The secretary's panicked voice was still fuzzing over the desk speaker when Banjo slammed his fist down onto the desk. The sharp crack echoed off the glass walls like a gunshot.

"Silence that damned line!" he roared, his chest heaving, his eyes bloodshot and wide with absolute rage.

The speaker clicked off, plunging the penthouse office into a heavy, suffocating quiet.

Banjo stood slowly, the triumphant smirk he had worn moments ago was completely gone, replaced by a cold, murderous fury.

"What did you do?" he shouted. "What kind of cheap, illegal maneuver did you just pull, Merinda?"

I stood my ground, my hands resting naturally at my sides. "I didn't pull a maneuver, Banjo," I said, my voice quiet, steady, and clear as crystal. "I simply exercised my rights as the true owner. St. Judes does not belong to you. It never belonged to Vance Enterprises. My mother built that sanctuary with her own family’s wealth before she died. She laid those stones. She planted those trees. I would rather watch that coastline crumble into the ocean than see you turn her legacy into a playground for Tahlia."

"Your mother's legacy?" he hissed, leaning down until his eyes meant mine. "Your mother died penniless because your father was a failed, disgraced fraud who couldn't manage his own accounts! The only reason you even have a roof over your head, the only reason you aren't begging on the streets of Sydney, is because my family stepped in and cleaned up your family's pathetic, miserable mess!"

Every word hit my chest like a jagged shard of ice. He knew how much I loved my mother. He knew how her memory was the only sacred thing I had left in this world, and he was intentionally using it to break me, to grind my dignity into dust.

"My mother was a woman of honor," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts, a raw, burning sting behind my eyes. "Something you and your family will never understand."

"Honor doesn't pay debts, Merinda!" Banjo snapped, his hand shooting out to grab my upper arm in an iron tight, suffocating grip. He didn't shake me, but the sheer force of his hold communicated the absolute authority he believed he held over my life. "You think you're clever? You think hiding behind some offshore banking trick is going to save you from me?"

He leaned closer, his warm breath fanning across my pale skin, his voice dropping into a dark whisper that sent a cold shudder running down my spine.

"Let me remind you of Section 14 in our marriage agreement," Banjo murmured, his eyes locking onto mine with a sickening, triumphant arrogance. "The cross collateralization clause.".

"You remember it, don't you?" Banjo continued, his lips curving into a slow, cruel smile as he saw the terror flicker across my face. "If you commit a material breach of contract if you refuse a legitimate financial request that threatens the stability of the Vance family holdings I have the legal right to liquidate the secondary guarantor assets."

"No" I choked out, trying to pull my arm from his grip, but he held me fast. "No, Banjo, you wouldn't"

"Your uncle Thomas," Banjo whispered softly, mocking my distress. "Your cousin Clara. They still live in Melbourne, don't they? Running that small, fragile shipping logistics firm your father left them? The firm that relies entirely on Vance credit lines to stay operational?"

A tear finally broke free, "Leave them out of this. They have nothing to do with us! They don't even know about the syndicate!"

"They have everything to do with this," Banjo growled, his grip tightening until my bone ached. "If you do not sign a full, unconditional release for St. Judes by six o'clock tonight, I will execute the breach clause. I will pull their credit lines before the banks close today. I will freeze their commercial assets, seize their inventory, and drag every remaining member of your bloodline into complete, irreversible financial ruin. They will be bankrupt, homeless, and disgraced before the week is over."

He released my arm, stepping back to adjust the cuffs of his dark suit jacket.

"You have six hours, Merinda," he said, his voice flat, emotionless, and completely closed off. "Save your dead mother's dirt, or save your living family. Make your choice."

I stood there, gasping for air, clutching my bruised arm where his fingers had dug in. My whole body was shaking. The cruel, ruthless reality of his threat hung in the quiet room like a rope tightening around my neck. He knew I couldn't let my uncle and cousin suffer for my pride. He knew they were innocent bystanders in this war.

Suddenly, before I could utter another word, the doors of the penthouse office burst open without a knock.

Jarrah stepped into the room.

His face was deathly pale, his hands trembling as he held a secure, encrypted satellite phone. He didn't even acknowledge my presence. He walked straight past me, his eyes wide with a strange, uncharacteristic panic as he looked at Banjo.

"Master Banjo," Jarrah gasped out, his voice shaking violently. "You need to look at the main trading monitor immediately."

Banjo frowned, his brow furrowing with irritation. "What is it, Jarrah? I'm in the middle of"

"It's the Vance family trust, sir!" Jarrah interrupted, his voice rising into a sharp, desperate pitch. "The private vault in Zurich the master access code was just changed from the inside! Someone is executing a complete, hostile takeover of Vance Enterprises right now!"

Banjo froze, his face draining of all color as he slowly turned his head to look at me.

Baden The view from the top floor of the Lawson Tower overlooked the entire glowing grid of Zurich.Rain lashed against the floor to ceiling glass, blurring the distant lights of the city into soft, bleeding pools of gold and red. I stood in the dark office, a crystal glass of neat scotch resting in my right hand, listening to the soft, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.Down on the streets below, Banjo Vance's world was tearing itself apart at the seams.I took a slow sip of the amber liquid, feeling the sharp burn settle in my throat. For three long years, I had watched Banjo parade around Europe like a untouchable king, hiding his pathetic little marriage behind legal non-disclosure agreements while his father's company slowly ran out of real liquidity. He thought he was brilliant. He thought that by burying Merinda Kael in his shadow, he had successfully erased the debt his family owed to her dead father. He had no idea that every single move he made was bei

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Setting The Board

KaelThe leather seat of the limousine barely registered the cold against my fingertips before the sound of the engine wrapped around me like an embrace I hadn't felt in three years.Outside the rain slicked window, the neon lights of Zurich stretched out in streaks of red and yellow. Up on the hill, the shadow of Banjo's penthouse tower was speeding into the low storm clouds. He was probably still standing in that police basement, clutching the signed divorce papers while his corporate bank accounts bled dry.I didn't feel triumph. In fact, I'd expected an immense emptiness in the center of my chest, the weight of three wasted years and bruises that hadn't healed, and the bitter taste of the fact that to defeat a monster, I had to stop pretending to be a victim. The silver haired man sitting across from me, my father's most trusted advisor before the syndicate fell apart, silently reached forward. He placed a small black satchel on the table between us.Inside he'd placed a satellite

KaelThe red alert on the constable's tablet flashed over and over, painting the concrete room in a harsh, bleeding light.Emergency override verified: Tahlia Thorne Alias.Jarrah didn't say another word. His composure was gone, replaced by a pale, twitching silence as he backed away toward the open door, his fingers digging into his palms before he turned and vanished down the corridor. He didn't even check to see if I was following him. His careful trap was already turning into ash beneath his feet.Footsteps thundered outside, heavy and unsteady, until Banjo burst through the threshold. He looked undone. His tie was completely torn away, his white shirt unbuttoned at the neck, revealing the ragged rise and fall of his chest. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with a chaotic mixture of panic and disbelief. The phone in his hand was buzzing constantly, displaying dozens of missed calls from the central reserve board, but he ignored it.He stared at me, then at the constable's ta

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Jarrah's Advice

KaelThe door of the private holding room clicked shut with a sharp ring. The high magistrate’s lawyer and the federal marshals had stepped out into the hallway to complete the clearance protocols but Banjo was no longer in the room. He had been practically dragged out moments earlier by his own frantic legal team after his phone blew up with urgent alerts from the Vance Enterprises emergency board.I was not alone, though.Standing near the corner of the room was Jarrah, he didn't look like a man whose conspirator had just been detained at the airport. His posture was as straight and immaculate as it had been during his thirty years of service to the Vance family. His face was a mask of perfect, icy calm, though a dark, calculating intelligence gleamed deep within his eyes."You played a dangerous card today, Miss Merinda," Jarrah said, his voice smooth, soft, and entirely devoid of his usual servant's deference.I turned my head slowly, looking at him from where I sat from. "You're

KaelA single bulb lit up the room, giving it that airy interrogating room. I sat on a hard bench, my hands resting in my lap. The handcuffs had been removed, but the red, marks on my wrists remained as a constant reminder of how I had been dragged out of the Vance estate like a common thief. The door unlocked, I didn't lift my head right away. I watched the rain dripping from the hem of my coat onto the floorboards.Banjo stepped inside. He didn't have his security team with him this time. He was alone. His face looked hollowed out the sharp edges of his jaw tighter than usual, his eyes bloodshot and shadowed by dark circles under his eyes.He didn't sit down in the chair across from me. He stood beside the table, resting one hand on the cold desk, looking down at me with a mix of icy detachment and a strange, flickering exhaustion."You look remarkably calm for someone facing twenty years in a Swiss federal prison, Merinda," he said, his voice rough, dry, and flat.I slowly raised m

KaelBaden Lawson’s voice faded into silence as Banjo ended the call, sliding the phone into his pocket. I watched him, he looked absolutely shocked with a hint of anger as he looked up at me."His secret partner," Banjo murmured, still in a daze, the words coming out in a low, shallow tone. "He was talking about your father's old contacts, wasn't he? You didn't do this alone. You brought your family's rot straight into my house.""Listen to yourself, Banjo," I shouted, my throat tight as I forced myself to stand up my legs were trembling, but I refused to stay seated while he looked down at me like a disgraced criminal. "Look at the paper in your hand. Look at the digital trail you're so eager to believe.""The trail is clean," he spat. "It leads straight to this room. Straight to your device.""It's too clean!" I stepped toward him, pointing at the scattered sheets on the bed. "Look at the timestamps on those bank transfers! Eight fifteen AM yesterday. The email sent to Baden Lawson
