CHAPTER TWO

The harsh, sterile smell of bleach and antiseptic was the first thing that hit my senses when I woke up. My eyelids felt heavy, like they were made of lead, and every breath I took brought a sharp, burning ache to my right ribs.

I blinked slowly, adjusting to the dim light of a private hospital room. The walls were painted a quiet cream, and long linen curtains covered the high windows. A clean IV drip was connected to the back of my left hand, ticking steadily.

"Do not try to sit up too quickly," a calm, deep voice ordered from the corner of the room.

I turned my head carefully. Theodore Vance was sitting in a high-backed leather chair beside the window. He was dressed in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, reading through a stack of thick legal files. He didn't look tired, nor did he look hurried. He possessed an aura of total, quiet control.

"Where... where is Mark?" I asked. My voice sounded raspy and thin, like dry leaves scraping across pavement.

Theodore closed the folder in his lap with a soft snap. "Mark is currently at his penthouse, hosting a private champagne brunch for his mother, Sarah, and his newfound business partners. He gave a statement to the police early this morning claiming you were heavily intoxicated, lost your balance, and fell down the stairs yourself. He also claimed you attempted to assault his guest."

A cold bitterness bloomed in my chest. I stared at the ceiling, watching the shadow of the window frame move slowly with the morning sun. "He thinks he stripped me of everything. He took my position at his company. He thinks I am broke."

"He certainly attempted to," Theodore said. He stood up, walked over to the side of my bed, and laid a heavy blue folder on my bedside table. "This arrived from his attorney an hour ago. It is an updated divorce agreement. Mark is offering you a lump sum of zero dollars. In fact, his lawyers are suing you for emotional damages on behalf of Sarah, attempting to seize the small savings account you opened five years ago."

I looked at the folder, then turned my gaze to Theodore. "Why are you here, Theodore? You are his uncle. You share his blood. Why aren't you standing with your family?"

Theodore leaned against the edge of the bed frame, crossing his arms. His dark eyes were sharp and calculating. "Blood means very little when it is attached to stupidity. Mark is arrogant, careless, and reckless. For seven years, I watched Vance Enterprises grow at a rate that made no sense based on Mark's limited intelligence. I knew someone else was writing his market reports. I knew someone else was predicting the shipping fluctuations before they happened. It didn't take a detective to realize his quiet wife was the engine driving his train."

He paused, his eyes scanning my face carefully. "And then, of course, there is the matter of Titan Group."

My heart skipped a beat. I kept my face totally still, refusing to show a trace of panic. "I don't know what you mean."

Theodore pulled a small silver drive from his pocket and laid it next to the folder. "When I carried you out of that foyer last night, your encrypted phone flashed a primary server ping. Titan Group uses a very specific, military-grade encryption network created by a small software firm six years ago. A firm that was registered under your mother’s maiden name. You don't need to play innocent with me, Evelyn. I have known for six months that the mysterious 'Secret CEO' of Titan Group was sitting in Mark Vance's kitchen making his breakfast."

I stared at him, my mind racing. "If you knew, why didn't you tell Mark?"

"Because Mark would have ruined it," Theodore said bluntly. "He would have tried to absorb Titan into Vance Enterprises and wasted its assets on foolish expansion projects. You built Titan into a global powerhouse in absolute secrecy. That shows brilliance, patience, and a lethal level of discipline. Qualities that my family's legacy desperately lacks right now."

He leaned closer, his voice dropping an octave. "My father left the master family trust to me, but the board of directors is pushing for new leadership next month. They want someone younger. They want Mark. They think Mark is a business genius. If Mark succeeds in signing a joint-venture contract with Titan Group, he will gain enough board votes to strip me of my position as head of the family."

The picture finally came together in my mind. The sudden push from Mark’s side, the mystery investors trying to buy into Titan, the board pressure on Theodore—it was all connected.

"Mark has been bragging to his board that he has a private meeting scheduled with Titan's CEO in two weeks at the Grand Annual Gala," I said softly, a dark realization settling in. "He thinks he’s going to seal the deal and take your seat."

"Precisely," Theodore said, a thin, ruthless smile touching his lips. "Mark sent a proposal to Titan's proxy office three days ago, begging for a fifty-million-dollar cash injection to save Vance Enterprises from a hidden liquidity crisis. He is desperate, Evelyn. Without Titan's money, Vance Enterprises will collapse under its debt within sixty days."

I reached out, my fingers touching the cold surface of the blue divorce folder. "He wants fifty million dollars from the woman he threw down a flight of stairs."

"He doesn't know you are the owner," Theodore pointed out. "He thinks Titan Group belongs to an old, reclusive billionaire living overseas."

I looked up at Theodore, meeting his intense gaze head-on. "What are you proposing?"

Theodore pulled a gold pen from his jacket pocket and balanced it between his fingers. "Sign these divorce papers today. Let Mark believe he has successfully discarded you. Let him throw his victory parties. Let him walk into the Grand Annual Gala in two weeks believing he is about to become the most powerful man in the city."

"And then?" I asked.

"And then, you walk into that gala," Theodore said smoothly. "Not as his discarded ex-wife begging for a settlement, but as the CEO of Titan Group. And as my legally wedded wife."

I froze, staring at him in utter disbelief. "Your wife?"

"A strategic marriage," Theodore explained calmly, without a hint of emotion in his voice. "If you marry me before the gala, your ownership of Titan Group legally merges with my shares in the master family trust. Together, we will hold a sixty-two percent controlling majority over the entire Vance family empire. Mark will not only lose the investment he needs to save his company; he will be forced to bow to you as his aunt and his supreme employer."

The sheer boldness of the plan made my chest tighten. It was sharp, cold, and utterly devastating. It would not just hurt Mark’s pride; it would strip him of his money, his status, and his dignity in front of every single person who had watched him humiliate me.

"And what do you get out of this, Theodore?" I asked quietly. "You protect your seat as head of the family. But what else?"

Theodore looked toward the window, his expression growing unreadable for a brief moment. "Mark destroyed something rare when he hurt you, Evelyn. He thought you were weak because you were quiet. I want to show this city what happens when a quiet woman stops holding back. Furthermore... there are threats coming toward Titan Group that you are not yet aware of. As my wife, you will have the full protection of my private security detail and my legal apparatus."

"What threats?" I pressed, sensing a deeper layer he wasn't fully revealing.

"One step at a time," Theodore replied, handing me the gold pen. "First, we sign."

I took the pen. My fingers were slightly stiff, but as I pressed the tip against the paper, my hand became steady as steel. I signed my name—*Evelyn Reed*—on every line, officially severing my legal tie to Mark Vance.

"Mark thinks I died on those stairs," I whispered, handing the pen back.

"Let him keep thinking that," Theodore said, taking the signed papers. "For the next fourteen days, you rest, you plan, and you prepare. In two weeks, we give your ex-husband the reunion he deserves."

CHAPTER 5The top floor of Titan Group headquarters was dead quiet. The only illumination came from the eerie, pulsing blue light emitted by the silver key sitting on my desk and the gray morning daylight filtering through the window blinds. Theodore grabbed my arm, his grip firm and reassuring. "Leave everything except the key, Evelyn! Move right now!"I snatched the glowing silver key from the velvet box. The moment my bare skin touched the cool metal, a strange, warm sensation rushed up my arm, making my heart race. The blue light pulsed brighter, projecting a series of tiny, floating geometric coordinates onto the palm of my hand like golden dust."It's reacting to your bloodline," Theodore muttered, pulling me swiftly toward the concealed private elevator hidden behind my main bookshelf. "Your biological father built that cryptographic lock to respond strictly to direct genetic contact. Nobody else on earth can activate that key.""Who is coming for us, Theodore?" I demanded as

CHAPTER FOURBy nine o'clock the following morning, the financial world was in absolute pandemonium. Every major newspaper, corporate blog, and television channel carried the exact same front-page image: Mark Vance bowing in shame at the Grand Annual Gala beneath the bold headline: *THE GHOST QUEEN RETURNS: SECRET CEO OF TITAN GROUP MARRIES THEODORE VANCE.*I sat behind the expansive black mahogany desk on the top floor of Titan Group's corporate headquarters, watching the morning sun stream through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The room was cold, clean, and quiet. I was finally sitting in the seat I had earned through eight years of silent, tireless labor. The double doors of my executive suite were suddenly thrown open with a violent bang.Mark burst into the room. He looked unrecognizable. His hair was messy, his expensive suit was rumpled and unbuttoned, and heavy dark circles hung beneath his bloodshot eyes. CHAPTER THREEThe two weeks I spent recovering inside Theodore’s secluded private estate passed in a blur of focused preparation. Theodore did not merely offer me a place to heal; he turned his estate into a command center. Top medical specialists checked my ribs daily, while my personal legal team from Titan Group worked around the clock in the library downstairs. From the screen of my laptop, I watched Vance Enterprises begin its slow, internal bleed. Without my daily oversight, Mark’s upper management was falling into complete chaos. Supply lines were running behind schedule, key clients were complaining about missed deadlines, and Mark was spending most of his time buying expensive jewelry for Sarah and hosting lavish press conferences. He was living on borrowed time, completely unaware that his foundation was crumbling beneath his feet."It is time to leave, Evelyn," Theodore said, entering the study on the evening of the Grand Annual Gala.He brought with him a team of high-end

  • Replacing my Ex: The Matriarch’s Revenge   The Seventh’s Anniversary

CHAPTER ONEI stood at the back of the crowded banquet hall, holding a glass of cheap champagne that had gone warm in my hand. Around me, bright crystal chandeliers lit up the room, throwing sharp white light over women in silk gowns and men in tailored dark suits. Everyone was laughing, exchanging business cards, and clinking glasses to celebrate the seventh anniversary of Vance Enterprises. In the center of it all stood Mark Vance, my husband. He was twenty-nine, tall, dark-haired, and possessed the kind of sharp jawline that made investors trust him instantly. He looked every bit the powerful CEO the city believed him to be. He was talking to a cluster of bankers, smiling that charismatic smile that had once made my heart race. He didn't look back at me. Not once. For seven years, I had been the silent ghost in Mark’s machine. When he started Vance Enterprises in a cramped, drafty garage with barely enough money for coffee, I was the one who sat beside him until four in the morni
