Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
When I turned a corner, only journalists who sensed gossip followed me. No one from the Jackson family came after me.

I refused to answer any questions.

I then took out my phone and started looking for the number of the University of Quiles' Admissions Department.

"I'm sorry, I regret turning you down before. Is it too late for me to apply to go to the University of Quiles?"

The person on the other end of the line was stunned at first, but quickly became overjoyed. "You're Laura Jackson? Back then, I tried my best to convince you to come to our university, but you insisted on going to an ordinary local university. Why did you suddenly change your mind? It's already past the application deadline, so technically speaking, you won't be able to enroll at our university anymore, but I'll talk to my superiors and see if there's any other way."

I was overjoyed when I heard those words and quickly thanked the person on the other end of the line.

Over the past couple of years, I had always tried to prove that I was better than Lily and let my parents see how good I was, so I had always given myself high standards.

But what I didn't expect was that when I came home with my top exam results, my parents had already gone on holiday with Lily.

I called them to tell them the good news, but my parents said angrily, "You knew Lily didn't do so well in her exams, why are you still trying to upset her by bringing up the exam results? Just hang up already! You're making Lily upset for no reason! So what if you've got good grades? You're still a useless country bumpkin!"

Those memories were so overwhelming that I found it difficult to breathe.

Just when I felt suffocated, my phone rang.

"Laura, I've spoken to my superiors and was able to get you a chance to make a transfer! Congratulations! You'll be able to enroll with us in two weeks' time!"

After hearing those words, I finally felt relieved. Tears began streaming down my cheeks.

It was tears of joy. I could finally leave this city and the Jackson family.

I thanked the staff from the University of Quiles and was about to head home to get the necessary documents to make the transfer.

What I didn't expect was that when I opened the door, the house was filled with dazzling lights. It was a party.

Lily was wearing heavy makeup and was swaying coquettishly to the music. All the boys and girls looked at me simultaneously when I opened the door.

Seeing that it was me, Lily turned off the music and furrowed her brows.

"Well, Laura, what are you doing at my house?"

I couldn't be bothered to argue with her, so I went back to my room.

"I came back to get my own ID and documents. It's none of your business."

Lily grabbed my wrist, and the anger was evident in her eyes.

"Let me get this straight. This is my house, not yours! What right do you have to come to my house and take things that don't belong to you? Did you regret what you said at the press conference and come to apologize to Mom and Dad? It's a pity that they're at the airport right now. I'm in charge now, so get out of my house!"

With that said, she pushed me to the ground. I didn't hesitate to get back up and fight back.

Seeing that I actually dared to fight back, Lily was infuriated.

"Are you all blind? You guys leech off me all the time, and now you're not helping out?"

With that said, the crowd surrounded me and began beating me up.

Seeing that I was at a disadvantage, I tried to leave, but Lily grabbed my hair.

"You've been kicked out of the Jackson family, Laura! And now you come back to my house and try to steal things? You deserve a beating, you thief!"

Amongst the chaos, someone smashed a beer bottle on my head. My vision became blurred by the warm blood.

Seeing that my face was covered in blood, Lily screamed. Then I was thrown out of the house.

Before I lost consciousness, I heard Lily's trembling voice.

"Oh no. She'd better not die. If anybody asks, just say Laura tried to beat me up, and I was just defending myself. Got it? Throw her into the back alley. Not many people would go there. That way, we won't be responsible if she dies from excessive bleeding."

When I opened my eyes again, all I could see was white walls.

My grandma, who had been living alone in the countryside, was sitting next to me.

"Bradley, you bastard! Your daughter is now hospitalized because of your adopted daughter! What the hell are you doing right now? How could you not come and check on your own daughter?"

The scene was in complete chaos, and the cameras caught how Lily broke down.My parents' faces darkened as they began accusing me."Laura, how dare you set your sister up like this? Are you trying to piss us off?"I smiled indifferently."She's not my sister."Lily and my parents gritted their teeth in anger and left after finding out that there was nothing they could do.The police soon returned and informed me that they had obtained the surveillance footage from the Jackson family's residence. What I didn't expect was that the footage not only recorded Lily assaulting me, but also captured her setting the fire. The fire that changed my life had been set by Lily.As the investigation continued, I learned that Lily liked to make inappropriate friends and had spent money lavishly for the sake of appearances. Therefore, she soon felt that the money given to her every month wasn't enough. She wanted to inherit the family fortune as soon as possible, so she made a desperate move

Lily's face was covered in tears. She brought forward a couple of young men from the back of the crowd."You were all witnesses to what happened earlier on. Now, tell everyone in front of the cameras about what really happened back then!"The young men looked at each other and said, "We were studying with Lily when Laura suddenly came barging in and tried to take the valuables from Lily's house. She pushed Lily aside as soon as she saw her. As for her own injuries, they were all self-inflicted so that she could frame Lily!"Lily looked satisfied. "Laura, they all saw what happened. There's no way that you can frame me now! I won't hold you accountable for trying to steal from us, and you can drop the charges on me. We can then call it even. We'll have nothing to do with each other from now on.My parents sighed and pulled Lily behind them."Stop wasting time with her, Lily. We don’t want such a stubborn child anyway!"The looks on the journalists' faces changed rapidly. Some of

My mom pointed at me and began trembling. It took me quite a lot of effort to get her to hold the card."Keep hold of it. This is quite a large amount of money that you have spent on raising me for the past three years. I don't want you to lose it."My dad looked at Lily in disbelief as he asked, "Lily, didn't I give you the money to give to Laura? How come she only gets 100 dollars a month? I gave you 40 thousand a month!"Lily trembled and lowered her head. Tears immediately began welling up in her eyes."I... Laura said that she wanted cash, so I'd go to the bank to withdraw the money before giving it to her. Laura, I thought you wanted cash because you didn't know how to use a bank card, but it seems that you were just trying to set me up! How could you do this to me?"After hearing her explanation, my parents felt relieved.I then added deliberately, "Is that so? Then why don't you show everyone your transaction records? It'll prove that you're innocent as well."Lily fell

It was my parents and Lily.My dad looked angrily at the journalists and began driving them away."Get out, all of you! Who said you could interview this ungrateful bastard and ruin my daughter's reputation? If you dare spread any rumors about my daughter, I'll sue you all!"My mom looked at me with a dark face.Lily began sobbing. "Laura, I know you don't like me because Mom and Dad both like me and you're jealous. But don't you know why they like me and not you? Why are you always trying to get attention by framing me? You kept hinting to others that I've been bullying you, but have you thought about how your words will affect Mom and Dad's business? You can't just think about yourself and completely forget about the Jackson family's reputation!"I kept quiet as I listened to Lily's sobbing. "I've already severed ties with the Jackson family. Your reputation has nothing to do with me. Besides, I'm not hinting at anything. You're the one who's hurt me, and that's a fact. I've alr

"Mom, what did that ungrateful bastard say to you? She used a kindness as leverage, slandered Lily, and even declared in front of the cameras that she wanted to sever ties with us. It's a good thing that Lily taught her a lesson! That way, she'll stop causing trouble all the time!"Grandma's right hand, which was holding the phone, began to tremble. She frowned, unable to understand what on earth was happening."Is this what you mean by Lily teaching Laura a lesson? Laura's right arm is fractured, and there's a hole in her head! If I hadn't rushed back after seeing the news about the fire, she might have died on the pavement!""Mom, can't you see that this is just one of Laura's tricks? She showed up in front of the cameras, saying she was severing ties with us, then she used her injuries to frame Lily. She just wants to ruin Lily's reputation. She's just trying to use such methods to drive Lily away!"I shook my right hand, which was now plastered, to stop Grandma from continuing
