Chapter 13

Author: Lilian Green
Autumn turned around and saw a young man standing behind her.

He was dressed in a black suit, wore gold-rimmed glasses, and had a polite smile on his face.

"Yes?" Autumn looked him over and was certain she didn’t know him.

The man maintained his polite smile.

"Hello, I’m Mr. Sinclair’s assistant. My name is Jesse Grant. Mr. Sinclair is waiting for you at a nearby café."

At the mention of Mr. Sinclair, the first person that came to Autumn’s mind was Keith.

Did the Sinclair heir really have that much free time to wait for her in a café?

Selena tugged on Autumn’s arm and whispered, "Autumn, the Mr. Sinclair he’s talking about—could it be that Sinclair?"

"Probably." Autumn nodded.

"You know the Sinclair heir?"

Autumn thought for a moment, then shook her head.

"Not really. My uncle saved him once. That’s about it. I don’t really know him."

That didn’t count as knowing him?

Selena was stunned.

If saving someone didn’t qualify as knowing them, what did?

Selena quickly grabbed her bag from the car and said in a rush, "Autumn, I just remembered that my mom asked me to come home for dinner tonight. I’ve got to go!"

She took off faster than a rabbit, disappearing from sight in seconds.

Autumn shook her head helplessly, then turned to see Jesse still waiting patiently.

Bracing herself, she said, "Let’s go."

Jesse made a polite "this way" gesture, then hesitated for a second.

As they walked, he said to the visibly tense Autumn, "Ms. Lewis, you don’t need to be so nervous. The money transfer earlier went smoothly because Mr. Sinclair helped make it happen."

"Huh?"

Autumn looked at him in surprise, not quite understanding.

"Normally, a transfer of that size would’ve required at least a day or two of review before the funds were cleared. Because Mr. Sinclair stepped in, the process was expedited."

No wonder everything had gone so smoothly—Keith had been helping her behind the scenes.

Realizing this, Autumn lowered her head and followed Jesse, her heart uneasy and filled with uncertainty.

Inside the café, soft music played.

Keith, dressed in his usual black suit, was seated by the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Sunlight spilled across his nearly perfect profile, casting a golden halo along the edge of his face.

Autumn took a deep breath and followed Jesse inside, quietly rehearsing in her head how best to start the conversation.

Jesse walked up to Keith and respectfully said, "Mr. Sinclair, Ms. Lewis is here."

"Good afternoon, Mr. Sinclair."

Autumn quickly smiled and greeted him.

Keith gave a small nod, lifted his eyes to look at her, and gestured to the seat across from him. "Sit."

After escorting her in, Jesse promptly left the café.

Autumn sat down across from Keith, stiff and unsure where to place her hands and feet.

Just then, a waiter approached and asked her, "What would you like to drink?"

"A juice, please. Thank you," Autumn replied politely with a smile.

Once the waiter walked away, she straightened her back, but it only made her feel more tense.

Keith frowned slightly, his lips parting with a cool question. "You seem nervous around me."

"I’m not."

Autumn tried to act casual by placing her hands on the table, but her eyes darted around, avoiding his gaze.

Soon, the waiter returned with their drinks—coffee for Keith, and a glass of juice placed in front of Autumn.

Keith stirred his coffee with quiet elegance. "You’re planning to get a divorce?"

Autumn paused mid-sip. "Yes."

"Do you need help?"

“No need.”

Autumn looked up and met Keith’s gaze. “Thank you for your help today. If it weren’t for you, things wouldn’t have gone this smoothly.”

“No worries.”

Autumn’s phone rang.

It was from the real estate agency.

A few days ago, she had dropped by to let them know she was looking to buy a place.

After giving them her preferences, they told her to wait, and she had been waiting ever since.

Autumn glanced at Keith, then picked up the call right in front of him.

A cheerful voice came through from the other end.

“Ms. Lewis, we’ve found a two-bedroom apartment that’s ready for immediate move-in. Let us know when you’re free to come take a look.”

“Alright,” Autumn replied.

After hanging up, she noticed Keith’s gaze deepen as it settled on her.

“You’re looking to buy a house?”

She took a sip of her juice and nodded. “Yes.”

She was getting divorced—it made sense to find a new place.

Otherwise, she’d have nowhere to go.

“Autumn,” Keith suddenly called her name.

She looked up at him, puzzled.

“If you ever run into trouble, you can call me.”

Keith pulled out his phone and opened the contact screen. “Let’s exchange numbers.”

Autumn wanted to say it wasn’t necessary, but when her eyes met the deep, unreadable look in his, the words stuck in her throat.

Sensing her hesitation, Keith added, “Don’t overthink it. I’m just looking out for you on your uncle’s behalf.”

When Simon and Richard walked in, the first thing they saw was Ginny striking Hector. Before they could react, Luna burst into tears and tried to stop her. “Grandma, what did my sister tell you? Why are you hitting Hector?“Hector just got angry and said those things in the heat of the moment. He didn’t mean it.“You know how Hector is—he has a bad temper, but no ill intent. Please don’t hit him anymore, alright?”Susan choked up as she joined in. “Yes, Mom, I don’t know what Autumn told you to make you this angry, but please calm down. We can talk things through.“Autumn, help me persuade your grandmother. Seeing your brother get hit can’t make you feel good either, right?”The two men at the door exchanged glances, then hurried forward. Simon immediately started shouting, “Autumn, haven’t you caused enough trouble? Every time you come home, you turn the whole house upside down. You’ve really disappointed me.“What nonsense have you been feeding Grandma this time? Don’t you know she’

Though clearly displeased, Susan still forced a smile and said, “Mom, it’s because Luna’s project is about to launch. Simon wanted to reward her, so he gave her a card and told her to go shopping.“By the way, Mom, you called us back so urgently. Did something happen?“Or did Autumn say something to you again, and now you’re planning to take it out on us?”Every time Autumn came home, trouble followed. If something went wrong, it was always because she had said something to Ginny. Susan couldn’t think of any other reason. She had worried that Autumn might have found out their secret, but then she thought again—Ginny already knew too, and she hadn’t been able to do anything about it.After all, she and Luna had the White family backing them. Even if Ginny disliked them and knew the truth, she still couldn’t expose it.For so many years, Ginny had kept her mouth shut, afraid they would use the White family’s power to retaliate against the Lewis family. The Whites ruled over Northhaven li

Zack didn’t look at Ginny, so he didn’t notice how pale her face had become.Ginny let out a sigh and called toward the door, “Mary, let’s go home.”The conflict between them wasn’t something that formed overnight, and it certainly wouldn’t be resolved in a single day.Seeing that Autumn was loved and that Henry’s family lived in harmony brought her more comfort than anything else.Today she had fulfilled her long-cherished wish—to see Henry and her grandson again—and she didn’t ask for more. There was still something important she needed to do when she got home. Since that mother and daughter refused to behave, she wouldn’t mind being ruthless. With that thought, Ginny looked up at Autumn. “Autumn, come home with me.”Mary came in, greeted Autumn politely, then walked behind Ginny.Ginny’s face hardened as she instructed Mary, “Call everyone back right now. I don’t care what they’re doing. No one is allowed to stay away for any reason.”She was determined to tear off Luna and Susan’s

“Grandma’s been living with regret for so many years. She just wants to make things right while she still can. Please don’t stay angry with her, okay?“Ever since she hurt her leg, her health’s been getting worse. She can barely walk, but she still came all this way to see you. Can’t you at least talk to her for a bit?”Because of one terrible choice, Ginny had paid a heavy price. Her eldest son had been useless ever since marrying Susan, constantly opposing her at every turn. Her youngest had cut ties completely, swearing never to return home, and that rift had lasted more than thirty years. How many sets of thirty years did a person get in one lifetime?Ginny turned her wheelchair, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks as she looked at him. “You’ve lost so much weight. I know you still can’t forgive me. I didn’t come here for anything else—just to see you.“You’re having surgery tomorrow. Have you made all the arrangements? If there’s anything you’re missing, just tell Autumn, and

Autumn’s heart clenched. They’d just been talking about her, and she had no idea how much Ginny might have overheard.Without thinking further, she hurried over. “Grandma, what are you doing here?”Her chest tightened with unease. She didn’t dare ask if Ginny had heard the part about Luna.Ginny’s voice trembled as she held Autumn’s hand. “I heard your uncle’s having surgery tomorrow, so I came to see him.”But she hadn’t expected to overhear so much—things she’d never known before. How could that foolish family do such a thing? How could they, right under her nose, join forces with outsiders to bully their own sister? So, Julian had been married all along. No wonder, that day when Luna said she was in love, Autumn had reacted so strongly. And yet they’d accused Autumn of being immature. Her poor girl. How much pain must she have swallowed back then?Ginny had imagined many possibilities, but never this—that Luna could be just as shameless as her mother. While seducing Autumn’s husband

If he had known things would turn out like this, Henry never would have let Autumn return to that family every month.Just thinking about how kind she’d been to them, and how cruelly they repaid her, made his heart ache.Autumn tried to comfort them. “Uncle, it’s alright. Everything’s in the past now. Look, I’m fine, aren’t I?“Auntie, you don’t have to worry about me. I’ll take care of myself, and I won’t let them win.“They’ve tried to bring me down, yes, but every time they’ve failed. I’ve already cut ties with them. I don’t care about them anymore.”She hadn’t expected her uncle to know what had happened, and his outrage caught her off guard. Hearing them defend her so fiercely made her throat tighten. She hadn’t cried when Julian tried to humiliate her, nor when the Lewis family slandered her, nor even when she’d faced armed attackers. But in the face of her family’s concern, her eyes burned, and her nose stung with the urge to cry. She’d always thought herself strong, immune to c
