LOGINEsperanza sat silently, gazing at her lap while Diego drove. The warm feeling from their date still lingered between them, but they chose silence over any other awkward encounter.
The quiet ride continued until the sudden ring of Esperanza's phone broke the peace. "Hey, it's me. I'm very sorry for calling you in the middle of an amazing evening, but I'm in the middle of a bloody crisis, and I don't have anything at home to control it, nor can I go outside. It's freaking bad!" Valentina, yelled from the other end. "Is it that bad?" Esperanza asked, clutching her phone tightly. "Yeah," Valentina sobbed. "Don't worry, I'm on my way. I'll get everything," Esperanza comforted her and disconnected the call. Her gaze went to Diego whose eyes were constantly moving towards her, slightly worrying about her. "Is everything okay?" Diego politely asked. "Yeah... It's just... Can you drop me off at the mall? I need to go there urgently," Esperanza asked with nervousness pooling in her eyes. "Sure. I'll wait for you to get done with whatever grabbed your attention and then drop you off at your place." Though Carlos faked his love for Esperanza multiple times by waiting for her for hours in a nail salon, she still found something trusting in the words that came out of Diego's mouth. But she couldn't risk anything after just one evening. Not when trusting men is not even the last thing on her list. Esperanza shook her head, "No, I'll be fine. Anyway, I have to go to my friend's place from there, so you can just drop me off at the mall." Diego restrained the unknown emotions that crossed through his heart with a curt nod. He wanted to be with her a little longer but he respected her wishes more. She already looked fragile to him, he couldn't risk pushing her any further. Dropping her off at the mall, they bid their goodbyes, a small smile playing on their lips. "I hope I'll see you soon," Diego smiled. "You bet. After all, I'm your employee," Esperanza politely answered. She walked inside the mall while Diego watched her carefully disappear in the buzzing crowd. Inside the mall, Esperanza shops calmly for Valentina's necessities until she freezes. There they stood; Juliana and her stepsister Evangelina, laughing loudly as if they owned every single thing in the world. Seeing them together instantly brought back all the pain and memories; the hospital room, the stabbing betrayal, and the brief memory of the child they took from her. Her hands instantly started to shake, her heart raced like there was some marathon. She needed to leave. Immediately. She tries to leave unnoticed, but Evangelina spots her. "Hermana!" she calls out with fake sweetness. Evangelina approaches with her usual false concern, but the evil glimmer in her eyes spilled the whole truth. "You shouldn't have left home, Esperanza. I tried to warn you about Carlos, but you wouldn't listen." She spoke loudly enough for nearby shoppers to hear, painting herself as the caring sister and Esperanza as the stubborn one who destroyed the family over a man. Unapologetic for her cruelty towards a mother, Juliana stepped forward, openly showing her harsh, cruel hatred for Esperanza, "Look who we have here, the woman who tried to steal my man and my child." This was it. Juliana's one statement replaced the anxiety with fury and Esperanza found herself losing the control of the last string she was holding onto. "Your child? The child I carried for nine months? The one I gave birth to and didn’t get to hold because you snatched him away? The one you didn't want to birth because you didn't want to ruin this perfect... Surgery figure!" Esperanza's voiced, her voice was heavy and barely in her control. "Oh, yes. Thank you so much for being such a perfect little incubator, Esperanza. But the boy belongs with his real family now; with his father and me," Juliana says with venomous satisfaction, a mocking smirk playing on her lips that'll never leave its scar from Esperanza's mind. The crowd of shoppers begins to whisper, some recognising the scandal, some whispering the false story that Juliana and Carlos spread in front of the world. Evangelina faked a long sigh, showing sympathy for Esperanza which was never actually there, "Poor Esperanza, she never got over losing Carlos. She must have been so unstable since then." Esperanza listened to every cruel word, every lie designed to humiliate her publicly. Nothing was new for her; she knew how Carlos always covered up his mistakes, this was a sin that he would never want to come in front of the world. She knew this would happen, but what hurt her more was that people judged her with a one-sided story, nobody asked her why or what happened; she was declared evil without ever being heard. Shutting her eyes hard and leaving the whispering judgements behind, Esperanza spoke with deadly calm, "Stop calling me hermana, Evangelina. I am not your sister. I haven't been since the day you all sold me to your highest bidder." Evangelina knew she hit Esperanza right where she wanted to but she wanted a show for the crowd that they would remember for days. She reached for Esperanza's arm in a show of concern, but Esperanza stepped back sharply. Evangelina stumbled and fell dramatically, immediately crying out as if she had been attacked. "See how violent she's become?" Evangelina wails, while Juliana rushes to help her, "This is what jealousy does to people!" The crowd turned against Esperanza, murmuring about her cruelty to her own sister, and started calling her names. Juliana looked up at her with pure hatred and spat, "You deserve nothing good in this life, Esperanza. Nothing but suffering and death." She raised her hand in the air to hit Esperanza, but it was caught in the middle, and instantly with a firm hold, she was taken back by someone. "Keep your hands to yourself, Ms... Juliana Vasquez. I'll not remind you of the same thing again," Diego said, looking dead straight in Juliana's eyes. "Oh, my God. Is it the famous Diego Alejandro Rowland?" Some girl from the crowd screeched. While Evangelina and Julian's mouths dropped to the floor, Diego paid no attention to them and gazed at Esperanza, "Got what you were looking for?" Shocked, sad, happy... Esperanza couldn't bring herself to feel any of the emotion. Seeing Diego standing up for her when she thought he had left, shook Esperanza to a state where she couldn't bring herself to form any word. "Esperanza?" Deigo gently called. "Yea-Yeah," She whispered. With a quick, careful motion, Diego took the bag from Esperanza's trembling hand. He then turned a cold, piercing stare on Juliana and Evangelina, delivering a clear message of hostile warning, and immediately escorted Esperanza away.~Diego's POV~ "This time it's taking a very long time..." Jonathan whispered. I nodded. My eyes were still fixed on grandpa. It wasn't safe outside for him so I brought him home. He was still being treated. Surrounded by machines. Daily medications but still... I couldn't say he was healing. His heartbeat rises whenever he starts to talk. His breaths become shaky, making it impossible for him to form any word. I don't know what was wrong with him but this never happened before. He had injuries earlier as well due to his stubbornness to walk on his own but it was never this bad. Even two days of constant treatment couldn't improve his condition a bit. My phone beeped with a notification and for some reason, my fingers started to shake. It was his medical reports. I asked the doctors to run a full-body checkup, and now the partial report is here. I opened the report... Damn it! What the hell? How? And when did this happen? "What's w
~Esperanza's POV~ 'It's not a demand... Just an ask because I can see what you both can't...' 'You both lean towards each other without falling… and stand without pushing the other down.” 'Some people don’t need promises. They need someone who stays.' 'I know you’ll make a great team because neither of you needs to be carried. You both only need love, care, and support.' 'And don't think I asked you for this because of my love for him. It’s about the fact that I truly, deeply want to see both of you find peace together. Home together.' His words were still ringing in my ears. I wanted to forget it all but I couldn't. I was still in the hospital, and Diego was once again pacing in the hallway. Mr Rowland wasn't supposed to talk that much. His nerves needed rest. Not too intense talk. He passed out again. His heartbeats rose as if he were fighting a battle within, and his breath became shaky. The doctors were still checking up on him while we waited outside
~Esperanza's POV~ I've always seen Diego calm and composed but these couple of days were forcing him to face storms. And I feel pathetic about this. He has been so swamped with my struggles that he forgot he had someone to take care of. I was alone, but he wasn't. He was supposed to be there for his grandpa but he was with me. Walking every step, crossing every hurdle as if it were his own, and... Taking care of me as if nothing else mattered. If I hadn’t been so engrossed with myself, maybe his grandpa would still be fine. I gazed at him. His hands clutched the steering so tightly that his knuckles turned white. It looked like he wanted to suck the life out of the steering wheel. His jaw was tight. Fighting a battle that he didn’t want to talk out loud. Our car almost reached a hundred miles per hour. My heart was pounding in my chest while my breath was heavy. I was scared but I didn't dare to say a word. It was a Sunday. But he was with me. I h
~Third Person's POV~ "Hermana! It's so good to see you back," Evangelina sweetly echoed. But everyone knew how much hatred she carried for Esperanza. "What are you doing here? I told you not to set foot in here if you left..." Don Ricardo said, eyes blazing and watching Esperanza’s every step. But Esperanza didn't bother to answer him. She knew that every person's eyes were watching her every step; she wanted to shake them the same way they had shaken her when she was eight. Her eyes were fixed on the big red chair, placed on the right side of the living room. "Esperanza, girl, what are you doing?" Claudia, her stepmother, carefully asked. "The same thing that you did..." Esperanza smiled and sat on the big red chair. "Sixteen years ago..." Everyone's eyes widened in shock. A surge of rage passed through their vein, yet they remained calm except for Don Ricardo. "Esperanza! That's your mother's place!" He yelled. Esperanza crossed her legs, and a smirk pl
~Third Person's POV~ "God, Diego. You already made me change twice. Do I still not look good?" Esperanza asked, her voice mirroring the stress evident on her face. "I think you want me to have a look in your closet," Diego hummed. "What? No!" Esperanza loudly exclaimed. Diego stood from his place. His walk was slow and calm. His conscious steps made Esperanza’s heart skip a beat. He wore a sky-blue shirt tucked into white tailored pants. As he walked towards her with slow, steady steps, his arms swung naturally, showing the strength in his muscles beneath his sleeves. Esperanza's heart raced as she watched him come closer. Every slow step he took made her mind go blank, replacing the normal heartbeats with nervous beats in her chest. She couldn't look away. She only found herself wondering if he could hear how fast her heart was beating. He softly placed his hands on her shoulders and looked in her brown orbs, "You're not going there as Esperanza Ricardo, the
~Esperanza's POV~ I tried a lot... I'm still trying, and I know I'll keep trying, but this feeling... It feels like my body has registered his touch. I want to shake it off. I want to forget how... How good his touch felt, but... No. I promised myself I won't fall for anyone again. I can't let Diego's few thoughts mess with me again. But I can't deny that I liked his touch. It didn't feel alarming, annoying, or creepy. Just pure concern and safety. That's how I feel when I'm around him. And I don't want to feel that. If anybody heard my thoughts, they would laugh at me. But this is the truth. These were the only feelings I was surrounded by when I was with Carlos. My naive ass thought it was love, but it wasn't. He was concerned because I was carrying our baby, and that's why he wanted me to stay safe till I gave birth. Everyone wants a partner who makes them feel safe, but Carlos's 'too much' security has given me doubts. I not only want
