LOGINCole POV
“Go ahead without us; we will meet you there,” my Alpha, Carson, stated through our mind-link. I chuckled at the Alpha, knowing he was taking advantage of private time with his Luna, Marly. I was excited about attending the spring Gala, and more importantly, looking forward to the possibility of finding my second chance mate.
I had avoided the galas for a few years now. Having been rejected by my fated mate who was wanting to mate with an Alpha, I had buried the pain and kept it to myself that I had been rejected. Marly, being a healer, had stumbled upon my secret during a healing session.
I had not wanted anyone to know as I was humiliated at being rejected. At the time I was a Gamma. I had recently been promoted to Beta for our pack, the Full Moon Pack. I was proud of the promotion and hoped it would be a step in the right direction for my second chance mate … provided I got lucky enough to be given one.
As we arrived at the hotel and got everyone checked in, I smiled at the excited chatter among all the pack members. Everyone who was attending was single, with the exception of the Alpha and Luna. The Alpha would be present to conduct the appropriate ceremonies either accepting new members into our pack or wishing the best to those who would be leaving our pack to be with their mates from other regions.
I felt the stirrings of my wolf, Gunner. “What is it?” I asked, immediately going on alert. I had not identified any threat, but I trusted Gunner’s instincts. “Something is off,” he mumbled, as he yawned having just woken from a nap. We had trained hard this morning, and he was taking advantage of the down time.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “I have a feeling our mate is here,” he replied, as excited as Gunner could be. He was a low-key wolf, always calm and sure of himself and his abilities. “Is she in this hotel?” I asked, trying to contain my excitement. “No; but she is attending the Gala,” he murmured as he slipped to the back of my mind.
I felt a stir of excitement in my belly. This is what I had been hoping for but now that it was close, I was uncertain once again of what to expect. I moved towards the elevator and went up to my room. I hung up my suit, before moving further into the spacious area.
It was laid out nicely. A room off to the side was for the bedroom. I had a sitting area, and a bathroom off to the other side. I noticed snacks on the table and moved forward to enjoy them. I knew this was Marly’s touch and I suspected all pack members had snacks in their rooms.
I moved towards the window and saw she-wolves walking out in the courtyard. Could one of them be mine, I wondered. No. I would feel the bond more intensely. I sighed and accepted that I would have to wait until tonight to find my mate.
I looked at my watch. Only a few more hours and I would be holding her in my arms. As I sat there staring outside, taking in the sights, I heard Carson through our mind-link. “We have arrived,” he shared, before asking, “Any clues yet?”. I shook my head, “I have not scented anybody, but Gunner believes she is here,” I shared.
“Oh, that is sooo exciting!” Marly exclaimed, joining our mind-link. I smiled at my Luna’s response. She was so hoping I would find my mate. For her and me. She wanted a Beta female to share secrets with and to plan pack events. I chuckled, “You just want her for yourself,” I teased.
“Of course I do. You two are always ganging up on me,” she teased right back. “Hurry and get ready! I want to be the first to arrive so we can watch for your mate,” Marly encouraged, as I closed the mind-link and realized the time. We would be leaving in an hour, and I still needed to shower and get ready. I moved towards the washroom, as the pending evening loomed in my mind.
Would I be luckier with my second chance mate? As I moved towards the washroom, I heard a light tap on my door. I moved to open it, and sighed when I saw Christine standing there in a very skimpy dress. “I told you I was not interested, Christine,” I said with a bit of annoyance.
“I know what you said, but I do not believe you. I think you are just holding out on me,” she responded, moving to step inside my room. I gently turned her around and nudged her out of the door. “I will see you when we head to the Gala,” I said, shutting the door before she could say anything else.
The last thing I needed was a distraction from tonight’s events.
Jessica POV We had made our way to the holding cells and had entered the building, hearing the screams of my grandmother’s outrage. As we approached her cell, she quieted down, watching as we opened the door and entered. The cell door slammed behind us, as we moved further into the room. “You have finally come to your senses,” my grandmother stated. “No, we have come for answers,” I replied, as she watched me from her seat across the table. She had been cuffed to the table so she could not move and anything she might have as powers or talents would be stifled. “What do you want to know? That your mother has been suffering while you have prioritized this pack?” she responded bitterly. “This pack is my family,” I stated. “Your family is being held hostage. Being tortured,” she conveyed. As if reminding me this was not my family. “Where is she?” I questioned. The woman sitting across from me
Jessica POV Having had enough of my grandmother, Cole had her taken to the holding cells. She screamed in outrage the entire way, but I did not care. She was a distraction that I did not need. “We need to discuss what we learned with Carson,” Cole said to me. I knew he was right. We needed to be prepared, and this was the first hint we had gotten as to why they were staggering their attacks. We entered the pack house and went directly to Carson’s office. Not surprisingly, Marly was already there with Everly in her stroller. “How is she?” I asked Marly, as we took our seats. Marly smiled, “She is great. It was a big adventure for her,” Marly shared. I smiled; Everly was adorable and I could only imagine what it would be like to have my own little piece of Cole and me. Whoa. Where did that thought come from, I wondered. “What the hell was that attack?” Carson questioned. I cleared my thro
Jessica POV There was chaos everywhere. The elderly, women and children were being rushed to the underground bunkers for safety. I could see something falling from the drones and as it hit their targets the wolves fell to the ground, pain evident in the screams. I raced to one who I saw down and felt the wound. It burned my skin, but Belle quickly healed me. “It is a temporary paralysis drug,” Belle conveyed to me. I sat back in shock, “What the hell are we fighting?” I questioned as I thought quickly about how to protect the pack members. I quick tossed up barriers between us and the drones. Some drones were captured between us and the barriers, so I immediately started taking them down with my ability to focus on the offending drones. “Cole, you need to focus on taking them down,” I yelled through our mind-link. Cole joining me in taking out the drones, was helping us protect the members a
Jessica POV It had been a couple days since the attack. It was like we were being tested. The night of the fight and then the waiting. Nobody had let their guard down. We were all on edge, but knew we had to be diligent. We would not risk losing anyone else. We had buried the warriors we had lost. It had been a difficult experience. Knowing these brave men and women had fought for something they believed in, and had lost, was painful for me. I was the root cause of those deaths, and I was struggling to make peace with this reality. As if sensing my thoughts were going dark, Cole took my hand, “You need to move past this, Jess,” he murmured. “I know but it is easier said than done,” I admitted. He smiled sadly at me, as he understood where I was coming from. “Why don’t they just make their next move, for fuck’s sake?” I exclaimed. Carson, Marly and Cole looked up at me in surprsie. “What?” I asked, embarr
Jessica POV “Jessica! Jessica!” I heard as I groggily came back to my body. My head had a stabbing pain in it, and I was trying to remember what happened. I had not opened my eyes yet, but I could hear Cole frantically shouting my name. “Stop yelling,” I murmured. “Open your eyes, beautiful,” Cole said, panic in his voice. I squinted, trying to open my eyes but the light was blinding me. “The light,” I whispered, as I kept my eyes closed. “Okay, try now,” he encouraged. I cautiously opened my eyes and this time there was no light blinding me. I slowly blinked, looking around until my eyes landed on Cole’s. “There you are,” he said softly, as he leaned forward and kissed my forehead. “What happened?” I asked, as I tried to sit up. Cole put his hand on my shoulder, as the doctor continued to check my vitals. “We were hoping you could tell us,” Cole replied. I paused for a moment trying to r
Jessica POV I could feel the tension rising in the waiting area, the longer we were forced to sit with no news. Cole was fuming at the lack of communication from the doctor. I tried to assure both Marly and Cole that Carson would pull through but neither heard me when I spoke. Each lost in their own feelings of loss. I knew I could make a difference, if only I could get past the medical team and directly in to see Carson. As I sat there considering my options, I heard the swish of the doors. I looked up, as Marly and Cole moved to stand in front of the doctors. Two had come out of the operating room. “What is the news?” Cole questioned hopefully. Marly was holding on tightly to Cole’s hand. While I felt a moment of jealousy, I knew she needed his support. And I knew they were only friends. I quickly calmed my wolf and moved to stand with them. Shaking her head, the lead doctor looked at Ma

Cole POV I watched helplessly as Jessica panted through her shift. “What did you say?” she asked me. “I did not say anything?” I responded, hopeful that she might be hearing from her wolf. “Her wolf is starting to return,” Gunner, my wolf, stated excitedly.
