Chapter 3

Author: Snowstorm
"Wait, doesn't that mean that I've already completed my mission? Why didn't you inform me that I could go back to reality and get my health back?" I asked warily.

The system grew embarrassed. "Well… I was hoping to earn that bonus. With your talent, you shot straight to the top of the leaderboard in such a short time. Which system wouldn't be tempted? As long as you put in just a little more effort, earning another 666 points would be a breeze for you!"

A warmth spread through my chest. Amid the surge of emotion, I forced myself to calm down. "Seventy–thirty. I take seventy, you take thirty. Agree, and I’ll keep playing."

"H-How could you—"

"You had better choose your words carefully. If you hadn’t deliberately kept this from me, I’d have gone home long ago. Why would I stay here just to be humiliated?"

The system babbled incoherently. After what felt like an eternity, it finally nodded and shouted toward the sky, "Looks like I ran into a real trickster!"

The bathroom was filled with rising steam.

For three years, I had lived every day in constant anxiety, trying every possible way to please Jake.

But now that I knew I was heading home soon, I could truly relax for the first time.

Water streamed down my body, washing away both the grime of the nightclub and Jake's lingering presence.

With a click, the bathroom door handle twisted.

"Who's there?" I quickly grabbed a towel nearby and wrapped it around myself.

"Who else could it be?" Jake said, a chuckle slipping from his lips. He stepped into the bathroom without the slightest hesitation.

At that moment, I suddenly remembered that the door lock had recorded his fingerprint. I hadn't gotten around to removing it yet.

"Get out! Can't you see I'm taking a shower?" I snapped.

Jake, however, didn't take me seriously. Just as he raised an eyebrow, I noticed that my progress bar had ticked up by 1%.

"And why can't I look at you? Weren't you quite enthusiastic before?" He stepped closer, his gaze landing on my bare shoulder. "I haven't seen you in days, Emma-Bear. Are you sure you can resist me?"

Whenever situations like this came up, I would usually swallow my anger and follow Jake's lead. After all, I couldn't afford to see my scores drop.

But now, things were different. I no longer cared whether his affection level for me was high or low. All that mattered was that it kept fluctuating.

Without warning, I grabbed the showerhead and aimed it right at Jake. Water splashed across him, leaving his carefully styled hair drenched.

"Get out!" I repeated.

Jake wiped the water from his face. When he looked up, impatience shone in his eyes. "Damn it, Emma! You know I don't like this whole 'playing hard to get' routine. We'll have a proper conversation once you start behaving."

Without uttering a single word, I stared at him, my expression growing colder.

Jake's brows furrowed, but after a moment, a confident smile spread across his face. As he flicked his fingers in the air, my progress fell by 10%.

In the past, a decline this significant would have thrown me into a panic. I would have compromised my own boundaries just to win him back.

Jake's smile remained fixed on his face. Out of nowhere, he placed a gift box on the sink. "I bought this for you. After your shower, put it on and let me have a look."

He swung the door open and walked out confidently. Once he was gone, I went to the box and opened it. It contained a set of alluring lingerie and black stockings.

It was obvious that Jake had come to test the results of his so-called "training".

As I picked up the sheer black fabric, a wave of disgust stirred within me.

Spinning on my heel, I reached for a turtleneck sweater and a pair of jeans from the back of the wardrobe. At the same time, I grabbed the black-rimmed glasses Jake despised most.

After wrapping myself from head to toe, I pushed open the bedroom door.

Jake was leaning against the windowsill, a lighter perched between his fingers. The tiny flame wavered and flickered in his grasp.

The instant he noticed my attire, he abruptly extinguished the lighter.

"What game are you trying to play now?" Veins bulged along his neck as he stared at my fully covered figure. "Where's the lingerie I gave you?"

After a brief silence, the system spoke again."Emma, I did this for your own good."Have you forgotten how Jake treated you back then? Now that he's in your world, you finally have a chance to get back at him for everything he's done."To make things easier, I even gave you the same cheat ability he had. From now on, you can control Jake's progress too."Isn't this a perfect plan?""No, it's not!"Just as I was about to continue arguing, only a flat disconnect tone remained. "Sorry, the system you're trying to reach has officially retired."I couldn't believe the system had left me to deal with this mess on my own."Emma…" Jake's timid voice pulled my attention back.I looked above his head. As expected, a translucent status panel hovered in the air. Next to it, the display read: "Initial Affection Level: 1%." With a flick of my finger, the panel shifted. When his score reached 90%, Jake's eyes sparkled with joy.At 50%, he fidgeted nervously, gripping the wrinkled edge o

Dakota and I eventually came to an agreement. Following the plan, she led Jake to the cliff—just as we had intended to catch him in the act.Jake's face froze in utter disbelief. He staggered backward, his Adam's apple bobbing. "…But why?" he croaked. Before I could answer, a sudden thought crossed his mind. He immediately turned toward the status panel hovering above my head. As he tried to adjust my points, it became clear he couldn't move them at all."That's impossible… What happened to my control? Why can't I adjust your score?" Jake panicked, his fingers clawing frantically at the air. Much to his disbelief, the numbers soon vanished under the relentless rain, taking with it the three years of control he had over me."This game is over, Jake," I said slowly. "Thanks to you, I've earned ten million dollars for myself and my system. Had it not been for your twisted schemes, I doubt that I would have walked away with a lifetime's worth of wealth.""No! Emma, you can't leave!" J

Jake's voice trembled. "Where's Dakota?" he demanded.Tilting my head, I smiled like a lunatic. "She fell off the cliff. Did you hear it? The echo bouncing back from the valley is strangely beautiful—""Did you seriously push her?" Jake snapped, seizing my throat with one hand. His fingers sank into my skin, and his veins throbbed at his temples. "How dare you lay a finger on my woman!"Unfazed, I let him choke me. I traced the back of his hand, tears shimmering in my eyes. "Jakey, I did it for you… Without her, all your affection will belong to me…""You're insane!" he bellowed. After shoving me aside, he staggered toward the cliff's edge. "Dakota! Dakota!"How ironic. He had never cared much for Dakota to begin with. Yet the instant he believed she had died because of him, memories of their intimate, tender moments came rushing back.Although Dakota shone brightly at the nightclub, she transformed into a graceful, refined woman whenever she was with him. She was utterly magneti

Jake's expression darkened. "What a way to kill the mood. My affection level just dropped by 10%.""Deduct it if you want. No matter how it changes, it still counts toward my score," I thought. As my progress crept back up toward 90%, Jake became stingy again. "Your score climbed too quickly before. I'll have to ration it now. If it rises too fast, you might get too full of yourself."Even after I cooked him more than a dozen dishes, I only got a 0.3% increase. My face flushed. "Jakey, last time I cooked, you raised my score by 8%—""You know the concept of diminishing marginal utility, right?" Jake replied boldly. "It's like coffee. The first cup perks you up, but by the third or fourth, it barely does anything.""But—""Don't try to persuade me otherwise," Jake interrupted lazily. "The rules are mine. Besides, you're a transmigrator navigating this game. Shouldn't you want to put in the effort for me?"From that day forward, a single chore raised my score by just 0.1%, a bowl

I pretended to be terrified and looked up at him in disbelief. "H-How could you possibly know about the game? Or the affection levels?" I stammered.Jake's lips curled into a satisfied smile. "Let me be honest with you," he said unhurriedly. "I don’t just know about your progress—I control it."His gaze lifted slightly, and he stared at the top of my head. "My current affection level for you is 8%."As Jake read my score aloud, the corners of his lips twisted into a sinister grin. "Emma, did you really think your progress was something you could control?"I can change your score with a mere flick of my finger." As he spoke, his finger made a casual swipe through the air. In an instant, his affection level for me dropped from 8% to 3%.I widened my eyes, keeping up the pretense. "How could that be? Anyway, I'm not convinced. Single-digit fluctuations happen all the time; they don't prove anything."Jake let out a sharp, contemptuous laugh and waved his fingers again. With a swift

The system grew anxious. "Emma, Jake's affection levels aren't fluctuating enough. At this pace, the cash prize might slip through our fingers…"Why don't you apologize to him? It might boost your points again!"I shook my head. It wasn't the right time yet.In the past, I had been completely focused on raising Jake's affection level to 100%. Stepping out of line was the last thing I would have done. But now that I had pulled away, the irony of the situation finally hit me.While Jake maneuvered me like a chess piece, he failed to see that even the player could fall into a trap of their own making.Every time he manipulated my progress, it was an unspoken admission of my influence over him.He constantly expected a reaction from me. But the moment my response didn't match his expectations, he became flustered and uneasy. In this psychological game, I had become a force that he could not escape.I held back, waiting for the perfect opportunity to reverse the tide of the game.
