Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
Sandra and Lester held hands and stepped onto the stage to sign up.

When the host blew the whistle to start, Sandra reached up and wrapped her arms around Lester's neck while gazing at him tenderly.

The crowd, ever eager for drama, began to chant, "Kiss him! Kiss him!"

Sandra summoned her courage and gave Lester a peck on his lips before quickly pulling away, smiling shyly. Her face turned crimson.

At once, the excitement soared, and everyone started shipping them as a couple.

"Are they just starting to date? The air around them reeks of love! How sweet!"

"They're such a perfect match. Seeing other people so happy really brings tears to my eyes! You two have to stay together forever!"

I curled my lips in a self-deprecating smile.

I suddenly remembered how, not long ago, I'd suggested we take a cute couple's photo. Sandra dismissed the idea as childish, reminding me we weren't young anymore and didn't need such juvenile displays.

But now, she was willing to kiss Lester in front of everyone.

It turned out that she only found me childish because I wasn't worth it.

I was too tired to watch them flirting any longer, so I turned to leave. But just as I was about to walk away, I locked eyes with Sandra.

The moment she met my gaze, her body froze. Instantly, she pulled away from Lester.

Sandra opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, Lester beat her to it. "Fred, what a coincidence! What are you doing here? You didn't follow us, did you?"

At his words, Sandra's eyes flashed with annoyance. "Fred, were you following me?"

I replied casually, "I'm just out for some business and happened to pass by."

Frowning, she said coldly, "You've quit your job. What business could you possibly have? You're a grown man, Fred. Is there any point in lying like this? Besides, who told you to follow me? You're invading my privacy!

"Fred, I never thought you lacked even the most basic trust in me. If you can't trust me, how am I supposed to trust you enough to marry you?"

In Sandra's eyes, my life had always revolved around her and Wendell Group. She'd always thought that she was the one supporting me.

If she had cared, even just a little, she would have realized that I was better than she believed—and that I had sacrificed a promising future for her.

I glanced at Sandra indifferently and said, "Go ahead and marry Lester. You've kissed him already, so it only makes sense, right?"

Sandra's face turned bright red, and she was rendered speechless.

Full of smug satisfaction, Lester chimed in to stir the pot, "Fred, don't get the wrong idea. I just wanted the prize so badly. Ms. Wendell was just being kind to help me. Please don't take it the wrong way."

I knew that Lester was just trying to provoke me. If this had been before, I'd have been furious, demanding an explanation from Sandra.

Now, I merely looked at them coldly and sneered. "I'm done with Sandra. Don't worry. Even if you two were to sleep together right here, I wouldn't care."

Lester seemed surprised that I wasn't reacting.

Sandra's expression darkened even further. "Fred, I've explained myself to you. What's all this sarcasm for?"

I ignored her and walked past, leaving without a second glance.

By the time I got home, my phone was buzzing with messages from Sandra, one after another.

"Fred, why did you move out?

"Throwing a tantrum is one thing, but this is too much!"

She only noticed I had moved out that day, when I'd already left yesterday. That alone proved how little she cared.

I turned to Mom and asked, "What do you mean by that, Mom? Has Sandra been bothering you before Ariana and I came to see you?"Mom nodded. "She's been coming over with gifts this whole time, trying to get me to put in a good word so you two can get back together. But every time, I kicked her out. Who would've known that she'd refuse to give up? Here she is again!"I knew there had to be a reason Sandra had been so quiet lately. It turned out that after realizing she couldn't sway me, she'd started harassing Mom instead. While I was still processing all this, Sandra charged toward us and reached for the emerald bracelet. "This is mine! Mrs. Sloan, you clearly said that I was the only one you'd acknowledge as your daughter-in-law!"Mom had wanted to give Sandra the bracelet before, but Sandra had found it tacky and returned it. Now, even if she wanted it, it would never be hers anymore.Mom pushed Sandra aside and quickly put the bracelet on for Ariana. "From now on, Ari is the only

"Only people with no real ability would believe nonsense like that," Ariana said.Warmth spread through my chest at her words. My nose stung; years of pent-up grievance made me pull her into a tight hug. "Being with you is great, Ari."Not long after that, I brought Ariana back to my hometown and introduced her to Mom.Mom's face lit up with joy when she saw us together, and she nodded approvingly. "This is lovely! Ari is a wonderful woman. You'd better not let her down, Fred!"Ariana was polite and responded warmly to everything Mom said. She smiled the whole time, too. She even jumped in to help when Mom cooked.I couldn't help thinking back to the first time I'd brought Sandra to my hometown. Her expression had gone stiff the moment she'd seen the modest, outdated living conditions, and her every move had dripped with disdain. When Mom cooked, she'd shown no intention of helping. All she'd done was watch with cold detachment.Later, when Mom got overwhelmed and asked Sandra t

The onlookers immediately turned on Sandra as they watched the drama unfold."How do you screw up the ring size for a proposal?""No wonder the guy said no. I wouldn't accept it, either! Who could, when she's so careless?"I took off the diamond ring and tossed it to Sandra. "This is in Lester's size, right? It looks like he needs it more than I do. Give it to him."Sandra ran after me frantically. "Fred, wait! I'm sorry. I made a mistake! I can have a new one custom-made for you! Don't go, please! I'll do anything as long as you'll forgive me!"I stopped and looked at her coldly. "Is that so? Then do me a favor and stop clinging to me. Please disappear from my world!"Sandra shook her head, tears welling in her eyes again. "Don't be so cruel to me, please. That's the one thing I can't do…"She stepped toward me while sobbing.I'd had enough. I pulled out my phone, ready to call the cops. "These past few days, your relentless pestering has seriously affected my life. I'm callin

"Are you two… Fred, answer me!" Sandra cried.I couldn't be bothered to respond and turned to leave, but she clung to me tightly."I thought I was the one in the wrong, but it turns out you're the one who changed! I'm your fiancee. I even bought a diamond ring to propose to you. How could you do this to me?" she screeched. In an instant, the people around us started to lap up the drama. They assumed I was the scumbag; they cursed me for being cold, shameless, and a heartless player."Man, society's going downhill. He's got a fiancee, and he's messing around with another woman. What a jerk!""He's a total scumbag. The woman's love is wasted on him!"As the crowd piled on, Sandra just watched, never once trying to shut them down. She was clearly venting her anger. She kept saying that she loved me, but this was who she really was.I knew very well that she was waiting for me to apologize to her and coax her like I used to. Too bad she was going to be disappointed. I wasn't the sam

"I'm fine, but you… That has to hurt, right?" Ariana asked.I smiled. "I'm thick-skinned. It's no big deal. It's a good thing your face didn't get hurt. I'd feel awful if you ended up disfigured."Ariana blushed; even her ears became a suspicious shade of red.An ugly look crept onto Sandra's face. She'd been completely left out while Ariana and I chatted and laughed. She snapped, "Your tenderness belongs to me, Fred. I won't let you be gentle to other women!"With that, she rushed over again, trying to pull us apart. Her repeated outbursts finally enraged the other moviegoers around us. They had watched the whole thing, and her voice had been interrupting them. At this point, they'd had enough and started complaining."Seriously? Can you knock it off? The guy already has a girlfriend, so let go. Why cling to him like that?""Yeah, you're acting like a crazy person! You can't compare to his current girlfriend at all, and you're slandering her, making her out to be some horrible

Sandra trembled in rage, feeling stung by my retort. Her face turned steely, then pale. She kept oscillating between the two."You're mine. I won't let you be with anyone else!" In a fit of rage, she lunged forward to tear me and Ariana apart. However, Ariana reached out and shoved her aside. "The way you cling to Fred is so shrew-like, you know. Honestly, it's ugly. Fred is my man now; you broke his heart back then by not cherishing him. But don't worry, because from now on, I'll give him all the love you never did!"Sandra seethed. She shot Ariana a vicious glare and screeched, "Whatever happened between us is none of your business! Who do you think you are? You're just the other woman who barged into our relationship!"This is all your fault, you homewrecker! If it weren't for you, Fred would never treat me like this. You must've cast a spell on him or something! I'll ruin your face now so you can't seduce anyone anymore!"With that, she lunged, her fingers slashing toward Aria
