Chapter 2

Author: Tangle H
Everyone on the East Coast knew Adrian and I had broken up.

The fallen Ashfords weren't good enough for the Vances.

But nobody knew the rest of it. The old Don had buried every detail.

The amused looks and the whispers kept pulling at my thoughts.

I got distracted, and I spilled red wine on a guest's couture gown.

The next second, a hand cracked hard across my face.

"What is wrong with you? I bought this dress just for tonight, and you spilled wine all over it."

The woman spat the insults at me.

I lowered my head and apologized. "I'm sorry, ma'am. I can pay to have it cleaned."

That only made her angrier. "Cleaned? This is Valentino couture. The cleaning alone runs ten grand. You got that kind of money?"

"I can write you an IOU for now."

The noise of the party died down. Adrian looked over.

He watched from across the room, cold and detached.

Somebody recognized me, and to score points with the new Don, made a show of laughing. "Well, if it isn't the Don's ex. You two are done, and you're still pulling cheap stunts like this for attention? Don't you know he's marrying into the Whitmore family?"

The woman I'd splashed instantly switched to a fawning smile. "Don, I heard you're getting married next month at St. Mary's? This woman spilled wine on me on purpose. Let me have the manager fire her, throw her off the East Coast, so she doesn't taint your wedding."

The manager had no choice. "If the Vances and the Whitmores want it, I'll cooperate."

Just then a wave of expensive perfume drifted over. Charlotte, at Adrian's side, laid a hand on the woman's arm and smiled gently. "Let it go. Today's the day Adrian and I get engaged. No sense letting a little thing like this embarrass everyone."

She drew a thick stack of cash-filled envelopes from her expensive clutch and handed them to the woman, every movement graceful.

"You've all worked hard tonight. A small token from the Vance family."

Finally she came to me, looked me over with that pitying, condescending gaze, and pressed an envelope into my hand.

"Eve Ashford, isn't it? Adrian's mentioned you."

She sighed, her voice full of reasonable, generous sympathy. "Things must have been rough since you left him. Take the guest gift. A girl should take better care of herself. Adrian's the Don now. You showing up in front of him dressed in rags, people will laugh at him for having bad taste back then."

To perform for the future Donna, the woman I'd splashed yanked a gilt-edged invitation from her bag and flung it in my face.

"Take a good look. He's getting married. And you spill wine on me just to make a scene. You've got nerve."

The card grazed the corner of my eye and dropped into my lap.

I had nothing to say. Head down, I saw Adrian's name printed on the invitation. And beside his name, side by side, was Charlotte's.

Charlotte. Even the name sounded like a well-protected daughter of some noble house.

She must be more sensible than me, I thought, more refined, better at taking care of a man. She'd never keep hurting Adrian, and she'd never be the stone in his path to becoming Don.

Five years apart, and now this. Knowing Adrian was doing well, that was enough.

I held back the tears that almost fell, pressed a hand to my stinging cheek, lifted my head, and said one thing to Adrian. "Congratulations."

Adrian stared straight at me. When he heard it, the corner of his mouth twitched, and he let out a cold little laugh.

He looked at my swollen cheek and spoke flatly. "Eve, stay away from every one of my family's ceremonies. And don't try to worm your way into my wedding by waiting tables."

"Charlotte doesn't want to look at you. It'd kill me if she's upset."

I gripped that thin, gilded card and stood there, stunned.

I bit down hard on my lip, forced out a smile, and said softly, "Okay."

Two years later, Adrian finally got what he wanted, and married me through the Vance family in full view of everyone.Just as the old Don had predicted, the elders opposed me, a woman from a wiped-out family, becoming Donna, same as ever. But Adrian fought for it, seized it, crushed every voice of dissent with an iron hand, and locked the absolute power of the whole family firmly in his own grip.Sometimes, watching him bristling with menace, sleeping with a gun in his hand, even I felt worn out on his behalf.I asked him if it was worth it.He held me tight and said, voice rough, of course it was.He only wanted to prove to me that he was the same as five years ago. That he'd still give everything for me, still give me anything I wanted, and still go to war with the whole world for my sake.He said he'd never changed.I looked into his stubborn, exhausted eyes and remembered before, when we were crammed into that tiny basement in the slums. We had nothing then, could have been killed

  • Reunion with the Don After Parting   Chapter 11

That day, I won a beautiful victory. The whole East Coast was buzzing about how heartless the Vances were, and about me, the woman who'd swallowed every humiliation to save Adrian. The old Don's authority collapsed fast. For his coldness toward his own blood, the old Don even drew the Commission's watchful eye.Enemies circling the family's holdings saw the crack and moved, all of them itching to carve into Vance assets.Within a week there were several bloody clashes.Adrian was run ragged. The family elders demanded, loudly, that they throw out the troublemaker splitting the family. Me.Adrian just smiled, and in front of every elder, said coldly, "So we lost a little money and a few venues. What of it? Under my father, your tolerance for pressure got embarrassingly thin.""And another thing. The one who betrayed this family was never Eve. It was my father.""Eve. I'm marrying her. That's final."Adrian truly didn't care.Moving against him now wasn't as simple as it had been five ye

  • Reunion with the Don After Parting   Chapter 10

Adrian called off the engagement with Charlotte. He used the full weight of the Vance name to crush the Whitmores' resistance. And to answer for it to the family, he seized three shipping routes single-handedly.All to marry me.I quit the underground bar, moved into the Vance estate, and came and went with Adrian openly, hiding nothing.Soon the East Coast gossip spread. They said Adrian had once loved me like his own life, nearly died for me, and I'd gotten pregnant and played him. They spun a story that I'd shaken the old Don down for a million dollars back then in exchange for keeping quiet. And then secretly given birth to the child. Now that Adrian was Don and about to be married, they said, I'd crawled back out to use the boy to threaten him.Everyone pitied Charlotte, said that she came from the Whitmore family, so beautiful, such a powerful background, that she was the one fit to be Donna. And me, a rat from a fallen house, a traitor before and a traitor forever. They knew I'd

That day, the doctors brought Damian back.He slipped into a deep coma, and no one could say when he'd wake.I sat there staring at him lying so still in the ICU bed, like he was only sleeping.Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Charlotte quietly smiling. She faked a sigh and scolded me, frowning. "Eve, if you'd told Adrian, told me the truth sooner, I'm not a petty person. I could have let the child through the Vance family's door, let him call me mother.""He never had to suffer this much. It's all because of your fake pride, and now you've nearly gotten him killed..."She must have thought she could finally rest easy.Damian was alive but might as well be gone, and between Adrian and me there was now a raw, bleeding wound that would never heal. She thought I'd never forgive Adrian. That in the end, the woman who married the Don and became Donna could only be her. She'd forgotten, maybe. Back then I gave Adrian up because I wanted a quiet life. But now, everyone in the underworld

I watched the resuscitation room doors slam shut and the red light come on. I sank to the floor and couldn't say a word.Adrian reached down to lift me up.I caught his hand and bit into it, hard, with everything I had.He didn't pull away. He just held still and let me take it out on him.Until I tasted blood, until I had no strength left, I finally broke and pushed him off.I staggered to my feet and asked him, desperate, "Adrian, why do you keep coming after me? I only wanted a clean goodbye. I was doing fine on my own..."He clenched his teeth and cut me off, eyes red, throwing it back at me. "You ask why I keep coming after you? You don't know? I've been out of my mind missing you!""You say you were doing fine? Begging people for money everywhere, dressing like that in an underground bar, ruining yourself, rotting in the mud. You call that fine?""You think I wanted to come find you? I just couldn't stand watching you hurt. You tell me what I was supposed to do.""Eve, you wronge

My back hit the wall, and I grunted at the pain.Damian must have heard. He ran out of the ward on bare little feet.He spread his arms and planted himself in front of me, glaring up at Adrian, refusing to let him touch me again.Adrian looked down at him, a cold smile tugging at his mouth, and said flatly, "You're just like your mother. Insufferable."I watched Damian's eyes slowly redden. That one line must have cut him to the core.Under his pillow he'd been secretly keeping a newspaper clipping of Adrian. He'd always known Adrian was his father.Through all those painful nights after he got sick, he'd fall asleep in my arms and dream his daddy had come home.He said the daddy in his dreams missed Damian so much.Just like Damian missed his daddy, always crying about it in secret. He said his daddy wasn't going to leave anymore, and wouldn't let Mommy work so hard at the underground bar ever again.Except then the dream would end, and Damian met his father for real.Only to hear him
