Chapter 2

Author: Snowstorm
I wanted nothing but to go home.

Three years ago, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given only two months to live. It was then that the system sent me an invitation.

As long as I completed the mission in this world, I could return to reality and regain my health. I agreed without hesitation.

Like a parched traveler discovering an oasis, I threw myself entirely into the conquest. As long as it could increase Jake's affection for me, I was willing to set aside my pride and become the woman he wanted.

Over the past three years, Jake's affection level for me had constantly risen and fallen. Every time it dropped, I would replay every moment in my mind, searching for where I might have gone wrong. I addressed each flaw, examining them one by one.

Whenever my progress rose again, it proved I had done the right thing. By following this method, I became Jake's ideal girlfriend. Before long, my score reached 99%.

This time was no different. As long as I perfected the art of pleasing Jake in bed, I was convinced I could win back his love.

I threw myself entirely into this pursuit. I watched adult films, read erotic stories, and even bought research books.

Some of my recent studies included "A Complete Guide to Physical Intimacy", "The Intimacy Files", and "An Introduction to Human Desire". I approached the study of human intimacy and desire with the mindset of a dedicated researcher.

Still, I knew that learning theory alone wouldn't suffice. With this in mind, I decided to visit the nightclub to observe how men and women interacted. But as I passed a private lounge, I caught Jake's boastful remarks.

Although my original goal had been to master the art of flirtation, my intentions had now changed.

Wiping the tears from my face, I summoned the system for the first time in a long while. "System, I want to go home. Please help me terminate this mission."

After what I had just witnessed, the bitter reality finally sank in. With Jake, I would never succeed. I was chasing the carrot he kept dangling in front of me.

Instead of staying here and letting him continue to toy with me, I would rather go back and spend the last two months of my life with my parents.

But the moment the system heard my decision, its shrill voice cut through the air. "Terminate this mission? Are you serious? You're the top performer in this batch of transmigrators!"

I was stunned. "Top performer?"

"That's right! I've been counting on you to complete this mission so I can finally claim my bonus and retire! If you quit, how am I ever supposed to retire?"

"Wait, I still don't get it." I opened the status panel and double-checked the numbers. "Jake's affection level for me is only 60% right now. With a score this low, how could I possibly be number one?"

The system let out a snort. "Who says affection levels determine rankings? That's an old-fashioned method from the previous systems. There's no scientific basis for it at all.

"Each mission carries its own difficulty level. Some people start with an affection level of 90%, while others begin in the negatives. It would obviously be unfair to judge success solely by reaching 100% affection.

"Because of this, the new generation of systems measures performance by the range of affection fluctuations. The larger the fluctuation, the stronger your influence over the other person.

"Emma, Jake's affection level for you has been swinging back and forth like a pendulum. It shows just how much you're on his mind. He's probably uncertain about what to do next.

"Now that's the mark of true success!"

I was stunned by the system's words. Even so, I understood its meaning. With Jake having the power to adjust my score, my numbers fluctuated wildly.

He had planned to manipulate me like a pawn, but his approach ended up perfectly matching the system's new standards. Because of this, I took first place among the other contenders.

Thanks to this unexpected turn of events, I was rescued from a dead end.

Seeing my expression soften, the system hurriedly explained, "Emma, each 1% change in affection level gives you one point. Achieving 2,000 points marks a successful conquest, while 5,000 points will win you a ten-million-dollar cash prize! We can split it right down the middle.

"You're just 666 points away from 5,000! Are you seriously going to pass up this golden opportunity?"

After a brief silence, the system spoke again."Emma, I did this for your own good."Have you forgotten how Jake treated you back then? Now that he's in your world, you finally have a chance to get back at him for everything he's done."To make things easier, I even gave you the same cheat ability he had. From now on, you can control Jake's progress too."Isn't this a perfect plan?""No, it's not!"Just as I was about to continue arguing, only a flat disconnect tone remained. "Sorry, the system you're trying to reach has officially retired."I couldn't believe the system had left me to deal with this mess on my own."Emma…" Jake's timid voice pulled my attention back.I looked above his head. As expected, a translucent status panel hovered in the air. Next to it, the display read: "Initial Affection Level: 1%." With a flick of my finger, the panel shifted. When his score reached 90%, Jake's eyes sparkled with joy.At 50%, he fidgeted nervously, gripping the wrinkled edge o

Dakota and I eventually came to an agreement. Following the plan, she led Jake to the cliff—just as we had intended to catch him in the act.Jake's face froze in utter disbelief. He staggered backward, his Adam's apple bobbing. "…But why?" he croaked. Before I could answer, a sudden thought crossed his mind. He immediately turned toward the status panel hovering above my head. As he tried to adjust my points, it became clear he couldn't move them at all."That's impossible… What happened to my control? Why can't I adjust your score?" Jake panicked, his fingers clawing frantically at the air. Much to his disbelief, the numbers soon vanished under the relentless rain, taking with it the three years of control he had over me."This game is over, Jake," I said slowly. "Thanks to you, I've earned ten million dollars for myself and my system. Had it not been for your twisted schemes, I doubt that I would have walked away with a lifetime's worth of wealth.""No! Emma, you can't leave!" J

Jake's voice trembled. "Where's Dakota?" he demanded.Tilting my head, I smiled like a lunatic. "She fell off the cliff. Did you hear it? The echo bouncing back from the valley is strangely beautiful—""Did you seriously push her?" Jake snapped, seizing my throat with one hand. His fingers sank into my skin, and his veins throbbed at his temples. "How dare you lay a finger on my woman!"Unfazed, I let him choke me. I traced the back of his hand, tears shimmering in my eyes. "Jakey, I did it for you… Without her, all your affection will belong to me…""You're insane!" he bellowed. After shoving me aside, he staggered toward the cliff's edge. "Dakota! Dakota!"How ironic. He had never cared much for Dakota to begin with. Yet the instant he believed she had died because of him, memories of their intimate, tender moments came rushing back.Although Dakota shone brightly at the nightclub, she transformed into a graceful, refined woman whenever she was with him. She was utterly magneti

Jake's expression darkened. "What a way to kill the mood. My affection level just dropped by 10%.""Deduct it if you want. No matter how it changes, it still counts toward my score," I thought. As my progress crept back up toward 90%, Jake became stingy again. "Your score climbed too quickly before. I'll have to ration it now. If it rises too fast, you might get too full of yourself."Even after I cooked him more than a dozen dishes, I only got a 0.3% increase. My face flushed. "Jakey, last time I cooked, you raised my score by 8%—""You know the concept of diminishing marginal utility, right?" Jake replied boldly. "It's like coffee. The first cup perks you up, but by the third or fourth, it barely does anything.""But—""Don't try to persuade me otherwise," Jake interrupted lazily. "The rules are mine. Besides, you're a transmigrator navigating this game. Shouldn't you want to put in the effort for me?"From that day forward, a single chore raised my score by just 0.1%, a bowl

I pretended to be terrified and looked up at him in disbelief. "H-How could you possibly know about the game? Or the affection levels?" I stammered.Jake's lips curled into a satisfied smile. "Let me be honest with you," he said unhurriedly. "I don’t just know about your progress—I control it."His gaze lifted slightly, and he stared at the top of my head. "My current affection level for you is 8%."As Jake read my score aloud, the corners of his lips twisted into a sinister grin. "Emma, did you really think your progress was something you could control?"I can change your score with a mere flick of my finger." As he spoke, his finger made a casual swipe through the air. In an instant, his affection level for me dropped from 8% to 3%.I widened my eyes, keeping up the pretense. "How could that be? Anyway, I'm not convinced. Single-digit fluctuations happen all the time; they don't prove anything."Jake let out a sharp, contemptuous laugh and waved his fingers again. With a swift

The system grew anxious. "Emma, Jake's affection levels aren't fluctuating enough. At this pace, the cash prize might slip through our fingers…"Why don't you apologize to him? It might boost your points again!"I shook my head. It wasn't the right time yet.In the past, I had been completely focused on raising Jake's affection level to 100%. Stepping out of line was the last thing I would have done. But now that I had pulled away, the irony of the situation finally hit me.While Jake maneuvered me like a chess piece, he failed to see that even the player could fall into a trap of their own making.Every time he manipulated my progress, it was an unspoken admission of my influence over him.He constantly expected a reaction from me. But the moment my response didn't match his expectations, he became flustered and uneasy. In this psychological game, I had become a force that he could not escape.I held back, waiting for the perfect opportunity to reverse the tide of the game.
