Aria did not sleep.

She sat on the edge of the bed with the blade across her knees and watched the clock on the desk carve the night into smaller pieces. Each minute rearranged the same question without answering it.

Stay inside Dominic’s structure and let him control the answer Kael received.

Or walk to the east service door and take the risk that the anonymous voice was offering a different kind of control.

Neither option was clean.

Both would cost her something.

At 1:40 she moved.

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Don   043 | Inside the Walls

The secondary reception room was smaller than the main hall and deliberately less impressive. No wide windows. No long table meant for display. Just clean lines, controlled light, and two chairs set at a careful distance from each other. Dominic had chosen it for a reason. It gave nothing away and offered no comfort that could be mistaken for welcome. Aria remained in the east observation room as ordered. The angle of the glass did not reach the secondary reception space. She could only watch the courtyard and the path Kael had taken until he disappeared under the covered walkway. Lucien stayed with her for several minutes after Dominic left. “He won’t keep him waiting long,” Lucien said. “Delay looks like hesitation. Dominic doesn’t advertise hesitation.” Aria’s fingers rested against the window frame. “Will he call me down?” “Only if he decides the cost of hiding you is higher than the cost of showing you.” Lucien’s voice stayed low. “Right now he’s measuring which one burns

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Don   042 | At the Gate

Morning came with the weight of a deadline. Aria dressed early and stood at her window watching the inner courtyard. The patrols had doubled again overnight. Men moved in tighter intervals. The side gates stayed sealed. Even the fountain seemed quieter, as if the estate itself was listening. She had not slept much. The black card with its single line still sat under the comb on her desk. He is coming to the gate tomorrow whether Dominic agrees or not. Tomorrow had become today. Silas collected her for training at the usual hour, but the session was shorter and sharper. He corrected without conversation. When they finished, he handed her a towel and spoke low. “Mr. Vale wants you in the east observation room by ten. Not the study. The one that looks down on the main approach.” Aria wiped her face. “He’s expecting company.” “He’s expecting a test,” Silas said. “There’s a difference.” He left her to change. By ten the east observation room held three people: Dominic near the w

Dawn arrived without softness. Aria delivered the report to Silas before the kitchen staff finished the first pots of coffee. He took the folded pages without comment, weighed them once in his hand as if checking for missing substance, and disappeared toward the study. She did not wait for a reaction. The house had already decided how the day would feel: tighter corridors, fewer unwatched corners, the quiet sense that every door now opened and closed on Dominic’s schedule alone. Training started earlier than usual. Silas offered no conversation about the night before. He simply raised the resistance until Aria’s shoulders burned and her timing had to be perfect or she paid for it in hard corrections. Sweat ran into her eyes. She blinked it away and kept moving. On a short break she stood with her hands on her hips and breathed through the residual tremor in her arms. Silas tossed her a towel. “He’s going to test the perimeter,” he said. Aria wiped her face. “Kael?” “Yes. Me

The drive back felt longer than the one that had taken them to the gallery. Lucien said nothing for the first several blocks. City lights washed across the windshield and vanished. Aria sat with her hands loosely folded and replayed Kael’s face in the low gallery light — the exact moment interest had sharpened into something closer to pursuit. He did not remember the riverbank. He remembered her enough to dig. At a red light Lucien finally spoke. “He’ll request a formal meeting within two days. Maybe sooner.” “I know.” “Dominic will know we left before we reach the gate.” “I know that too.” Lucien glanced at her. “Any regrets?” Aria watched the light turn green. “Not yet.” The Vale estate was fully lit when they returned. Too many windows. Too many men in positions that had been empty at dusk. The moment the car crossed the inner courtyard, Silas was already descending the side steps. He opened Aria’s door himself. “Study. Both of you. Now.” No raised voice. No wasted

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Don   039 | The First Impression

The gallery held its quiet like a held breath. Kael stood beneath the winter coastline painting with the same easy balance Aria remembered from another life. Up close, the years between that riverbank and this polished floor compressed into nothing. The golden eyes were the same. The measured stillness was the same. Only the context had changed — and the fact that she was no longer on her knees. Lucien remained half a step behind her left shoulder. Present. Unmoving. Kael’s gaze flicked to him once, cataloguing, then returned to Aria. “You left the gathering before we could be introduced,” he said. “That was deliberate.” “Yes.” “Why?” Aria kept her hands relaxed at her sides. “Because I decide when conversations begin.” Something faint moved at the corner of Kael’s mouth. Not a smile. Recognition of a boundary. “Dominic Vale’s daughter,” he said, tasting the words. “I was told he didn’t have one who appeared in rooms like that.” “He does now.” “And she arrives with Lucien

  • Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Don   038 | The Version She Chooses

Morning light found Aria already dressed. She had slept in fragments, waking each time the house shifted or a patrol passed beneath her window. The black card sat under the comb beside the blade. Address. Time. No name. She had memorized both before dawn and still checked the card twice, as if the ink might rearrange itself into a clearer warning. Dominic’s lockdown held. The corridors felt narrower. Even the air in the training level seemed claimed. Silas worked her until her arms shook. He corrected footwork with the same flat precision as always, but his eyes tracked her longer between sequences. At the end of the session he tossed her a water bottle and spoke quietly enough that the words stayed between them. “You’re planning something.” Aria drank, wiped her mouth with the back of her wrist, and met his gaze. “I’m following the rules.” “That’s not what I said.” She capped the bottle and set it down. Silas exhaled through his nose. “Whatever you’re carrying, weigh it ag
