Chapter 20

Dolores sat at the table, still feeling a slight discomfort in her foot, but happy that she could walk almost normally. Pedro set a generous plate in front of her: creamy scrambled eggs, golden bread toasted on the griddle, and a glass of fresh, ice-cold orange juice.

“You can eat without worry,” he said proudly.

Dolores smiled, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

“It looks great. Thank you, Pedro.”

She tasted the eggs.

“Mmm… this is delicious,” she praised sincerely.

Nyra was lying down, her muzzle resting against Dolores’s leg. Dolores used her good foot to stroke the serval’s back, gently petting her.

Pedro placed a steaming mug of coffee in front of her.

“Strong, the way I learned from my father. This stuff wakes even the dead.”

Dolores took a sip. The rich, hot flavor slid down her throat, warming her chest.

“Perfect. I think I’m starting to like it here,” she admitted.

Pedro crossed his arms, pleased.

“Good to hear that.”

Since she arrived, she had been feeling a

Chapter 22He looked away before his desire betrayed him. He took a deep breath, controlling the impulse like he would with a skittish horse.Dolores noticed the silence and lifted her face."What is it?""Nothing. I'm just thinking you need to rest more."She smiled. She reached out and touched his forearm, a simple gesture that set him completely ablaze."Stay with me?"He nodded, removed his boots and belt, and lay down beside her.Since when had he become this kind of man?He didn't know.He never had been. But being like this... wasn't bad. On the contrary. It was very good. And if...?No.There could be no "what if" between them. They were from opposite worlds. Lives too different. It wouldn't work, he knew. He had always known. He would enjoy what she had to offer. The now. Whatever was real in that moment. Nothing beyond that. When the time came, each would return to their own life. No promises. No plans. No illusions.Still, as he watched her sleep, her face peaceful and her bo

Chapter 21Total silence.Nyra remained motionless, ears alert and focused on some point in the woods. Dolores felt her stomach sink. She clutched the phone tightly, but before she could descend into panic—Zacky emerged from among the trees, walking hurriedly, as if he had searched half the farm just to find her. As soon as he saw her, relief washed over his face, mixed with worried irritation. He approached, and Nyra relaxed."Dolores. What are you doing out here alone?"She blinked a few times."Looking for… signal. My phone started working. I…" She pointed toward the lake. "I just sat for a bit."Zacky immediately looked at her foot, which was swollen, and his face hardened."You shouldn't be walking like this. I told you not to strain yourself. Did something happen?"She showed him the phone."It was André… my assistant. He's a bit… dramatic."Zacky frowned."Yeah, I kinda got that when I met him." He then crouched down in front of her, offering his arms. "Come on. I'm not lettin

Chapter 19He picked up a steaming cup of coffee and took a big sip before asking:"Where's Cristina?""Must be in the service area," replied Pedro, drying his hands on his apron.Zacky set the cup aside and grabbed the car keys. Just thinking about the paperwork and questions at the police station was already starting to sour his mood."I'm heading out, have to go to the police station. Tell her not to go into my room. I'll be back as soon as possible."Pedro looked up, understanding everything without needing an explanation. The guest. In his room. Sleeping in his bed. Smelling like cowboy from head to toe.He held back an internal smile and merely nodded as the loyal friend he had always been."Got it, boss."Nyra appeared right behind Zacky, staring at him with her golden eyes."You stay."The serval sat next to Pedro, obedient but clearly unhappy about not going along. When Zacky went out the door, Nyra let out a low growl of frustration.Pedro crossed his arms and looked at her.

Chapter 18The patrol car arrived fifteen minutes later, exactly as promised. The sound of the sirens made Nyra lift her head. Two officers stepped out, wearing waterproof jackets and holding flashlights."Good evening, Mr. Carter," said Officer Rivas, approaching calmly while keeping a safe distance from the serval. "Is this the detainee?" he asked, amused by the way the man was tied up like a hog ready for slaughter."Yes," Zacky replied, opening the front door. "I recommend you don’t get too close unless I give the command."Nyra growled low just from the flashlights approaching. The intruder, almost wetting his pants, lifted his face in desperation:"For the love of God! Get this creature away from me!"Nyra showed her teeth, and the man immediately shut up.Rivas raised his hands."All right, girl. We’re not going to hurt anyone.""Nyra. Watch, no attack," said Zacky. The serval relaxed her back just a little but remained seated, watching every breath of the unwanted intruder.Th

Chapter 17They walked through the dark living room, only the moonlight slipping through the broken window. Zacky motioned with his hand."Go, girl. Track."Nyra lowered her head, her body moving like that of a trained predator. She sniffed first near the rug where the shards still gleamed, then followed the scent trail to the door, inspecting every inch. Her tail was raised and her ears stiff. She stopped. Right at the threshold, he opened the door and saw that the wood had been scratched from the outside. He narrowed his eyes."Here... someone forced their way in."Nyra let out a deep growl. The serval left the house, unhurried, to find the intruder. Zacky slipped on the rubber boots by the door. She sniffed the porch, then the mud at the entrance. And then... she went down the steps and continued forward, stopping at the fence separating the house from the fields. Her breathing changed.Zacky caught up with her."Got it?"Nyra lifted her gaze to him and then shot off across the gra
