Chapter 3

Author: Happy Citizen Helen
When I heard that, I instantly froze.

Noticing that the woman in his arms was trembling, Jeremy quickly comforted her with a soft voice.

"It's okay, I'm here now. Don't be scared."

I walked forward and heard my own slightly trembling voice say, "Jeremy, if she's your girlfriend, then what am I?"

Jeremy abruptly froze.

His Adam's apple bobbed up and down.

"I... I just answered subconsciously out of anger. I didn't mean it."

Seeing Sonia's pale face, he instantly made a decision.

"Tell your dad I'm sorry I can't make it today. I can't leave Sonia alone when she's like this."

The emotions that had been suppressed deep inside my heart for a long time surged up violently at that moment.

I clenched my fists so tightly that even my voice shook.

"You can't leave Sonia alone? But what about my mom and dad?! You promised them you would love me forever and would marry me!

"Sonia's not an 8-year-old or even an 18-year-old, she's an adult who can think for herself and protect herself! She doesn't need you to play the hero by claiming to be her boyfriend. Or do you actually want to be her—"

"Enough, Nina Wallace!"

Jeremy interrupted me coldly, gazing at me with frost in his eyes.

"I didn't know you were this kind of person. Your best friend almost got assaulted, and this is the very first thing you can think of?"

I laughed bitterly.

"Assaulted? I saw what happened clearly. That guy saw that she was about to trip and twist her ankle because she's wearing high heels, so he kindly gave her a hand. How on earth was that an assault?!"

Sonia broke free from his arms and looked at me cautiously.

"It's my bad. I shouldn't get in the way of you two meeting your parents. I'll leave right now."

She had only taken two steps when Jeremy caught up to her from behind.

"Stop! I said I'm taking you home!"

He opened the car door, let Sonia get inside, and only then remembered I was still there. He cast a glance back at me.

"Nina, take a cab to your parents' place. I have to deal with this first. I'll explain it to them at a later time."

I clenched my fists tight, then let them go limply.

When I arrived at my parents' house, they quickly sensed that something was wrong.

"I've always said that guy is unreliable. You've been dating for seven years. If he wanted to marry you, he would have done so long ago. His devotion to you is just an act."

Dad was indignant.

I managed a forced smile and turned around to comfort my parents.

"Don't worry, before I leave on Monday, I'll take care of it."

On my way home, my assistant at work suddenly called me.

"Ms. Wallace, this is terrible! Someone filed a complaint against you!"

I checked the complaint form she sent over with a frown.

"This lawyer lacks professional ethics! She took advantage of her work to seduce a client's husband! Please punish her severely!"

There were a few photographs attached.

In the photos, I was discussing work with a client, but the angle made it look like I was proactively leaning in.

One of the photos was even AI-generated.

My boss told me to go back to the law firm to explain myself. While I was there, the client's wife suddenly stormed in.

"You're the wench who seduced my husband, right? I'm gonna kill you!"

She lunged forward like a lunatic. I couldn't dodge in time, and her fingernails left several bloody marks on my face.

"Ma'am, please don't slander me without evidence!"

I rebuked sharply, but she only became even crazier.

"The evidence is right there! How can you still deny it?!"

When she lunged forward again, a hand yanked me out of the way.

"Let her go!"

Jeremy pushed the woman away with a grim face and yelled at the rest of the people in the law firm, "Are you all dead? Call security!"

Coming back to their senses, the crowd hurriedly pulled the woman away.

Still shaken, I caught a glimpse of a somewhat complicated look in Jeremy's eyes.

When we got into the car, he handed me a tube of ointment.

"Put some on. Be careful it doesn't leave a scar."

I took it and murmured a quiet thank you.

However, the man didn't start the ignition. After a moment of silence, he suddenly asked, "Was that woman... telling the truth?"

With one look, I could tell something was terribly wrong with him.He had lost a lot of weight and looked utterly exhausted. He had cut his hair into a buzz cut. When his gaze landed on me, his eyes lit up."Nina, long time no see."I subtly frowned. Because no one else was around, I took a few steps back."What are you doing here?"He looked hurt by my wariness and forced a strained smile."I'm the photographer your firm hired to take promotional shots."That only made me more baffled.Jeremy had always preferred personal jobs. He never took on commercial or corporate gigs.He had always complained that that kind of work was tedious. But this time, he agreed to shoot for a law firm—my law firm."Did you take this job on purpose?"A trace of pain flickered in his eyes as his voice rasped out, "Yes. I just wanted to see you. I was afraid that if I came looking for you out of the blue, you wouldn't see me, so I used this job as an opportunity to get close to you."I came he

Jeremy stood still for second, unable to process what he had just heard."Hank, did you just say Nina's best friend reported her?"Hank was growing increasingly impatient."You didn't know? The one who reported my daughter is Sonia. She puts on this pitiful, innocent act, but deep down, she's vile!"Alright, stop wasting my time. Get out of my sight."With a loud bang, he slammed the door shut.Jeremy froze, his mind blank for a long time. The anonymous whistleblower who reported Nina was actually Sonia.Weren't they supposed to be best friends? His mind was an absolute mess, completely incapable of gathering his thoughts. After a moment, he got in his car, slammed his foot on the gas pedal and drove to the law firm.He needed to get to the bottom of this. When the receptionist saw Jeremy storming in, she immediately blocked his path."Sir, do you have an appointment—Wait, it's you?"She eyed the anxious-looking man suspiciously."I saw you taking pictures the last time.

"Say that again? Where did Nina go?!"He suddenly rushed forward and demanded fiercely. The two girls jumped in fright."Who the heck are you?!"Jeremy's breathing turned ragged. He felt as though the situation was rapidly spinning out of his control."Why has Nina suddenly transferred to Seaborough? Why didn't she tell me? Where is she right now?!"The rapid sequence of questions caught the girls off guard."Are you out of your mind? The whole firm knew about Ms. Wallace's transfer. It was her own request.""Whoever you are, you'd better hurry up and go find her instead of wasting time here questioning us."They rolled their eyes hard at him.Jeremy's brain was a complete mess, and he stood rooted to the spot. There was no way. "Jeremy!"Sonia waved at him with enthusiasm."Why didn't you pick up your phone when I called? I had to come here to look for you."Sonia pouted.Jeremy forced a smile, though it didn't reach his eyes."I'm busy today."Although Sonia knew full well what he was busy with, she still feigned ignorance."What could you possibly be busy with? Surely you're not going to get a marriage license with Nina, right? Stop joking."Didn't you hear? She fooled around with a client. Aren't you mad at all?"Jeremy frowned slightly, but didn't refute her."Come on, let's go. I've booked a photo spot under the cherry blossoms. Come take my pictures."She looped her arm around his to pull him away.To her surprise, Jeremy actually pushed her hand away."Sonia, I'm going to get a marriage license with Nina today. I froze, unable to believe my ears."What did you say?"Jeremy frowned."Nina, to be honest, you aren't even among the top lawyers in your firm. I have no idea why you're so busy every day."He paused, his gaze growing increasingly complex."Sonia mentioned before that when you were handling her divorce lawsuit against her ex-husband, you secretly met up with him several times behind her back. Is that true?"The blood in my veins felt like it was frozen solid.Jeremy did not believe me.All it took was an utterly absurd and clumsy trick.Sonia's ex-husband was not easy to deal with. I had to resort to various tactics just to force him to slip up.I couldn't believe Sonia would twist that into an attack against my character."You don't believe me?"Jeremy pressed his lips tightly together without giving a direct answer."To be honest, it's hard for me not to overthink after something like that happened."The last remaining bit of warmth in my chest thoroughly turned to ice
