Chapter Three

Instead of going straight to the small guest room, my feet moved on their own, carrying me down the quiet hallway toward the glasshouse in the east wing.

This was the private herb room Mother and I had built together when I was ten.

It had been our place.

Whenever her illness flared up, we would spend hours here making natural tea remedies and tending to her favorite plants. Mother had taught me which leaves eased her headaches, which flowers helped her sleep, and how to recognize when her breathing was about to worsen.

Some of my happiest memories of her lived inside these walls.

I had lost my bedroom without much thought. That room had only been a room.

But this place was different. This was where I had been a daughter.

A small, foolish part of me hoped that after everything else had been taken from me, this one sanctuary had remained untouched.

I gently pushed the wooden doors open.

The soothing scent of crushed lavender and wet soil was completely gone. Instead, the sharp smell of fresh oil paint and turpentine hit my nose.

I stopped breathing for a moment.

The wooden shelves where we used to keep glass jars of dried herbs were gone. The old wooden table where Mother and I had spent countless afternoons was nowhere to be seen. Even the little ceramic pots I had painted for her when I was twelve had disappeared.

Blank canvases, wooden easels, and messy tubes of paint stood in their place.

Every single thing that belonged to me had been cleared out. Not moved. Erased.

The whole family had simply decided to turn our private haven into an art studio for Sienna.

I stood in the doorway, staring at the painted canvases.

A heavy, hollow pain settled in my chest.

Losing this hurt far more than losing a bedroom because this room had been proof that I once had a place in Mother's heart. Every shelf, every plant, every worn wooden surface had carried fifteen years of memories between us.

Now there was nothing left.

Not even a trace that I had ever belonged here.

"Elora?"

I turned around slowly.

Dorian was standing behind me.

When he looked past me into the art room, his eyes widened slightly. A quick flash of guilt passed across his face.

He had completely forgotten that this place used to mean everything to us.

"I... Elora," Dorian started, stumbling over his words. "Sienna needed a bright space for her painting, so the family thought it was best to give her this room..."

"Dorian! There you are. I was looking for—"

Sienna’s sweet voice cut off as she walked down the hall. She stopped when she saw the two of us standing outside the open door.

Her eyes moved from Dorian to me, and then to the art supplies inside.

A quiet realization seemed to hit her.

"Oh..." Sienna took a small step back, her eyes filling with delicate tears.

"Dorian, is this…yes! It's the same room Elora used to use with Mother for plants?"

She looked between us, her fingers slowly twisting together.

"Oh my word! I didn't realize she would still care about this place so much," Sienna said softly. Her voice trembled.

"If I had known, I would never have asked to use it for my art studio."

She lowered her gaze toward the floor.

"I'm sorry, Elora. I really am. I can pack everything up and give the room back to you right now."

It sounded like an apology. It even looked like one. But somehow, the choice had been placed in my hands.

If I accepted the room, I would become the sister taking something away from Sienna.

If I refused, then I was the one choosing to let go.

I looked at her, my face completely expressionless. "You don't need to pack anything. I don't care about this room anymore."

Sienna bit her lip and lowered her head, looking wounded.

"I only wanted somewhere to paint," she murmured. "I didn't mean to take something that was important to you."

Seeing his precious sister look so hurt by my blunt response, Dorian’s brief guilt vanished instantly, replaced by sharp irritation.

"Elora, watch your attitude!" Dorian snapped, stepping in front of Sienna defensively. "She’s being nice enough to offer the room back, and you're standing there acting like a cold robot! Can't you just accept an apology without acting so bitter?"

I looked at Dorian, unbothered by his anger.

"I am not being bitter, Alpha Dorian," I said, my voice completely flat and steady. "I don't want the room back, nor do I want any compensation for it."

Dorian scowled, clearly thinking I was just throwing a dramatic tantrum. "Stop talking nonsense. You're just upset because things aren't about you anymore. You'll get over it."

I met his gaze directly, my eyes dull and unreadable.

"I only returned to this house to make sure Mother's health is stable," I said, speaking each word slowly and clearly. "Once I know she is fine, I am leaving the family for good. I have no plans to stay here, Alpha Dorian."

Dorian froze.

The angry words died right in his throat as he stared at me in disbelief.

The blue eyes held mine.I forgot how to breathe.I stayed curled against the damp stone wall. My arms wrapped around my head. My knees pressed to my chest. My whole body shook. I couldn't make it stop."Breathe."The voice was low. Velvet wrapped around steel.I tried to breath. My chest hitched. The air came in short, ragged gasps that burned my throat."I can't," I whispered."You can." He said. He didn't move closer. He stayed exactly where he was. One knee on the cold stone floor. His hands resting on his thigh. "Slowly. In through your nose."I closed my eyes. I tried to follow his voice instead of the screaming in my head. In through my nose. Out through my mouth. My ribs still ached. Everything ached. But the trembling in my hands began to ease."That's it," he said. "Again."I did it again. The darkness loosened its grip. Just a little. Enough for me to open my eyes.He was still there. The Lycan King. Valerius Hale.I had seen him once before. Two years ago. From the far end

"I asked you a question, Elora," Damon spat, taking a heavy step toward me. "Or did two years surrounded by scum ruin your ability to speak?"I looked at him, really looked at him.Years ago, Damon Cross was the boy who bought me sweet chestnuts in the market during winter. He was the boy who swore he would always protect me if I ever felt afraid. Now, looking into his hazel eyes, I saw only disgust and absolute, unwavering hatred."I am carrying candleholders because I was given work to do," I said, my voice completely flat. "Nothing more.""Don't lie to me!" Damon growled, his knuckles turning white where his hand rested on his sword hilt. "You think I don't know how your mind works? You want Dorian to see you covered in dirt. You want Madam Evangeline to feel guilty for leaving you in Blackwood! You are trying to ruin Sienna's big day by parading yourself around like a victim!"A low, tired breath escaped my lips."I don't care about the banquet, Damon," I said softly. "I don't car

I left immediately and retreated to the guest room. I didn't wait to hear what Dorian or Sienna had to say. I've had enough of their opinions about how I should feel. But I didn't sleep that night. The small guest room at the far end of the servant hall was cold, the mattress thin and stiff. But it wasn't the hard bed that kept me awake. It was the noise echoing from the floor below. All through the evening, the grand dining hall roared with chatter, clinking wine glasses, and warm laughter. The Caspian family was celebrating. From my window, I watched the sleek black carriages of high-ranking pack officials roll up the driveway to welcome the Lycan King's advance scouts. I had heard Mother’s delicate laugh, a sound I hadn't heard in two years, ring out clear and light whenever Sienna said something clever. They were a complete family downstairs. And upstairs, in the dark, I was just the dirty secret they had temporarily dragged out of the mud.Eventually, I willed myself to sleep.

Dorian slowly pulled his hand back.He stared at me, his mouth opening slightly as if he wanted to ask something, but no words came out. The rest of the drive passed in dead silence. I could tell he was trying to convince himself that I was just putting on a dramatic act. When the car finally pulled up to the Caspian Family Manor, the familiar iron gates felt more like a cage than home. The estate was buzzing with intense activity. Servants rushed across the lawn carrying silk banners and floral arrangements for the Lycan King's arrival. Nobody stopped to welcome me back. Newer servants carried boxes past me without a second glance, completely unaware that the girl standing in dirty prison clothes was once the cherished daughter of this house.Once, those gates had opened for me.Once, servants smiled when I walked through them. Now, I walked through them like a stranger.Dorian cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure as he led me inside."Your old bedroom is being used fo

The boot slammed into my ribs, and I tasted blood."Look at her," a coarse voice rasped above me. "The fallen princess of the Caspian family. Still keeping her mouth shut?"I curled tighter against the cold stone floor of the Blackwood labor quarry, barely breathing through the pain.I could have told them the truth.I could have told them I never sabotaged the Crestmark border defense array. But I had learned a long time ago that silence was the only thing keeping my family’s secret buried.Another kick landed against my side.Pain exploded through me, sharp and blinding. Instinctively, I clawed inside myself, reaching for the white wolf that used to howl in my blood…the prideful beast that once made me the Caspian family's standard-bearer.Nothing. Only a vast, terrifying silence. My wolf had gone dormant eight months ago, broken under the weight of constant silver-lined beatings and solitary confinement. She wouldn't wake up to save me now.She was as dead as my belief in family."
