Chapter 4

Autor: Crystal K
Time flew.

Four days left. Four days until I left this pack for good.

Last night, I was actually thinking about how to say a proper goodbye.

Just to keep up appearances.

Then, this afternoon, I was passing the main hall.

Jasper left his laptop open on the kitchen island. The family group chat was glaring on the screen: "Silver Moon Guardians."

Members: Father, Mother, Jasper, Rhys.

A perfect family of four. Without me—the actual daughter, the future Luna.

The chat logs shattered my last shred of hope.

[Jasper: Once Eliana leaves for the border and we turn the Omega quarters into a memorial, I’ll take Chloe to pick out some new furniture.]

[Mother: Good. Chloe's coming-of-age has to be perfect. We owe her that.]

[Rhys: Leave it to me. Once Eliana is gone, I’ll guide Chloe like a sister, make up for everything she’s lost.]

[Mother: Thank you, Rhys. About Eliana…]

[Rhys: Don’t worry. Eliana will understand. She’s my mate. She’s always been strong.]

Strong.

The word was a poisoned knife, twisting in my heart.

"Are you giving my whole life to Chloe?!" My voice echoed in the hall. Ten years of silence, finally broken.

Silence.

Jasper slammed his laptop shut, looking like a thief caught in the act.

My father frowned. My mother immediately went on the defensive.

“What is wrong with you?” she snapped. “Spying on people’s private conversations? So petty! You have none of the grace of a Luna!”

“Luna’s grace?” My eyes were burning as I stared at her. “Kicking me out to a leaky Omega quarters, is that grace? Pushing my own mate onto another girl, is that grace? Making a private family chat without me—is that what you call Luna’s grace?!”

Rhys rushed downstairs at the noise.

He saw the faint image on the screen, his face stiffened, and he tried to grab my hand.

“Eliana, you misunderstood. This is just about duty. Chloe has no parents, she needs our protection more than you…”

“Is your duty to trample all over my dignity?” I yanked my hand away, tears finally breaking free. “Rhys, I’m asking you, is my strength just an excuse for you to ignore me over and over again?!”

He froze. He opened his mouth, but had no answer.

“Shut up!” Jasper roared, storming over and pointing a finger in my face. “If Chloe’s father hadn’t taken that silver bullet for me, I’d be dead! If you can’t even make this one small sacrifice, then get the hell to the border and think about what you’ve done!”

Get the hell to the border.

I was shaking. I turned to my father, the Alpha, sitting in his chair.

His face was grim. He said nothing.

No defense. No objection.

He was allowing this. This exile.

I stood in the center of the hall, a criminal awaiting banishment.

My crime? I wasn't selfless enough for the title of Luna.

In that moment, all my tears dried up.

I didn’t say another word.

I walked back to the Omega quarters. Locked the door.

Outside, I could hear my mother comforting a frightened Chloe. My brother consoling her. Rhys agreeing with them. The noise died down.

It was like my hysterical outburst was just static, easily erased.

The main house was even livelier in the days that followed.

My mother threw Chloe an early coming-of-age party, with a huge cake.

Jasper decorated her terrace with glowing vines until it looked like a fairy tale.

Rhys came for dinner every night, then helped Chloe practice controlling her powers by the hot spring on her terrace.

Their laughter carried on the wind, all the way to my room.

No one bothered me again.

In their world of celebration, I didn’t exist.

I started clearing out my room in the dead of night.

Anything I couldn't take, I burned.

On the nineteenth day, at 4 a.m.

I stood outside the Omega quarters with a light backpack.

I took out my phone and threw it into the garden's mud pit without a second thought.

No goodbyes. No looking back.

Under the cover of darkness, I caught the first bus to the airport, on my way to the Lycan Research Institute.

At 7:30 a.m.

Sunlight broke through the clouds, lighting up the entire Silver Moon estate.

My mother pushed open the door to the Omega quarters.

“Eliana, have you had enough time to reflect…”

The plate in her hand fell and shattered.

The room was empty. No clothes. No scent.

It was so clean it was like no one had ever lived there at all.

Just as my disappearance sent the family into chaos, the main gates of the estate slowly opened.

The Pack Seer hobbled into the hall. He held an ancient, glowing moonstone.

He looked up at my father, his old eyes clouded with sorrow.

“Alpha,” his voice was frail but heavy. “I unsealed the memories from the battlefield...”

The Pack Seer took a deep breath.

“It’s about the fall of that hero Beta. I think you—and the entire pack—deserve to know the truth.”

When I opened the door to my old home, I saw strangers.Or rather, familiar people who had become strangers. My mother’s hair was completely white. She looked twenty years older. My father stood behind her, stooped, his eyes hollow.Jasper was off to the side, his hands clenched into fists, knuckles scarred. He looked at me with a painful, pleading expression."Eliana…" My mother's voice broke on the first word. She fell to her knees, grabbing my hand, tears streaming down her face."I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, your mother is so sorry…"She sobbed, a raw, wracking sound, trying to purge a decade of regret.I looked at her white hair, at the dark circles under her eyes.I bent down and helped her up."Mom."Just that one word made her cry harder.Dinner was a few clumsy dishes on the table."This is... your favorite rosemary roast," my mother said, wiping her tears. "We tried our best, but it's probably not very good."I looked at the burnt edges of the meat. I felt a faint tremor in my he

The clinking of champagne glasses, and the host's voice rang out."For ten years of groundbreaking work on the Gene-Origin Project, the Chief Contributor Award goes to… Dr. Eliana."The entire hall stood and applauded.I rose. The Institute had tailored a gown for me, silver silk that flowed like liquid moonlight. The power inside me was calm and strong. I was no longer the girl who had to beg for bread.Halfway through the party, a figure cut through the crowd.Dressed in sharp, practical gear, her back straight, her eyes clear and steady.Chloe.She stopped in front of me and bared her neck in submission."Eliana. I'm sorry."Her voice was clear in the noisy hall."I took everything that should have been yours, and I was never brave enough to admit it."I looked at her calmly. "Get up, Chloe."She straightened, her eyes red but resolute."Thank you for leaving," she said. "The ten years you were gone... it was like a slap in the face that woke everyone up."I sipped my drink, listeni

As the first light of dawn crept into the room, a maid pushed the door open."Luna, you're here again."Aria blinked, pulled from her trance. She spent another night curled on the floor of the old Omega quarters. The cold seeped into her bones. Just like it had for Eliana. It was so quiet you could hear the single, looping thought in her mind.I drove my daughter away."Luna, you should eat," the maid said, holding a tray.Aria shook her head. "Leave."She stared at her hands. The hands that had soothed Chloe for a decade but had never once touched Eliana's hair. She laughed, and the laugh turned into a tear. The Moon Goddess's punishment. At the next Elder's council, Alistair's voice was unnervingly calm. "I have decided to pass the title of Alpha to Rhys, effective immediately."No one objected. In the years since Eliana left, his hair had turned completely white. He looked twenty years older than he was. He thought he was passing on a legacy, but all that was left was a joke.On the

"Dr. Eliana, please surrender all outside tech. Phones, trackers, everything."The Institute security officer was all business, her hand outstretched.I handed over my temporary phone."Last chance," she said, tapping the screen. "Confirm you want to erase communication permissions before checking for any pending messages."I stared at the small screen.[Inbox: 0 Unread Messages]I’d thrown my old phone away nineteen days ago. This new one was a temporary device from the Institute, active for only seventy-two hours. In seventy-two hours, not one person had sent me a message. Not my mother. Not my father. Not Jasper. Not Rhys.I thought it would hurt to see that empty inbox. It didn't.I smiled and pushed the phone back to her. "Erase it."She nodded. The screen went blank.I walked through the base's gates, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. The research facility was hidden deep in the mountains, completely cut off from the world. There were no golden mansions here, just rows of l

The pack guards found Eliana's old phone in the mud. The confirmation letter for a ten-year, closed-door research project with the Lycan Research Institute was the final blow."Connect me! Please, just connect!"Aria screamed at her own phone, her finger trembling on the call button. The screen lit up. A robotic voice from the Institute answered."Luna Aria, the Institute operates under Level One Alpha clearance." The cold voice ground every word into her soul. "All participant data is classified. Access denied.""I'm her mother!" Aria wanted to smash the screen. "I just want to know if she's okay!""I'm sorry, that information is not available."The call cut off.Aria stood frozen. Her phone fell from her hand with a clatter. She stumbled out of the main house and found herself in front of the Omega quarters again.Small windows, peeling paint, cold as a tomb. She pushed the door open. Empty. Not a single trace of her daughter left. She suddenly remembered. In the last ten years, she

The old Pack Seer stood in the middle of the main hall, leaning heavily on his cane.In his hand, he held the moonstone from the battlefield, sealed for ten years. The hall was dead silent.Rhys and Jasper stopped in their tracks.Chloe peeked down from the stairs, a flicker of unease in her eyes."I was reviewing the archives of the Blood Moon War. About the 'hero' you've all been worshiping."The Pack Seer didn't waste words. His dry finger tapped the moonstone.A beam of blue light shot out, projecting a scene into the air.The bloody battlefield from ten years ago appeared before them, terrifyingly real. There was no heroic last stand. No noble sacrifice. The projection showed Jasper, cornered by five enemy wolves at the edge of a cliff. At the last second, a lone wolf, a stranger, leaped from nowhere and took the fatal blow for him.And the man they had honored for a decade—Chloe’s father—was hiding behind a boulder. He saw the number of enemies, and his eyes filled with pure terr
