I came down for breakfast and found everyone already seated at the table. My father in-law, William sat at the head like always, his wife Celeste to his right, Oscar across from the empty chair that was mine, and Theodore next to his mom. “Good morning, Father,” I said. William gave a short nod without looking up from his plate. “Good morning, mother.” “Good morning, Agatha.” She offered me a small smile that barely reached her eyes. I took my seat beside Oscar. Theodore glanced at me over the rim of his coffee cup. “Don’t I deserve a good morning too?” he asked. I was older than him. He was Oscar’s little brother, barely out of his early twenties, yet he always spoke like the world owed him attention. Like I owed him attention. Still, I kept my tone polite. “Good morning, Theo.” “Theodore. You don’t get to shorten my name.” He frowned. “I’m sorry, Theodore.” I reached for the serving dish and slowly put food on my plate. The silence at the table felt stronger than usual. It's as if everyone was avoiding saying something to piss the other off. I started eating even though I didn’t have much of an appetite. Every sound…the clink of cutlery, the soft scrape of a chair, it all felt too loud. William set his fork down. “The quality control problem is getting out of hand,” he said, looking straight at Oscar. “That last shipment was an embarrassment. Do you understand what it means when clients start questioning the Devereaux name?” Oscar kept his eyes on his plate for a second before answering. “I’m handling it, Father. I’ve already spoken to the department heads. It won’t happen again.” “You’ve been saying that for weeks.” William’s voice rose. “I didn’t build this company so my son could sit around making flimsy excuses. Results, Oscar. That is what I want.” “I’m doing everything I can,” Oscar said, frustration evident in his voice. “I have it under control.” “Oscar is right. We’re on it, Father and the team is working overtime. We’ll fix the distribution issues before the next batch goes out.” Theodore leaned forward, looking at his father. William looked between the two of them. “You had better. I will not tolerate failure. Not from the company employees, and certainly not from my own sons.” No one spoke after that. Celeste kept her gaze lowered, cutting her food into smaller and smaller pieces without eating much of it. I watched her for a moment and wondered, not for the first time, how long she had been sitting through mornings like this. William wiped his mouth with the napkin, pushed his chair back, and stood. “I’m leaving. I expect better news by the end of the week.” Celeste stood and carefully took William’s jacket from the back of his chair. She held it open for him and helped him slide his arms into the sleeves, then stepped in front of him to fix his tie. Her fingers moved quickly, straightening the knot and checking the buttons of his suit like she had done it a thousand times before. William let out an impatient breath and shoved her hands away. The push was hard enough that Celeste stumbled and her palms landed flat on the dining table to stop herself from falling. I slowly looked at her. The way William treated his wife was etched in my memory. He spoke to her like she was furniture, useful only when he needed something and easily pushed aside when she wasn’t. I bit my lip and told myself that every marriage had its own way of working. Some people just showed love differently. That was what I kept repeating in my head. William walked out without another word. Theodore leaned back in his chair and looked at Oscar. “We should go for drinks this evening, brother. It’s been a while.” Oscar gave a small nod. I reached under the table and found his hand, holding it gently. “Maybe I could come too,” I said, keeping my voice light. “It’s been a long time since we spent time together. Just the two of us… or even with Theodore. I miss that.” Oscar pulled his hand away like my touch burned and wiped his mouth with the napkin. “Sure, Theo. I’ll text you once I’m done for the day at the factory.” He stood and walked out without even glancing at me. Theodore’s smile disappeared the second the door closed. He turned to me with a look that made my heart beat faster. “It’s already bad enough that you’re married to my brother. Now you want to tag along whenever we want to hang out? How greedy can you get?” I opened my mouth. “I wasn’t trying to–” “Save it.” “Theodore, you know you're not supposed to speak to your brother’s wife that way.” Celeste said gently. He rolled his eyes, picked up his plate, and left the dining room without another word. Celeste looked at me for a long moment, then spoke in a voice low enough that only I could hear. “This kind of marriage isn’t worth it, Agatha. Leave before you become as trapped as I am.” The words rang like a bell in my brains. I stared at her, waiting for her to say that she's joking. Leave my marriage? Who the hell does that? I can't leave my husband! “I can’t believe you’re saying this about your own son, Mother. I love Oscar. Right now our marriage is just going through a rough phase. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me.” “I’m just…” “Please, Mother. I get that you’re worried about me, but I love Oscar very much and nothing is ever going to make me leave him.” I didn’t mean to sound rude, but that was the truth. I loved him. I had built my whole life around him. Walking away wasn’t something I could even let myself think about.→ Oscar ←I stormed into the estate and headed straight for my bedroom, slamming the door behind me hard enough to make the walls vibrate."That bastard, Kieran!"I slammed my fist into the wall, barely feeling the pain that shot through my knuckles as I glared at the spot where my hand had landed.Kieran fucking Vincenzo. What a wild way to answer that woman's surname. Did she know about this? Why the hell had that bastard born out of wedlock decided to show his face now?He should have stayed hidden, just as he had all these years. He should have continued living whatever miserable life he'd chosen for himself instead of coming back to Westervale and interfering in matters that had absolutely nothing to do with him.But no. The bastard had to return, and he couldn't even have the decency to do it politely. He had walked into that auction, outbid everyone without blinking, and taken the land we had spent weeks preparing to acquire. A billion dollars. He had spent a fucking billio
→ Kieran ←I arrived at the private villa, one of my minor properties in Westervale, with the satisfaction of knowing that everything had gone exactly as I had planned.Securing the land was the primary objective, but having William and Oscar show up in person had been a wildcard I hadn't anticipated. My initial plan was to outbid everyone at the auction and let the national broadcast do the rest. The event was being televised live, which meant William would inevitably watch me return to Westervale in real time, whether he wanted to or not.I had imagined his reaction when he discovered that I was the man who had bought the land he desperately wanted, but seeing him sitting there with Oscar and Theodore while I dropped a billion on their target had been even more satisfying than I expected. As I stepped through the entryway, the familiar scent of home-cooked food drifted down the hallway, and I found myself relaxing before I even reached the dining room."There's my baby boy!"Mom dro
→ Lena ← Kieran said we were headed to this auction to make our first public appearance as a couple, especially to the Devereauxs, but buying a piece of land worth one billion was far too much. What was he thinking? If I knew this was his plan, I would have talked him out of it.That wasn't even the worst part. The worst part was the fact that the land was registered in my name! I was still holding his arm as he spoke to someone on the phone, talking about meeting her when the night was over.Who's thos her?We walked out of the auction hall into the polished marble lobby, only to find Oscar, William, and Theodore waiting like sentinels. They really couldn't wait to see us, huh?"And the prodigal son returns!" William sneered, stepping forward.Silence stretched through the lobby. I froze, my hand tightening slightly on Kieran’s sleeve as confusion flickered through me. Son?It's pretty obvious that there's a lot of things Kieran hasn't told me about himself, especially what he ha
.. Six Months Later.. → Oscar ← Six months was all it took for my life to finally look the way it was supposed to. I stood in front of the mirror fixing my cufflinks while Naomi sat on the edge of the bed behind me with one hand resting on her stomach. We only found out last week that she was pregnant. The doctor confirmed it on a Thursday and I still hadn’t fully gotten used to the idea of becoming a father, especially with the woman I actually loved and wanted. I watched her through the mirror as she stood up and slowly walked toward me. She wrapped her arms around my waist from behind and rested her cheek against my back. “You’re staring at me again,” she said without looking up away from me. “Can you blame me?” I turned around in her arms. “You’re carrying my child and you keep getting prettier every morning.” She smiled and I leaned down to kiss her. There was no more hiding and no more waiting for the right moment. Agatha was dead and everyone had moved on. The p

I was still on my knees, soaked from head to toe, with water running down my face and dripping from my hair. My clothes were heavy from being wet, and I could feel them sticking to my skin.“He’ll stay out there until he learns some manners!” His cruel voice came from somewhere beyond the rain, distant and muffled, but I knew exactly who it was. I knew that voice well enough to feel the fear settling inside me before I even saw him.It was so fucking cold.I tried to move, but my body was shaking too badly. My hands were freezing, and I could barely feel my fingers anymore. My knees hurt from being on the ground, and my teeth were beginning to chatter. I wanted to get up, wanted to go inside. I wanted my mother.I looked toward the house and saw my mother standing behind the glass doors, her face pale as she pressed one hand
→ Agatha ←…Present Time…He still stood in front of me, staring down without saying anything else. What does he mean by congratulations on my funeral?“So you kidnapped me?!” I asked.“In the literal sense, yes, but practically I saved your life. It would have ended pretty badly if you had gotten on that plane,” he said in a low tone.“And how did you know the plane was going to crash? Were you the one responsible for it? Are you working for somebody who wants me dead?” I asked hastily. He looked at me with a coldness that made me uncomfortable. I could not let my guard down. I did not know this man, and the last three months had taught me that I should not trust anyone but myself.“I think it’s clear here who is after your life. That should answer your question.” He turned and walked a few steps away from where I stood by the door. Was it really the Devereaux family again? Oscar? My hand rose on its own and my fingers traced the scars, feeling the roughness beneath them. I became aw
