ELEANOR
The beeping of the hospital monitors was the only thing keeping me company in the quiet room. I sat beside my father’s bed, my hand gripping his tightly as I prayed to whatever was up there to save my father. And maybe my relationship. Dad was still unconscious, and I couldn’t help but blame myself. I caused this. Everyone else thought the same as well. The doctor had said he fainted because his blood pressure was high so we needed to make sure he avoided anything that would stress him out. Mom had not looked at me since. She stayed at the other end of the bed and had not stopped crying as well. I knew she blamed me. I could see it in her body’s telltale signs that she blamed me. “Aiden” Mom suddenly called out and I looked up to see that Dad had indeed woken up. His eyes fluttered open and he looked around the room first to see where he was. A shaky breath of relief escaped my lips and my eyes watered from the relief, but my relief was short-lived when I saw the emotionless stare he pinned me with. “What are you doing here?” Dad asked with a hard tone. “What?” I asked, confused as I glanced towards my mother and back to him “You fainted Dad and we are in the hospital. Don’t you remember? Should I get the doctor?” “I remember just fine what happened, Eleanor. My question is what are you doing here?” He asked again. “Dad” I chuckled nervously “I don’t understand what you are asking” “I want nothing to do with you. You are no longer my daughter. I will not have a betrayer bear the Sterling name” I blinked, finding it hard to comprehend his words. No. There was no way he would cut me off at a time like this. “Dad, you don’t mean that, do you?” I reached for his hand, but he pulled it back before I could touch him. I recoiled, my vision blurring with tears as my stomach twisted into painful knots “Daddy” My father closed his eyes briefly and when it opened, his expression hardened again “I mean it, Eleanor.” “Is it because of the emails? I thought you were standing up for me because you believed in me?” “I stood up for you because I was desperate to make sure the marriage happened, but it didn’t, and it is all your fault” “What?” My voice cracked with disbelief “I didn’t do it. As my father, you should believe me and stand by me more than anyone else” “Stop your excuses, Eleanor” My mother snapped, cutting me off “You disgraced this family, and it is appalling to see you still trying to lie to cover up your deeds when you should be on your knees begging for forgiveness. I didn’t raise you to be a despicable woman” “Mom” I exclaimed “Don't you know the daughter you raised? I was set up” “It doesn’t matter,” My father said “The damage is done, and I just know that our stocks would suffer the consequences of your actions” “You don’t have to worry about that. I can fix this. I will find a way to prove that I...” “Prove what, Eleanor?” Mom snapped “There is nothing to fix. Theon has made it clear where he stands. The engagement is over. The wedding won’t happen and the Blackwells want nothing to do with us” “So, you are just going to abandon your own daughter for your reputation?” I tighten my fists, nails digging into my palm. Mom exhaled sharply “Stop acting like we are terrible parents when you are the one who made the mess” “My entire world is falling apart because of a lie and instead of my family to stand by me and defend me, you want to toss me aside like I am a minor inconvenience” “We are trying to save our reputation that was sabotaged by your stupid stunts.” She snapped. “To make sure nothing happens to our company, we have to cut off the problem. If our family maintains ties with you, it will do worse damage” I froze “Dad, I’m your daughter. Are you going to throw me away?” “It’s the only way” Dad answered and looked away. A sob tore its way past my lips. Theon had thrown me away and now my parents had done the same, all because of their reputation. My mother sighed again, as though she was tired of the conversation “I’ll contact the workers to pack your things. You don’t need to enter the house” I stared at her with horror. “Don’t look at me like that. I’m being kind enough to let you take a few things and some money. Don’t come back. You are no longer welcome in our home” “Where am I supposed to go?” “That’s not our concern” I let out a strangled laugh and stood up “How did I not see how horrible you both were? I hope your reputation is worth the daughter you threw away”"This reputation you act like is nothing is the same one that has allowed you to live your life as the darling of the high society" Mom sneered.
"If that's what you want to believe, then fine. I will leave"
Neither of them said a word as I staggered out of the door. In the space of a few hours, I had lost everything. I stood outside the hospital, confused and scared. I had nowhere to go. No one to run to. Wait. Isla. I still had my best friend and she was my only hope and I knew she would never turn her back on me. I hailed a cab immediately in front of the hospital and made my way to her apartment. The lights were on which meant she was back from the Blackwell's dinner. I wondered why she didn't come to the hospital with me but that was the least of my worries. I knocked frantically on her door and soon, the door swung open and Isla stood there with a smirk. “Why are you banging the door like that Elle? Do you want to pull down my door?” I ignored the tone with which she spoke “Isla, you have to help me. You are my last hope” “Help?” She asked with a tilt of her head and I nodded. “I have nowhere to go. My parents disowned me and drove me out of the house. I can’t go to Theon…” She laughed, the shrill sound cutting off the rest of the words I wanted to say. The sound isn’t the warm one I was familiar with. Instead, it was mocking and her eyes gleamed with excitement, making my blood run cold. “God, Ellie.” She sneers “Don’t tell me you ran all the way here thinking I would help you?” I took a step back “What..t?” Her lips curled into a sneer “You don’t know how long I have pretended to like you. You were so foolish and gullible that it was so easy to trick you into thinking I was your friend” “Isla, what are you saying?” “Exactly what you are hearing” she hissed “I never considered you a friend, Eleanor. You were just my stepping stone and I hated every minute I watched you smile and shine brighter than I did. You don’t know how good it felt to see you humiliated and tossed aside tonight.” I felt like I was going to be sick. She opened the door for me to see an opened bottle of wine."Look, I was even celebrating your downfall before you came here and now you've spoilt my mood..." she paused, her eyes lighting up "No, actually, you've made it better. Seeing you like this has lifted my spirits more"
“You… I trusted you” “Did I ask you to?” She sneered, her grin turning cold as she eyed me with disdain. “How are you so despicable?” I whispered, unable to believe my eyes. She shrugged, not the least bothered “That’s life, sweetheart. Now run along, I don’t want people to see me associating with a cheat and a traitor” She slammed the door in my face and I was left standing outside like a fool. My legs carried me away from the apartment and I walked aimlessly until I couldn’t any longer. I collapsed on a nearby bench just as my phone rang. I was tempted not to answer but it was Doctor Kevin. I had gone to him when I felt ill some days ago and he did some tests on me and promised to call when they were ready. “Hello,” I greeted as soon as I answered the call. “Miss Sterling, we have your test results. You are pregnant” he said, going straight to the point. The world stopped and I let out a gasp. “Are you certain?” “Yes. You are six weeks along. Congratulations.” I disconnected the call without a reply and the phone dropped to the floor. I felt everything fade away. Theon’s betrayal. My parent's rejection. Isla’s cruel nature. None of them mattered anymore. All I could think of was my baby. Theon’s child that was growing in me. “Since he decided to abandon me, he doesn’t deserve to know you” I whispered, laying my hand on my stomach. At that moment, I made a promise to my baby. I may have nothing but one day, I was going to come back and I would make them pay. A thousand times more.ELLEEliza’s laughter rang through the garden as she scrambled away from my tickling fingers. We had set up a small picnic in the middle of the garden with the blanket on the grass and a basket with all her favourite food.“You are not playing fair, Ellie” she pointed an accusing but short finger at me as a pout framed her face after she recovered from the tickles. I raised both hand innocently as a chuckle escaped my lips “But I am a villain. Bad people don’t play fair”She giggled and threw herself at me “I guess so” she flashed me a bigger smile “but I won this time since you cheated” “Nope” I shook my head “I won fair and square. There were no rules” Eliza huffed and plopped down beside me. She reached for her juice and took a bit sip before handing the cup back to me. I groaned as she wrapped her sticky hands around me then giggled mischievously because she knew she had just stained my dress. “You little brat” I laughed “I thought you were a princess? Princesses don’t cheat”
ELLEA tired yawn left my lips as I stepped out of the bathroom, with the steam from my hot shower escaping into the room before I closed the door. I pulled the towel I had draped over my head out of my face and stopped in my tracks when I came faced with a surprise sight that I should be used to by now. Theon was in my bed again. He didn’t wait for an invitation or ask like he usually does. He was just splayed comfortably on my bed like it was the most natural thing in the world. He had one arm behind his head, shirtless, his legs crossed while he scrolled through his phone with a bored expression on his face. “Seriously?” I asked with a narrowed gaze and an irritated expression on my face “Do you want to explain what you are doing in my bed?”He looked up at me with a lazy smile on his lips and shrugged “I thought we’ve gone past me needing a reason to get into your bed?” “No, we didn’t besides it was a one time thing” I argued. “It’s happened too many times for it to be a on
ELLE I was waiting for the private investigator to get me more information on Amanda and Isla, but so far, he has not given me anything noteworthy. I hoped that meant she wasn’t planning anything more but that would be a wistful thinking. I knew she had not backed down since it was obvious that she was hell bent on defeating me. I had to admit that she scared me a little. It was one of the reasons I had avoided going to the house to see Milo. I moved Jeremy and Milo from the house they were at before since Theon had followed me once. I couldn’t take the risk if he decided to go back to see Milo even though Eliza was here now. Also, I couldn’t risk Amanda getting her hands on something that would hurt me. I would never risk exposing Milo’s existence to her. I didn’t even want to imagine what she would do when she finds out that I had such a weakness. Sophie entered my office and shut the door behind her. “We’ve been here a lot lately.” “I know” I closed my laptop with a
THEONI once again disappeared into my grandfather’s study, which was now my own. Since it was buried deep inside the estate’s mansion, it became very silent in the evenings, allowing me to bury myself in thoughts. My fingers tightened around the whiskey glass in my hand as I stood by the window, looking out into the compound of the estate that was getting dark. My jaw clenched as I remembered dinner earlier and Eleanor’s demand. Her voice replayed in my head like an irritating echo, and I couldn’t stop it. “I want to manage the mall chain. I know you gave it to Elle, but she already has her hands full with the Microfinance bank, the hotel shares you gifted her, her investment firm, and she has no child to give them to”Those were the exact words she spoke. She had grown audacious, and the moves she took made me mad. I know children were never in the contract, but that line rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like she was accusing Elle of not being able to have a child. Mocking her e
ELLE I don’t even know why I keep making efforts to eat at the big dining hall when it was always quiet, even though everyone was present. It was another boring morning breakfast, and everyone looked like they had better things to do than to sit here and pretend we wanted to eat together like a normal family. My eyes were on Amanda. She looked better today, less nervous, and I was worrying my brain to think why. She must have found a solution, and I somehow suspected that I wouldn’t like it. Theon was on his tablet, reviewing documents and was yet to touch the plate of food in front of him and I knew he was going to leave for work without touching the food. Victoria, on the other hand, sipped her tea quietly. I wasn’t comfortable with how quiet she had gotten since I took the mall from her. I knew she was brewing something, and that was why I had someone following her. I wouldn’t let her take me unaware. My attention was dragged back to Amanda. She was on her phone, and the
ELLE I knew the moment Amanda found out that Diamond had been arrested. If it wasn’t the scream I heard from her room yesterday, then it was the way her bloodshot eyes kept watching everyone like she was expecting them to call her out for something. She was scared. She was making mistakes. She was unravelling. It was amusing to watch her fight not to show how much the plan she thought she had in control spiralled. Jeremy showed me the news yesterday. Though the pictures were blurred, I knew it was Diamond and Lara. After all, we sent those pictures to the police and the media. I also instructed the private investigator to watch her always. I told him to make sure nothing she does escapes him. I wasn’t doing this just for evidence, but for my own safety. If Amanda could kill someone, then I wasn’t going to take any chances with her. I needed to be extremely careful, like Jeremy had insisted. I sat in the living room, pretending to be scrolling through my phone while she sa
AUTHOR’S POV The pressure on Amanda was mounting. She could not sleep, her eyes were aching, and she had a constant headache that wouldn’t go away. She felt like a trapped animal and the house she had done so many things to enter now felt like a cage. She was drowning with anxiety from it all. She jumped when her phone started to ring, and her breathing picked up when she saw it was an unknown number. At first, she didn’t want to answer the call for fear it was going to be her parents calling to ask for the money but something at the back of her mind ask what if it was Diamond calling to tell her he got out of prison and everything was now okay. With that in mind, she snatched the phone from the table and answered it immediately. “Hello?” she whispered uncertainly, her heart pounding in her chest. “Amanda,” Diamond growled on the other end of the line. “Diamond?” Her heart leapt when she heard his voice and she was started to believe that maybe everything would be fine no
AUTHOR’S POVAmanda could barely hold herself together. She sat on the edge of her bed, her perfectly manicured fingers drumming on the edge of the bed while the other hand stared at the phone she couldn’t look away from. The sun wasn’t enough to filter the chill she could feel creeping down her spine.Diamond should have contacted her by now. They had agreed to meet today since he wanted to collect payment for killing Lara. The bastard didn’t want the huge amount of money she offered. He wanted her body and she had no other choice than to give him what he wanted if she didn’t want him to go to the police or worse, send her along with her cousin.Disgust curled in her stomach at the thought of fucking that dirty scumbag. She didn’t know what she was thinking when she dated him back them. She eyed the phone with impatience. It’s been an hour later than the agreed time when he said he would call. She picked her real phone and entered the news app she had on the phone and refreshed
ELLEAfter finding out that Amanda was capable of ending the life of anyone who got in the way of what she wanted, I shivered in fear anytime I saw her. I didn’t know if she noticed or not, but there was something that I decided irrespective of what she was capable of. I needed to know just how much she knew and what I could use to end her when the time came. I still needed more proof in order to get rid of her without revealing my identity. She had been acting weird lately and this had made her make a lot of mistakes and even break character without her realising it now. Like now, she was eating a caramel cookie which I was allergic to. I eyed the maids around, seeing the opportunity to start planting doubts that would be useful when the right time came. “I thought Eleanor hated caramel because she was allergic to them?” I pointed out, using my name in third person on purpose. “She did,” Amanda said too quickly, glancing at the maid with panic on her face. “I mean, I do.
