Chapter 4

Author: Wendy Gill
It was the same first-aid kit that I had prepared for Caleb a long time ago. He tended to accidentally hurt himself, so I prepared a first-aid kit for him and stocked it with items he would regularly use.

As expected, Caleb was stunned. His eyes were crazed and obsessed when he looked at the wooden doll in front of him. "Did you come back, Lena?" he asked.

His question went unanswered, no matter how long he waited. The corner of his mouth twitched, and he barked out a self-deprecating laugh. "I really must have gone insane. I really thought your soul entered the doll."

The system sounded elated as it gave its next report. "Ms. Rockworth, the timing for the soul-summoning ritual has passed. Even if Mr. Finley wants to slice his wrists and sacrifice his blood, he'll have to wait until next year."

I looked at Caleb. He had thrown the carving knife aside in favor of kneeling to grab the bandages in the first-aid kit, wrapping them around his wrist. I breathed out a sigh of relief, but I couldn't help the pain that gripped my heart when I took in his pale complexion.

"Don't tell me that Caleb has tried to sacrifice his blood every year since I left?"

"Correct. But he never cut himself so deeply in the past. It is likely that he truly wanted to sacrifice his life at that moment earlier."

I fell silent as the regret brewing within me intensified while the system removed the screen. My gaze returned to Arthur, who had curled up into a ball. He was still grabbing my hand tightly as if he were afraid I would leave.

I could feel my heart softening once more. It was hard to believe that he was my child and Caleb's. He looked a lot like Caleb, but he also looked a lot like me. I couldn't help but smile.

Arthur suddenly jolted awake when the sun was setting.

I gently wiped away the sweat beading on his forehead. As I took in his face that had turned as white as a sheet, I asked, "Did you have a nightmare?"

Arthur's eyes reddened in an instant when he looked at me. He then threw himself headfirst into my embrace. "It really is you, Mommy. You really came back, and you didn't leave. I dreamed that the madman had everyone who looked like you killed."

He was trembling slightly in my arms as he spat the words out through clenched teeth, "Not only is that man insane, but he's also blind. He might not be able to recognize you like me. He might assume you're like the others and have you killed."

His eyes were filled with loathing and repulsion at the mention of Caleb. I truly didn't understand how their relationship had deteriorated so badly when Caleb was the one who raised Arthur. I was about to ask Arthur for more details when he leaped off the bed and pinned me with a serious look.

"He's sick in the head, Mommy. I know you must have left because you hated him. I'm very normal, so why don't you take me away with you? I know how to earn money, and I know how to do chores too!"

He rummaged through his bag and pulled out several cards before pressing them into my hands. "There's a total of ten million dollars in these cards. It's not much, but I can work hard to earn more and take care of you for the rest of your life."

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry as I held the cards. Instead, I asked, "Arthur, why do you hate your father so much? Why would you speak ill of him?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately. He pulled me closer with his warm and tiny hands before whispering, "I'll answer your questions after we leave, okay, Mommy?"

My heart completely melted as I looked into his pleading eyes. "Okay. I'll do as you wish. Let's go."

Joy flickered in Arthur's eyes. He grabbed my hand and dragged me outside. "Don't worry, Mommy. I'll help you escape, and I'll protect you forever. You—"

He ran into a tall and solid body before he could finish his sentence.

Meanwhile, my expression twisted as my feet froze in place. Caleb's lips were curled upward slightly as he stared at me. He was carrying himself with a charming demeanor, but there was also a strange sense of danger in the air around him.

"You'd rather run away with him than stay for me, Lena? Do you really want to abandon me for the second time so badly?"

I couldn't be sure if Caleb had been feeling nostalgic, or if he tried to trick himself into thinking I was still by his side by renovating the interior of the villa to look exactly like the old one. The room with the best view had also been left vacant. "I left it for you," Caleb explained softly. "I also renovated the room according to your preferences, because I had a feeling you would come back."Feeling a little upset, I replied, "Thank you for waiting for me for so long."Before we turned in for the night, Caleb and Arthur argued over who would sleep with me. Still feeling regretful, I helplessly agreed to sleep with both of them.Although it was already midnight, I continued to toss and turn as I was sandwiched between them. My heart felt like it had been submerged in a pot of honey and was struggling with all its might to escape the sticky trap.I had never experienced such affection before, which made me greedy for it. However, the more affection I was showered with, the

I didn't know which drink to try first as I looked at the dozens of beverages placed on the table. Caleb glanced at Arthur before increasing the speed at which he piled more food on my plate. Not wanting to be outdone, Arthur also quickened his speed of pouring more drinks for me.It didn't take long before I had a mountain of food in front of me. The entire table was also covered with drinks. I placed down my utensils before speechlessly chasing them out of the booth."If you're done eating and have nothing else better to do, go run two laps outside the restaurant."Noticing my displeasure, both Caleb and Arthur hung their heads before leaving without a word.Silence was finally restored to the booth. As I began to dig into the food, the system suddenly spoke up."Are you there, Ms. Rockworth? I have news for you, although I am unsure if it's good or bad news.""Go ahead," I replied with a hum."I measured Mr. Finley's emotions. It has stabilized for now, but it might fluctuate

"But she didn't want you six years ago," Arthur retorted. His words cut Caleb deeply. A glacial storm raged in his darkened eyes as he hissed, "Would you like to repeat that one more time?"Realizing that the situation was quickly spiraling out of control, I covered Arthur's mouth and scolded, "That's enough. Keep your mouths shut, both of you."I separated them, giving them time to calm down. Only then did the tense atmosphere in the ward slowly dissipate.I blew on the tea to cool it down before taking a sip. From the corner of my eye, I could see Arthur glancing at me. I put down the cup and said, "Go ahead. Tell me why you hate your father so much."Arthur gritted his teeth. "You're being tricked by his current appearance, Mommy. The truth is, he hates you, and he hates me, too. "I heard him say with my own ears about how he hated your face. He also choked me and said he was going to kill me sooner or later because I was related to you. He was going to kill you, too!"Every

I knew that the wound was no accident. Caleb had clearly cut himself for whatever ritual he was trying to do that involved sacrificing his blood. I suddenly became furious after listening to his nonchalant tone."Why don't you care about your own well-being, Caleb?"Caleb's body stiffened, clearly not expecting me to get so angry. He chuckled before asking, "Are you worried about me, Helena?""Of course. Don't tell me that you forgot how to cherish yourself just because I wasn't by your side, Caleb."I scolded him indignantly, but I was stunned when I made eye contact with him. Caleb's eyes had reddened, and there was a ghost of a smile playing on his lips."You were so heartless when you left back then. I thought you didn't care about me anymore."His words rendered me speechless. Finally, I said dryly, "I never said I didn't care about you."I rose to my feet and searched the ward for bandages before wrapping his wrist with them. Afraid that he would remove them again, I made

Caleb had lost a lot of weight, which made him look even colder and nobler. His calm gaze swept over Arthur before finally settling on my face. "Helena Rockworth, can we talk?"Arthur was quivering all over from Caleb's gaze. However, he still gritted his teeth and moved to stand before me, staring at Caleb with wary eyes. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. I'm warning you. Don't you dare hurt her."Feeling guilty, I avoided Caleb's eyes. When it came down to it, no matter if it was in the past or in the present, Caleb had never once betrayed me while I let him down time and time again, making the guilt in my heart grow stronger. The tension in the air was palpable. The system suddenly appeared and reported to me, "Ms. Rockworth, I just received news from headquarters. Your mission will be considered completed as long as Mr. Finley's emotions stabilize. It's a good opportunity for you to calm him down if you talk to him."I nodded in agreement before looking at Caleb. "Al
