Chapter 2

Penulis: Happy Citizen Helen
Jeremy put on an apron and went to the kitchen to make chicken soup for Sonia.

When Sonia looked at me, she immediately noticed that something was wrong.

"Nina, are you unhappy?"

I didn't want to answer that question, nor could I muster a smile.

Sonia struggled to sit up from under the covers and grabbed my hand to explain.

"I didn't mean it. That beach photo spot is really hard to book and I didn't want to miss out, so I called Jeremy and asked him to go over early. You know how much I love taking pictures.

"If it were before, I would have hired another photographer, but last time, a photographer tried to get handsy with me, so I'm scared of hiring strangers now...

"You and Jeremy have such a great relationship, so you definitely don't mind, right? I can only stop thinking about the past when I'm taking pictures."

She softened her voice to act cute with me even though her eyes were bloodshot from the fever.

I sighed silently.

A pang of compassion rose in my heart.

I met Sonia on the day she caught her husband cheating.

I was leaving the law firm to go home and saw Sonia crouching on the ground at the subway entrance.

She was crying so hard her eyes were completely swollen.

She said her husband cheated on her and she was going to catch him in the act, but she was terrified.

At that moment, a strong sense of compassion stirred within me, so I decided to help her.

We rushed to the hotel together. She rushed forward to fight her ex-husband, while I was responsible for taking pictures for proof.

Sonia decided to get a divorce, but her ex-husband secretly tampered with the divorce papers to leave her penniless.

I felt bad for her again, so I became her lawyer and I helped her win that lawsuit.

From then on, we became best friends.

That was why, when Jeremy's phone rang during the previous eight marriage proposals, I told myself over and over again that Sonia definitely didn't mean any harm.

Yet today, I wasn't so sure anymore.

Seeing my expression soften, she quickly shook my arm.

"Please don't be mad at me, okay? Don't worry, I've already found a new photographer. I definitely won't call Jeremy next time."

Jeremy happened to be carrying the chicken soup out of the kitchen right then. Hearing that, his footsteps halted.

"Oh, so you've found someone new."

There was a playful tone in his voice.

"Fine, fine, I guess I've become unnecessary."

Having taken medicine, Sonia felt a bit better and had the energy to banter with him.

"What, now it's my fault for letting you spend more time with Nina?"

Jeremy clicked his tongue and said nothing more.

On the way home, he kept looking out the car window. Something seemed to be on his mind.

That night, as I lay on my side preparing to fall asleep, Jeremy suddenly wrapped his arms gently around me from behind.

"Nina, tomorrow is your dad's birthday, right? I was thinking of inviting him out to dinner tomorrow. It'll also be a good time to inform him that we're getting married. Let's register our marriage this coming Monday. Once we're legally married, you'll have nothing to worry about."

I didn't speak. A moment later, I closed my eyes, feeling really tired.

"Let's talk about it later."

The next day, Jeremy woke up early.

He picked up the liquor that my dad liked and drove to my parents' house.

"I wonder if Hank will like drinking—"

Following a harsh screech of sudden braking, my body was flung forward by inertia.

When I collected myself, Jeremy had already leaped out of the car and sprinted toward a roadside cafe.

Sonia was struggling with a man holding a camera.

"Let her go!"

Jeremy shoved the man away and pulled a pale-faced, terrified Sonia into his embrace.

"What do you think you're doing?! You're just a photographer, so keep your hands to yourself!"

Sonia hid her face in his arms, sobbing.

"Jeremy, what are you doing here..."

"Why do you have to look for another guy? See what happens when you do?!"

Jeremy roared, though the hand resting on Sonia's waist tightened even more.

The man who was shoved lost his balance. His knees bled, and his temper flared as well.

"Who the heck are you? Mind your own business!"

Jeremy's face turned livid with anger, and he immediately replied, "I'm her boyfriend!"

With one look, I could tell something was terribly wrong with him.He had lost a lot of weight and looked utterly exhausted. He had cut his hair into a buzz cut. When his gaze landed on me, his eyes lit up."Nina, long time no see."I subtly frowned. Because no one else was around, I took a few steps back."What are you doing here?"He looked hurt by my wariness and forced a strained smile."I'm the photographer your firm hired to take promotional shots."That only made me more baffled.Jeremy had always preferred personal jobs. He never took on commercial or corporate gigs.He had always complained that that kind of work was tedious. But this time, he agreed to shoot for a law firm—my law firm."Did you take this job on purpose?"A trace of pain flickered in his eyes as his voice rasped out, "Yes. I just wanted to see you. I was afraid that if I came looking for you out of the blue, you wouldn't see me, so I used this job as an opportunity to get close to you."I came he

Without a second thought, Jeremy booked a flight to Seaborough. In the past seven years, he and Nina had traveled to countless cities, but they had never been to Seaborough. It was a remote city, freezing and dry in the winter.Nina once said she would never like a place like that.Yet, she had gone to such a place all by herself. In the bitter cold of winter, how sad must she feel being all alone?Jeremy rushed to the airport carrying almost nothing except the essential documents. To his surprise, Sonia had followed him there."Jeremy, you're not allowed to leave!" she screamed at the top of her lungs, tears streaming down her face.Jeremy only paused for a fraction of a second. He didn't turn back.He had seen right through this unhinged woman. She did not love him at all.She was simply bitter. Her actions were driven purely out of hatred for Nina. When Jeremy refused to stop, Sonia clenched her teeth so hard they nearly shattered, and she blurted out, "If you go look f

Jeremy stood still for second, unable to process what he had just heard."Hank, did you just say Nina's best friend reported her?"Hank was growing increasingly impatient."You didn't know? The one who reported my daughter is Sonia. She puts on this pitiful, innocent act, but deep down, she's vile!"Alright, stop wasting my time. Get out of my sight."With a loud bang, he slammed the door shut.Jeremy froze, his mind blank for a long time. The anonymous whistleblower who reported Nina was actually Sonia.Weren't they supposed to be best friends? His mind was an absolute mess, completely incapable of gathering his thoughts. After a moment, he got in his car, slammed his foot on the gas pedal and drove to the law firm.He needed to get to the bottom of this. When the receptionist saw Jeremy storming in, she immediately blocked his path."Sir, do you have an appointment—Wait, it's you?"She eyed the anxious-looking man suspiciously."I saw you taking pictures the last time.

"Say that again? Where did Nina go?!"He suddenly rushed forward and demanded fiercely. The two girls jumped in fright."Who the heck are you?!"Jeremy's breathing turned ragged. He felt as though the situation was rapidly spinning out of his control."Why has Nina suddenly transferred to Seaborough? Why didn't she tell me? Where is she right now?!"The rapid sequence of questions caught the girls off guard."Are you out of your mind? The whole firm knew about Ms. Wallace's transfer. It was her own request.""Whoever you are, you'd better hurry up and go find her instead of wasting time here questioning us."They rolled their eyes hard at him.Jeremy's brain was a complete mess, and he stood rooted to the spot. There was no way. Nina couldn't have possibly left him.She promised to get a marriage license with him today...His heart was beating so fast it felt like it was going to smash through his chest. A second later, he sprinted back to his car.If Nina had left, her p

"Jeremy!"Sonia waved at him with enthusiasm."Why didn't you pick up your phone when I called? I had to come here to look for you."Sonia pouted.Jeremy forced a smile, though it didn't reach his eyes."I'm busy today."Although Sonia knew full well what he was busy with, she still feigned ignorance."What could you possibly be busy with? Surely you're not going to get a marriage license with Nina, right? Stop joking."Didn't you hear? She fooled around with a client. Aren't you mad at all?"Jeremy frowned slightly, but didn't refute her."Come on, let's go. I've booked a photo spot under the cherry blossoms. Come take my pictures."She looped her arm around his to pull him away.To her surprise, Jeremy actually pushed her hand away."Sonia, I'm going to get a marriage license with Nina today. The photoshoot will have to wait for some other day."Sonia's smile froze."You—are you for real?"Jeremy nodded."It's been seven years. We need to move on to the next phase of

I froze, unable to believe my ears."What did you say?"Jeremy frowned."Nina, to be honest, you aren't even among the top lawyers in your firm. I have no idea why you're so busy every day."He paused, his gaze growing increasingly complex."Sonia mentioned before that when you were handling her divorce lawsuit against her ex-husband, you secretly met up with him several times behind her back. Is that true?"The blood in my veins felt like it was frozen solid.Jeremy did not believe me.All it took was an utterly absurd and clumsy trick.Sonia's ex-husband was not easy to deal with. I had to resort to various tactics just to force him to slip up.I couldn't believe Sonia would twist that into an attack against my character."You don't believe me?"Jeremy pressed his lips tightly together without giving a direct answer."To be honest, it's hard for me not to overthink after something like that happened."The last remaining bit of warmth in my chest thoroughly turned to ice
