Chapter 1

The Invisible Wife

Kael’s POV

The silence in the Vance estate didn’t just fill the rooms; it weighed down on them.

I sat on the edge of the velvet sofa in the main parlor, holding a teacup that had gone cold hours ago. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the icy autumn rain swept off Lake Zurich, smearing the lights of the city into blurry, fading streaks. It was midnight. The grandfather clock in the foyer clocked twelve slow, heavy beats, each one vibrating right through my ribs.

Three years ago today, I signed my name on a piece of paper and became the secret wife of Banjo Vance.

To the rest of Switzerland and the global financial media Banjo was the untouched king of high finance, a striking, ruthless billionaire who ruled Vance Enterprises with an iron hand. To them, I was just a ghost, an inconvenient rumor, or worse; a shameless gold-digger who somehow trapped him into a legal arrangement.

Nobody knew the real terms. Nobody knew why I was truly in this house, or the weight of the secret I carried beneath my silence.

I lifted the cup to my lips, but the bitter, cold black tea made my throat tighten. I set it back down on the glass table with a quiet clink. My fingers were trembling, not from the chill in the air, but from the hollow ache inside my chest that had been growing every single day of this marriage.

The heavy oak front doors clicked open.

Footsteps echoed in the marble floor slowly, steady, and unhurried. Banjo was home, there were times when I still hoped he might look at me with something resembling warmth. I stood up, smoothing down the front of my simple black dress. I had spent two hours getting ready for tonight. I had baked his favorite dessert, set a dinner table for two, and waited.

When Banjo walked into the parlor, the air in the room instantly shifted.

He was towering, broad-shouldered, and striking enough to stop anyone’s breath. His dark designer suit fitting his broad frame perfectly but his amber eyes were hard, cold, exhausted and then, before he even spoke a word, the scent hit me.

It wasn't his usual sharp sandalwood cologne. Overpowering the air around him was the sweet, heavy, suffocating scent of damask roses, Tahlia’s signature perfume.

My stomach twisted, a sudden sharp pain striking right behind my abdomen. I swallowed hard, forcing my posture to remain straight, my chin lifted. I couldn't break down. Not in front of him.

"You're awake," Banjo said. His voice was low, completely empty of emotion. He didn't look at my face. Instead, he unbuttoned his suit jacket, tossing it carelessly over the back of an armchair.

"I waited for you," I said softly, my voice barely cutting through the silence of the room. "You said you would try to be home early tonight."

Banjo paused, his long fingers unfastening his gold cuff links. He let out a short, tired breath that sounded dangerously close to annoyance. "Work ran late, Merinda. The European summit prep is taking up all my time. You know this."

"Work?" I echoed quietly.

I took two steps toward him, stopping just outside his personal space. Up close, I could see the stray smudge of faint pink powder near his arm. The rose scent was so thick it made my eyes sting.

"Was it work, Banjo? Or was it Tahlia?"

His eyes snapped to mine, sharp and defensive. The temperature in the room decreased. "Do not start this tonight. Tahlia had a severe panic attack around eight. Her breathing condition flared up because of the cold weather. She was terrified, alone in her apartment, and she called me. I’m not going to apologize for taking care of someone who needs me."

The words cut right through me, sharp as a razor. Tahlia Sterling. His fragile, innocent childhood sweetheart. The woman he openly paraded through Zurich's elite social circles while I was kept hidden away in the shadows like a dirty secret. Whenever Tahlia so much as sneezed, Banjo dropped multi-billion-dollar deals to run to her bedside.

"And what about me?" I whispered, my voice breaking just a fraction before I caught myself. "Do I not need you?"

"You are a grown woman, Merinda," he said coldly, stepping past me toward the private bar in the corner. He poured two fingers of scotch into a glass, not offering me a drop. "You have this entire house. You have a black card with no limit. You lack absolutely nothing. Stop acting so dramatic."

I turned around to face his back. "It's November 14th, Banjo."

He took a slow sip of his drink, his back turned to me. "What about it?"

My breath hitched. A heavy, suffocating tightness gripped my lungs. I looked at his broad shoulders, waiting, hoping, praying against my own common sense that he would catch himself. That he would remember.

"It's our third wedding anniversary," I said.

The room fell dead silent. The only sound was the rain lashing furiously against the windowpanes.

Banjo didn't freeze. He didn't drop his glass. He simply took another calm, measured sip of his scotch, turned around, and leaned back against the mahogany bar. His amber eyes held no guilt, no realization, no remorse. Just a profound, heavy indifference.

"Is that what this is about?" he asked softly, almost mockingly. "A date on a calendar?"

"Three years, Banjo," I said, stepping closer, my hands clenching into tight fists at my sides to hide their shaking. "Three years of sitting in this house alone. Three years of reading news articles about you and Tahlia at galas while I stay invisible. Three years of being treated like a parasite who tricked you into marriage. I have given you three years of my life, and you couldn't even remember the day?"

Banjo set his glass down on the counter with a sharp, heavy thump. The annoyance in his face hardened into sheer disdain.

"You signed a contract, Merinda," he spat out, his tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Let’s not rewrite history here. You came into this marriage knowing exactly what it was. You got the protection, the security, and the Vance name. I paid your family’s debts. Don’t stand there now and pretend you expected romance. We are business partners bound by paper, nothing more."

"Business partners," I repeated, the words tasting like copper and ash in my mouth.

"Yes," he said, walking straight toward me. He stopped mere inches away, towering over me, his shadow completely swallowing mine. "Tahlia is fragile. She has been fragile since we were kids, and she actually cares about me. You? You took a deal. So don't compare yourself to her. Don't ever demand what belongs to her."

He looked down at me, his eyes sweeping over my dress, my hair, the effort I had poured into tonight, with complete coldness. Without another word, he brushed past my shoulder, walking toward the grand staircase.

"I'm sleeping in the east wing," he added casually over his shoulder, not even pausing his stride. "Clean up the parlor before the staff arrives in the morning."

I stood frozen in the center of the vast, empty room.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably now. The tears I had fought so hard to hold back finally burned their way down my cheeks, hot and bitter against my cold skin. I turned to look at the dining table in the adjacent room. The candles had burned down to sad wax stubs, the food completely cold.

He didn't care. He had never cared. To him, I was just a nameless gold-digger who traded her freedom for his money. He had no idea who I really was. He had no idea about the Kael name, the international banking legacy running through my veins, or the power I was keeping dormant just to play the dutiful, quiet wife for him.

I had endured three years of hell because I thought, somewhere deep down inside that frozen heart of his, there was a man worth saving.

I was wrong.

Suddenly, the silent house was shattered by a sharp, high-pitched ring.

It wasn't my phone. It was Banjo’s secondary secure line the one he left charging on the side table near the foyer entrance. He must have forgotten it in his rush to get away from me.

The screen flashed bright blue in the dim light.

I walked over slowly, my heart pounding a strange, erratic rhythm against my ribs. I glanced toward the stairs. Up above, the light in the east wing turned on. He was already in his room.

I looked down at the glowing screen.

It wasn't a call. It was an encrypted pop-up notification from Vance Enterprises' private internal server, linked directly to Banjo's executive account.

My eyes scanned the preview text on the locked screen, and instantly, every drop of warmth left my body.

[CRITICAL ALERT: PROPERTY ANNEXATION INITIATED]

[TARGET: KAEL ANCESTRAL COASTAL ESTATE - AUSTRALIA]

[STATUS: DRAFTING DIVORCE SETTLEMENT REQUIREMENT FOR MERINDA KAEL]

[RECIPIENT DESIGNATED: TAHLIA STERLING]

My breath locked in my throat.

He wasn't just ignoring our anniversary. He was already planning to strip me of the only thing I had left in this world, my family's legacy, to hand it over to Tahlia.

Before I could process the sudden strike of ice in my veins, the phone in my own dress pocket vibrated twice.

I pulled out my secure, unlisted phone with a trembling hand. A text message sat on the screen from an encrypted Swiss number.

Handler Kael: The offshore accounts are fully prepped. Your three-year commitment to the contract expires in forty-eight hours. Say the word, CEO Kael, and we trigger Phase One. It’s time to come home.

I looked up at the quiet, dark stairs leading to Banjo’s bedroom, then back down at the two phones in my hands. The tear tracking down my cheek dried in the cold draft of the room.

The heartbreak didn't disappear, but beneath it, something ancient, dangerous, and long-buried finally woke up.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand, my sapphire eyes hardening into ice.

He wanted a business transaction? He wanted to take my land for Tahlia?

I tapped the screen of my phone and typed a single, cold line back to my handler.

Execute Phase One. Let him sign the papers.
