The man acknowledged me with a nod. "A trip into town for dog supplies is for tomorrow. There's a water bowl and a food bowl here. A leash, perhaps." Salvetti saw the sight on her face and rushed over to be at her side. He slowly wrapped his arms over her shoulders and pulled her close to him, hugging her gently but firmly enough to calm her nerves. He positioned himself so that she might exit the room if desired.Being held now made her want to get away less urgently.The dog sensed her shift in disposition and hopped onto the bed. This was presumably his attempt to reassure her that she could rely on him just as much.It was met with the question, "What was that?" After briefly discussing something with Salviana in Lanaya, Salvetti entered the little dining room. Salviana had run out of criticism and yelled at him to leave the room before slamming the door. He was about to shoot right then, but he refrained.Already late, they had missed dinner.A seat to his right was unoccupied as he took his place at the head of the table. Sasha ate more than anybody at the table. Many of the females in her group were taken aback by her pregnancy. Sasha, like many of the other ladies, had a troubled history.A long time ago, they had discovered her during a raid on an enemy whorehouse. When she was a teenager, she became drugged and severely injured. Sadly, after examining her thoroughly, Doc informed her that her injuries would prevent her from having children.Then, after 10 years, she awoke feeling queasy and irritable; for the first time in history, Doc had been incorrect.Salvetti's attention was drawn by a sudden movement, and he turned to see. A slice of garlic bread, coated with Claire's handmade butter, was presented to Lanaya by Travis. Lanaya tore off a tiny piece and gave Travis a surprised look after taking an even smaller mouthful. After giving her a mocking grin, Travis turned back to Claire.Then Salvetti witnessed a scene he probably shouldn't have seen. Another chunk of bread was broken off by Lanaya,

He took a peek at Lanaya, pale and trembling as she breathed deeply. She continued looking away from him and down at the floor."Get the crazy dog its own dish and stop giving it yours!"She took a deep breath and nodded her head wildly. She appeared happy that he hadn't gotten rid of the dog, but her voice betrayed her fear.After a little discussion, the table went back to eating quietly. Lanaya's respiration slowed during her meal, and she ate slowly and mindfully. She stopped putting her hand under the table. Perhaps the dog was too full of moving after devouring its meal, as was his suspicion.It was a relief not to hear from his sister. Salvetti found that he didn't need to focus on digestion. For this reason, he often ate his meals at his desk. With a sigh, Salvetti sat down on the couch in his office. The person or people who were wasting time outside his office door should grow up and adopt a hobby. She struggled to find anything at first, but once she did, her face sank, and tears began to drop from her eyes.After a moment, she sat up, panting heavily. Salvetti returned after getting the first aid bag from behind the sink and assisted her in removing the sweater. She seemed numb and expressionless as she went through the motions. Her heartbreak was so profound that her body gave in to his touch without a fight."When asked for details, he said, "When I was thirteen, I went with my dad to one of our stores. The area was a mess after our opponents rained bullets down on it. We were looking for anything we could save as we moved around, but I took a mistake stride and fell on some blood.
