Chapter 1

Instead of feeling relieved, my suspicion grew heavier after ending the call with Arnold.

Surprise?

Natalie had been top of her class her entire life, racking up competition awards like they were nothing.

The principal of the best high school in the city, Dream High School, had personally called me to guarantee her enrollment.

With grades like Natalie's, did she really need Arnold to pull strings for her to get into the accelerated track? Not to mention, him even asking me to make him look good was just asking for too much.

I recalled how Arnold had questioned me a few days back. He'd said, "Why do you waste time reading all those random psychology reports?"

He didn't know I had been building the psychological evaluation model for the city's "Gifted Scholars Program."

The more I thought about it, the less it added up.

I spun the wheel and stepped on the gas, driving straight to the admissions office of Dream High School.

Half an hour later, I was standing in the crowded admissions office.

As I pushed past the crowd, I found Joanna Wimbleton, the teacher in charge of the enrollment process. "Hello, I'm Natalie Steward's mother, Whitney Steward."

Joanna looked up and adjusted her glasses, looking confused. "Natalie Steward's mother? Didn't you just leave?"

My heart sank.

She continued, "Her mother, Ms. Marshall, was just here. She confirmed the uniform size before leaving earlier."

Ms. Marshall?

I tightened the grip on the strap of my crossbody bag. "I'm Natalie's mother, Ms. Wimbleton. I'm a Steward, not Marshall."

Joanna's expression went from confusion to irritation. "It's a busy day, ma'am. Please don't cause any trouble.

"On Natalie's enrollment form, the name of her mother is clearly listed in the column—Elaine Marshall. She just finished the paperwork."

The name Elaine Marshall hit me cold. Wasn't that the name of Arnold's distant cousin, who was always hanging around our house looking for handouts?

At that moment, a familiar figure showed up at the entrance of the admissions office.

The woman was wearing the designer dress I'd bought weeks ago as Natalie's enrollment gift. She was also carrying the latest handbag, which had been from me too.

Elaine's smug smile immediately froze upon seeing me. Her gaze anxiously darted around. "Whit? What brings you here?" She strode over in a hurry, grabbed my arm, and tried to drag me out. "This isn't the place to talk, Whit. Let's head outside, and I'll explain things to you."

That syrupy and intimate nickname made my stomach flip.

I pushed her hand away and said, "Who are you calling 'Whit' here? You'd better make things clear, Elaine. Why are you here, and why are you wearing my daughter's dress? Why did the admissions staff say that you're my daughter's mother?"

Although my voice was soft, every word of mine landed hard.

Elaine's face paled. Her eyes started reddening, looking as if she was being wronged.

She replied, "You've misunderstood, Whitney. Arnold only asked me to help out since it's the enrollment season, and I'm raising my child on my own.

"As for the dress, he said Natalie couldn't fit in it anymore, so he gave it to Linda." Elaine even pitifully tugged at the dress. "If you're not happy, I'll take it off immediately and give it back to you, Whitney."

Around us, the other parents started pointing fingers at me.

"Who's that? She dresses so well but is so unreasonable."

"That's right. Must she make a scene when that lady's just helping out? That's not very classy of her."

"She's probably just jealous that she's younger and prettier."

The court handed down its ruling a month later. Arnold and Elaine were sentenced to a year in prison for forging official documents. On top of that, they were ordered by the court to pay 20 thousand dollars as damages for the emotional trauma they'd caused Natalie and me.I was unexpectedly calm on the day the judgment was out, and I declined Lynn's offer to go out for a celebration. To me, this was not a victory, it was just a long-overdue reckoning.Soon, Natalie and I moved out of the house that carried our many bitter memories. With my savings, I bought a place near her new school. While it wasn't large, it was filled with sunlight. We decorated it together too, filling every corner with things that we liked. On weekends, I made a point to set work aside. I would accompany Natalie to the library, the science museum, or simply sit on the balcony with our books and a cup of tea, enjoying a quiet afternoon.I began to slow down and enjoy life, doing things more than just to s

While Arnold's and Elaine's belongings weren't much, they were expensive. The designer suits I'd once bought for him and the jewelry pieces he'd given Elaine all went into the trash bags. Then, I hauled them all down to the dumpster.Once I was done, I called the part-time cleaning agent and got her to come over for a deep cleaning the next day. I wanted the house to be completely cleaned.…The next morning, I took a day off to bring Natalie to the mall.I bought her a new dress and a new backpack. Everything that was hers had to be brand new.We shopped, had a good meal, and went to the movies. For once, we did everything an ordinary mother and daughter would do.That day, Natalie finally broke out into a bright smile.…In the afternoon, I received an unexpected call. It was from my mother-in-law, Catherine Brown. Her cries filled my ears as soon as the call was connected. "Whitney, you heartless woman! Haven't you ruined Arnold enough? What more do you want?" Catherine'

I greeted them with a smile and headed straight to my office. My office was spacious. Other than a desk and a bookshelf, it even had a small lounge tucked into a corner.I set Natalie down on the couch in the lounge and poured her some water. "This is where I work, Natalie."She curiously looked around. On the wall, there were countless photographs of me with well-known scholars from both within the country and abroad, as well as various trophies and certificates.Arnold had never seen any of these. To him, I was nothing more than an ordinary employee working in an ordinary company. It wasn't that I had deliberately hidden the truth, but he simply hadn't cared enough to ask. All he'd cared about was whether my paycheck was enough to cover his credit card bills, and whether it was enough for him to buy the latest gadgets."You're amazing, Mommy!" Natalie's eyes lit up as she looked at the photographs on the wall.I ruffled her hair. "You'll be amazing too, Natalie."At that mo

The couple who were clinging to each other just moments ago were now tearing each other apart. It was more entertaining than anything on TV.Meanwhile, the surrounding parents whispered and pointed at them as they watched with morbid fascination.I coldly watched everything unfold, feeling unperturbed. Then, I walked over to Lawrence and softly said, "I'm sorry to have troubled you with this, Mr. Grant."Lawrence waved a hand. "Not at all, Dr. Steward. You're a distinguished psychological consultant for our city's education system and an expert we're honored to bring on board. It was a failure on our part for your child to be faced with such mistreatment in one of our schools."He then turned to Mr. Conwell. "This must be thoroughly investigated, Mr. Conwell! Forging records and identity fraud are serious violations. Everyone involved will be held accountable with no exceptions!""Got it!" Mr. Conwell furiously nodded.Lawrence then looked at Natalie in my arms and softened his

Arnold pushed all the blame onto me, trying to make himself look like an innocent victim.Elaine chimed in with tears streaming down her face, "That's right, Whitney. You never understood how much Arnold was suffering. "We truly love each other, and all we want is to give Linda a complete family. What did we do wrong?""You've done nothing wrong?" As I held Natalie close, I slowly made my way over to them. "You stole the future my daughter earned through years of studying hard. You slandered me in public and tried to paint me as a madwoman. And now, you're asking me what you did wrong?"My voice was cold. "Arnold, Elaine, your biggest mistake was messing with me."I couldn't be bothered to waste my time talking to such clowns anymore. So, I calmly made a call in front of everyone."Hello, Mr. Grant. This is Whitney Steward. There's been a serious problem with the admissions process in Dream High School. "Someone forged a student's record, and I'm concerned it might jeopardize

Lynn's voice rang out loud and clear in the admissions office. Everyone was shocked, and Arnold and Elaine's faces immediately paled."What? An illegitimate daughter?""Oh my God. He used his biological daughter's guaranteed spot to send his illegitimate daughter to school? That man is despicable!""He even lied and said that she's mentally ill. What a vicious man!"The parents who had just been pointing fingers at me earlier were now looking at me with sympathy. Meanwhile, their gazes toward Arnold and Elaine were filled with unadulterated contempt and anger.Arnold staggered slightly, almost unable to stand. He pointed at my phone and hysterically screamed, "Nonsense! You hired someone to stage this! You'll stop at nothing for revenge, Whitney!"Elaine snapped back to her senses and started crying in his arms. "I knew she won't let us off, Arnold. She's trying to ruin us and Linda!"I coldly watched their act, unbothered to even speak. Their excuses were pointless when the f
