Chapter Seven

All I had to do was get through the next few weeks, keep on top of my chores and hide in my room until it was my time to face Alpha Reynolds. He had not hidden anything from me, quite the opposite, he had walked into the dining room I was cleaning and dragged me up in front of the Patrollers, who congregated there while waiting to start or end their shifts. The place was packed, as word had got around of what the Alpha intended to do. As usual, I was caught completely off guard when he grabbed my braid and hauled me to my feet, shaking me so hard my teeth rattled. Holding me up in front of his Pack he scowled at me, then turned to them.

'You all know that this lazy, good-for-nothing slave has not shifted yet. In a few weeks, when we hold the Festival of Age, I am going to rectify that.'

He went on to explain in great detail exactly what force shifting entailed. He sneered as he pointed out that I really had no one but myself to blame for this situation; if I had been 'normal' like the rest of his Pack, I would have shifted when I hit puberty as my peers had. Of course, the small fact of my being consistently starved and beaten, which had delayed my puberty, was pushed under the carpet; it was far easier for the Pack to lay the blame at my feet just as they always did.

They actually clapped and cheered him for his speech. Some of them went as far as to slap him on the back when he gave me another hard shake and then tossed me to the floor, leaving me sprawled out, humiliated and winded.

'Get back to work, you useless slave.'

He sneered, turning away and striding back into his office. I gathered my stuff together quickly and slunk out of the dining room. There were other chores I could do that would keep me away from Pack members. I should have known I would not be allowed to finish my last week in peace, as I served lunch in the main hall, hauling huge platters of cooked meats and vegetables onto the long wooden tables in the dining room where the Patrollers were sitting, waiting for their lunch. I could not prevent my stomach from grumbling with hunger.

Morgan, the other Beta’s eldest son, rubbed his groin suggestively, and his friends laughed at his innuendo, egging him on to tease me further. Only it was not the usual kind of hurtful but harmless words; he stood up and approached me, grabbing my long, thick braid in his hand.

‘It’s your eighteenth birthday soon, isn’t it, little slave?’

He demanded, and silence fell around the room as all eyes turned to us.

‘Y, yes.’

I stuttered, knowing it was useless not to answer, as that only got me yet another beating.

He tugged the band from my hair and shook me hard so that my red/gold curls tumbled around me, almost to my hips.

‘Will you look at that?’

He smirked, then, gripping me tightly so I could not struggle, my back to his front, he tugged the top of my shirt down until he had exposed my small breasts; his eyes turning golden as he surveyed my pale, creamy skin and my dark pink nipples. I tried desperately to wriggle out of his grasp, mortified at being seen almost naked by these men, but his grip only tightened on me.

‘Well, now guys, we all know what is in store for her at the coming of age festival next week, so wouldn’t it be an awful waste to let all this be taken from us before we have had a chance to enjoy it?’
