She handles internal structure and evaluation within the organization. From today, she will be responsible for a portion of your education.”

Aria met the woman’s eyes.

“Mrs. Caldera.”

The woman gave a slight nod.

“You may call me Caldera. Titles waste time.”

Dominic glanced between them.

“I’ll leave you to it.”

He walked out without another word. The door closed behind him with a soft, final sound.

Silence settled over the room.

Caldera walked around the table slowly, never taking her eyes off Aria.

“I’ve read your preliminary reports,” she said.
“Combat potential is developing.
Observation skills are acceptable.
Emotional control is… interesting.”

She stopped a few feet away.

“But potential means nothing if it remains untested.”

Aria stayed still.

“What kind of test?”

Caldera’s mouth curved the smallest amount. It was not a smile.

“A simple one.
I want to know what you are willing to do when no one is watching.
And what you refuse to do even when ordered.”

She turned and picked up a thin folder from the table, then held it out.

Aria took it.

Inside was a single photograph and a short page of information.

A man in his thirties.
Ordinary face.
No obvious connection to the Nightshade pack.

Caldera spoke again.

“This man has been skimming money from one of the Vale shipping routes.
Small amounts.
Consistent.
He believes he has not been noticed.”

Aria looked up.

“And what do you want from me?”

“I want you to decide his consequence,” Caldera said calmly.
“You have three options.
Report him and let the organization handle it the standard way.
Recommend a lighter punishment.
Or recommend something permanent.”

The room felt colder.

Aria looked down at the photograph again.

The man had a wedding ring.
A tired expression.
The kind of face that belonged to someone who thought he was being clever in a system too large to notice him.

Caldera watched her closely.

“There is no correct answer on paper,” she said.
“Only the answer that reveals what kind of person you are becoming inside this family.”

Aria closed the folder slowly.

Her mind moved quickly, carefully.

This was not about the man.
This was about her.

Dominic was not only training her body.
He was measuring the shape of her judgment.

Aria raised her eyes and met Caldera’s stare.

“If he is stealing from the organization,” she said,
“then he already chose his risk.
A lighter punishment would only teach him to be more careful next time.
The standard process exists for a reason.”

She paused.

“But I won’t recommend anything permanent.
Not for this.
Not when the amounts are small and the lesson can still be taught.”

Caldera studied her in silence for several long seconds.

Then she gave a small, almost approving nod.

“Interesting.”

She took the folder back.

“You may go.
Your afternoon schedule remains the same.
Night drills begin after dinner.”

Aria turned toward the door.

Just as her hand touched the handle, Caldera spoke again.

“One more thing.”

Aria looked back.

Caldera’s eyes were sharp.

“The Nightshade boy who visited last night.
Kael.”

The name landed cleanly in the quiet room.

“He has already started asking questions about you,” Caldera said.
“Quietly.
Carefully.
But he is asking.”

Aria’s fingers tightened slightly on the door handle.

“I see.”

Caldera’s voice remained calm.

“Be careful, Miss Vale.
Some debts are collected with knives.
Others begin with curiosity.”

Aria held her gaze for a moment longer.

Then she opened the door and walked out.

The corridor outside felt too bright after the controlled dimness of the room.

She walked slowly toward the main stairs, the weight of the conversation settling into her bones.

A test of judgment.
A warning about Kael.
And the clear sense that every step she took inside this house was being measured.

Aria descended the stairs with a steady face and a cold mind.

Somewhere in the city, Torren was still walking free.
Somewhere, Kael was asking questions.
And inside this mansion, people were already deciding what kind of weapon she might become.

She reached the bottom of the stairs and paused.

Her bloodline stirred faintly under her skin — low, steady, and aware.

The game was getting larger.

And she was no longer only a player being moved.

She was beginning to move as well.

Cliffhanger locked.

The minutes stretched longer without Lucien beside her. Aria remained near the window as instructed, a half-finished glass of wine in her hand that she had no intention of drinking. Around her, the gathering continued in its polished rhythm — low laughter, careful conversations, the soft movement of servers between clusters of powerful people. She could still feel the residual weight of Serena’s attention somewhere in the room. It made the back of her neck feel exposed. Stay in this section of the hall. Do not go anywhere alone. Lucien’s instructions had been clear. But clarity did not make the waiting easier. * * * A server passed with a tray. Aria declined another drink with a small shake of her head. When she turned slightly, she caught a glimpse of pale hair near the far columns. Serena was speaking with a different group now, but her position allowed her a clean line of sight toward Aria’s side of the room. She was not even trying to be subtle anymore. Aria shifted her

Serena did not look away. Even as one of the older men continued speaking to her, her attention remained fixed on Aria across the crowded hall. The interest in her expression sharpened by the second — not recognition exactly, but something colder. Calculation. Curiosity edged with assessment. Aria forced herself to breathe evenly. Lucien’s hand remained lightly against her back, steady and unmoving. “She noticed you,” he said under his breath. “I know.” “Don’t hold her gaze too long.” Aria shifted her eyes away first, letting them move across the room as if she were simply another guest absorbing the atmosphere. Her pulse, however, refused to settle. In her first life, Serena had looked at her with open victory. Tonight the expression was different. More careful. More dangerous. Lucien guided her toward a quieter section near one of the tall windows. “She’ll approach,” he said. “Women like that don’t ignore variables they don’t understand.” “And when she does?” “You give he

The day of the gathering arrived with a deceptively quiet morning. Aria moved through her usual routine as if nothing had changed. She trained with Silas until her muscles burned, ate a light meal she barely tasted, and spent the afternoon in the library with files she could not fully focus on. Every hour that passed tightened the coil beneath her ribs. Dominic did not summon her. Silas did not ask any further questions. It was as if the house itself was waiting to see whether she would obey. * * * By late afternoon, Aria returned to her room and locked the door. She stood in front of the wardrobe for a long time before choosing. The dress she selected was dark, elegant, and understated — expensive enough to belong in the room she was about to enter, but not so striking that it would draw unnecessary eyes. She pinned her hair up in a simple style and kept her jewelry minimal. The silver blade went into a slim sheath strapped along her thigh, hidden beneath the fall of the dres

Lucien’s words followed Aria into sleep and were still there when she woke. If you decide to ignore your father’s order… don’t do it alone. She sat up slowly, the early light thin against the curtains. Her body felt heavy from training, but her mind was sharp. The gathering was two days away. The invitation remained on her desk. And for the first time since her rebirth, she was actively considering disobeying Dominic Vale. That alone should have frightened her more than it did. * * * She spent the morning in the library, forcing herself through reports she barely absorbed. Names, routes, secondary accounts — none of it held her attention. Every few minutes her thoughts returned to the same point. Serena would be at that gathering. People connected to the Nightshade pack might be there as well. And someone wanted Aria to walk in alone. Or not alone, if Lucien’s late-night visit meant what she thought it did. A soft knock interrupted her. Silas entered without waiting for per

The card sat on Aria’s desk like a loaded weapon. She had read the message so many times that the words no longer felt separate from her thoughts. If you want the truth about Serena, come alone. Dominic had forbidden her from attending the gathering. Silas had reinforced the order. Every logical part of her understood why. She was not ready to walk into a room full of power players and remain invisible. Especially not when Serena of the Northern Bloodline would be there. But the card offered something Dominic’s protection could not. Answers. Aria stood by the window with her arms crossed, watching the early light stretch across the estate grounds. The patrols had not lessened. If anything, they had grown more precise since Lucien’s arrival. Everything was tightening at once. * * * She found Dominic in his study just after breakfast. He was signing documents when she entered. He did not look up immediately. “You’re here early,” he said. “I need to speak with you about the g

The note burned in Aria’s thoughts long after she put it away. The Lycan is not here for your father. She sat on the edge of her bed well past midnight, turning the sentence over with careful precision. If the message was true, then Lucien’s presence in the Vale estate was not a simple alliance. It meant he had his own purpose. And that purpose somehow involved this house… or someone inside it. Possibly her. Aria exhaled slowly and forced herself to lie down. Sleep came in thin, restless layers. * * * Morning brought no clarity. She dressed early and went down to the training level before most of the household had fully stirred. The mats were empty. The air still carried the faint chill of night. Aria began wrapping her hands, using the familiar motion to steady her thoughts. Footsteps entered the room behind her. She turned, half-expecting Silas. It was Lucien. He wore dark training clothes and looked as if he had been awake for hours. His presence filled the doorway with
