Chapter 9

Author: Sweetie Moore
After that, I heard from mutual friends that since neither the bride nor the groom showed up, Sandra was forced to cancel the wedding. She had to apologize to the guests again and again.

The incident ruined her reputation. She became the fodder for gossip among friends and relatives.

Fortunately, I'd already told my side of the story to my friends. The wedding was filled with her friends and family, so she was the only one left looking like a fool. I wasn't affected at all.

From that day on, Sandra held a deep grudge against me. She called and texted nonstop, blaming me for everything.

"Fred, this is all your fault. I can't even show my face anymore because of you!

"Do you know what my relatives said about me? They said I'm a discarded woman!

"You've really crossed the line this time. If you don't show some sincerity, I will never forgive you!"

By "sincerity", she meant the multimillion-dollar deals I used to bring in for Wendell Group and the surprises I would prepare for her.

Back then, we fought often. Every time she got angry, I would secure a deal worth tens of millions of dollars to calm her down. I would also go out of my way to find people who could get her custom jewelry and limited-edition items she liked, all to make her happy.

So this time, Sandra instinctively assumed I would do the same again.

Thinking back now, I really had been pouring my heart into someone who didn't deserve it. I had been completely blinded by love. It was pathetic.

I didn't reply and left her hanging.

Instead of stopping, Sandra escalated and bombarded me with messages.

"Fred, why aren't you replying? Don't leave me on read!

"I know you saw my messages. Stop playing dead and say something!

"Say something!"

Yet, she used to ignore me all the time. Whenever I expressed my frustration, she'd just dismiss it as me making a scene or acting crazy.

So why was it unacceptable when I treated her the same way she had once treated me?

It turned out that she only felt pain when she experienced it herself.

Annoyed, I blocked and deleted her contact outright.

In a fit of rage, Sandra went as far as blacklisting me in the industry, trying to end my career completely.

I didn't care at all. She didn't know that I had already found a new job.

I thought that we would never see each other again after that. But life rarely went the way one hoped.

That day, after clocking in at work, I walked into the company and saw Sandra and Lester chatting and laughing as they approached from a distance.

"Lester, make sure you perform well in this meeting. If you close this deal, I'll arrange a promotion for you afterward," Sandra said.

"Ms. Wendell, you're so good to me," Lester replied sweetly.

As they chatted, Sandra noticed me. Her expression instantly turned cold. "Fred, what are you doing here?"

Lester glanced at me, half-smiling. His tone dripped with mockery as he said, "Ms. Wendell, isn't it obvious? Fred must be too embarrassed to beg you at the office, so he came all the way here to wait for you to get his job back."

Sandra immediately put two and two together. Her expression remained cold, but it softened just a fraction. She snorted. "What, you couldn't find a job? Regretting it after hitting walls everywhere, so you followed me here?

"Fred, I gave you a way out before, and you refused it. You even blocked and deleted my number. Now you're coming back to pester me? You're really getting more and more ridiculous.

"Actually, I could allow you to come back, but you'll have to start as an intern, and you need to apologize to Lester first. Otherwise, don't even think about it."

Sandra tilted her chin up, regaining that arrogant air of a CEO.

I turned to Mom and asked, "What do you mean by that, Mom? Has Sandra been bothering you before Ariana and I came to see you?"Mom nodded. "She's been coming over with gifts this whole time, trying to get me to put in a good word so you two can get back together. But every time, I kicked her out. Who would've known that she'd refuse to give up? Here she is again!"I knew there had to be a reason Sandra had been so quiet lately. It turned out that after realizing she couldn't sway me, she'd started harassing Mom instead. While I was still processing all this, Sandra charged toward us and reached for the emerald bracelet. "This is mine! Mrs. Sloan, you clearly said that I was the only one you'd acknowledge as your daughter-in-law!"Mom had wanted to give Sandra the bracelet before, but Sandra had found it tacky and returned it. Now, even if she wanted it, it would never be hers anymore.Mom pushed Sandra aside and quickly put the bracelet on for Ariana. "From now on, Ari is the only

"Only people with no real ability would believe nonsense like that," Ariana said.Warmth spread through my chest at her words. My nose stung; years of pent-up grievance made me pull her into a tight hug. "Being with you is great, Ari."Not long after that, I brought Ariana back to my hometown and introduced her to Mom.Mom's face lit up with joy when she saw us together, and she nodded approvingly. "This is lovely! Ari is a wonderful woman. You'd better not let her down, Fred!"Ariana was polite and responded warmly to everything Mom said. She smiled the whole time, too. She even jumped in to help when Mom cooked.I couldn't help thinking back to the first time I'd brought Sandra to my hometown. Her expression had gone stiff the moment she'd seen the modest, outdated living conditions, and her every move had dripped with disdain. When Mom cooked, she'd shown no intention of helping. All she'd done was watch with cold detachment.Later, when Mom got overwhelmed and asked Sandra t

The onlookers immediately turned on Sandra as they watched the drama unfold."How do you screw up the ring size for a proposal?""No wonder the guy said no. I wouldn't accept it, either! Who could, when she's so careless?"I took off the diamond ring and tossed it to Sandra. "This is in Lester's size, right? It looks like he needs it more than I do. Give it to him."Sandra ran after me frantically. "Fred, wait! I'm sorry. I made a mistake! I can have a new one custom-made for you! Don't go, please! I'll do anything as long as you'll forgive me!"I stopped and looked at her coldly. "Is that so? Then do me a favor and stop clinging to me. Please disappear from my world!"Sandra shook her head, tears welling in her eyes again. "Don't be so cruel to me, please. That's the one thing I can't do…"She stepped toward me while sobbing.I'd had enough. I pulled out my phone, ready to call the cops. "These past few days, your relentless pestering has seriously affected my life. I'm callin

"Are you two… Fred, answer me!" Sandra cried.I couldn't be bothered to respond and turned to leave, but she clung to me tightly."I thought I was the one in the wrong, but it turns out you're the one who changed! I'm your fiancee. I even bought a diamond ring to propose to you. How could you do this to me?" she screeched. In an instant, the people around us started to lap up the drama. They assumed I was the scumbag; they cursed me for being cold, shameless, and a heartless player."Man, society's going downhill. He's got a fiancee, and he's messing around with another woman. What a jerk!""He's a total scumbag. The woman's love is wasted on him!"As the crowd piled on, Sandra just watched, never once trying to shut them down. She was clearly venting her anger. She kept saying that she loved me, but this was who she really was.I knew very well that she was waiting for me to apologize to her and coax her like I used to. Too bad she was going to be disappointed. I wasn't the sam

"I'm fine, but you… That has to hurt, right?" Ariana asked.I smiled. "I'm thick-skinned. It's no big deal. It's a good thing your face didn't get hurt. I'd feel awful if you ended up disfigured."Ariana blushed; even her ears became a suspicious shade of red.An ugly look crept onto Sandra's face. She'd been completely left out while Ariana and I chatted and laughed. She snapped, "Your tenderness belongs to me, Fred. I won't let you be gentle to other women!"With that, she rushed over again, trying to pull us apart. Her repeated outbursts finally enraged the other moviegoers around us. They had watched the whole thing, and her voice had been interrupting them. At this point, they'd had enough and started complaining."Seriously? Can you knock it off? The guy already has a girlfriend, so let go. Why cling to him like that?""Yeah, you're acting like a crazy person! You can't compare to his current girlfriend at all, and you're slandering her, making her out to be some horrible

Sandra trembled in rage, feeling stung by my retort. Her face turned steely, then pale. She kept oscillating between the two."You're mine. I won't let you be with anyone else!" In a fit of rage, she lunged forward to tear me and Ariana apart. However, Ariana reached out and shoved her aside. "The way you cling to Fred is so shrew-like, you know. Honestly, it's ugly. Fred is my man now; you broke his heart back then by not cherishing him. But don't worry, because from now on, I'll give him all the love you never did!"Sandra seethed. She shot Ariana a vicious glare and screeched, "Whatever happened between us is none of your business! Who do you think you are? You're just the other woman who barged into our relationship!"This is all your fault, you homewrecker! If it weren't for you, Fred would never treat me like this. You must've cast a spell on him or something! I'll ruin your face now so you can't seduce anyone anymore!"With that, she lunged, her fingers slashing toward Aria
