Isabella's POV

I slapped together two sandwiches with whatever I could find. I got some ham, cheese and lettuce, but I could barely concentrate on what I was doing. My mind kept circling back to that number.

Ten million dollars!

When I walked back into the living room carrying two plates of sandwiches, Elena was sitting exactly where I left her, but she looked more composed. Maybe hearing about the money had given her some comfort.

"Here," I said, offering her one plate. "You need to eat something."

"Thank you, but I really don't have an appetite," Elena said, even though she took the plate.

I set my own plate on the coffee table and sat back down, trying to appear casual. "Who was that on the phone? I couldn't help but overhear."

Elena's face brightened slightly. "Oh, that was Mr. Chadwick from the Insurance company. He was calling about Marcus' life insurance policy."

"Life insurance?" I asked, feigning ignorance. "Marcus had life insurance?"

"Apparently so," Elena said,

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   016: The Puppet Master's Tea

Elena's POV I settled into my favorite armchair with a steaming cup of chamomile tea, watching the steam curl up from the delicate porcelain as I replayed the day's events in my mind. The apartment felt so peaceful now that Isabella and Sophia were gone, dragged away by Victor's men into whatever nightmare awaited them. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. I took a slow sip of tea, savoring both the warmth and the satisfaction that filled my chest. In my previous life, I had sat in this same chair on countless sleepless nights, broken and destroyed, wondering how my perfect marriage had crumbled into such devastating betrayal. I trusted Marcus completely, believed in our love story, never suspected that my own step-sister was sharing his bed while I planned our future together. The irony was delicious. Isabella and Sophia thought they were so clever yesterday, manipulating me into signing those divorce papers with their fake pregnancy story and their crocodile tears about Marcus' suppose

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   015: Our only hope

Sophia's POV The leather seat beneath me was cold against my back, but not as cold as the fear spreading through my chest. I moved more towards Isabella, trying to put as much distance as possible between me and the mountain of muscle sitting next to me. He was steady and calm as if kidnapping people was just another Tuesday night for him. I couldn't stop replaying the last hour in my head, trying to figure out where everything went wrong. Just this morning, Isabella and I were celebrating our victory. Now we were prisoners in the back of a gangster's SUV, owing six and a half million dollars to a man who obviously collected what he was owed with a gun. "This can't be happening," Isabella whispered beside me, her voice was so quiet I barely heard it over the engine noise. "This can't be real." She was hyperventilating and she kept clenching and unclenching her fists like she was trying to wake up from a nightmare. "Isabella," I hissed under my breath, "you need to calm do

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   014: The Price of Greed

Isabella's POV "No, no, no!" I screamed, digging my heels into the carpet as Victor's man dragged me toward the door. "This is insane! You can't do this!" The man's grip on my arm was like steel and no matter how hard I struggled, I couldn't break free. Behind me, I could hear Sophia sobbing seriously as another one of Victor's thugs manhandled her toward the door. "Elena!" I twisted around to face her with desperation in my voice. "Don't let them do this! We're family!" Elena stood by the couch, her arms crossed, watching our struggle with an expression that was completely calm. Too calm. Like she was watching a movie instead of witnessing her sister-in-law and step-sister being kidnapped by dangerous criminals. "Elena, please!" Sophia wailed, tears streaming down her face. "Help us! Tell them the truth!" "The truth?" Elena tilted her head and raised a brow. "The truth is that you two convinced me to sign those divorce papers for reasons best known to you. The truth is tha

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   013: Victor Kozlov

Isabella's POV "I'm not Marcus' wife anymore.” Elena said in a surprisingly steady voice. "Explain," Victor said simply. Elena walked calmly to a side drawer where she kept her own copy of the divorce papers earlier, brought them out and handed them to Victor. "Marcus and I are divorced," she said. "These papers prove it." Victor examined the documents carefully, his expression unreadable. I watched in growing horror as his eyes scanned the signatures and dates. "According to this," Victor said slowly, "this document was prepared months ago. Before his death." "That's right," Elena said. "I'm no longer legally responsible for anything Marcus did. We have no financial connection whatsoever." "You lying bitch!" I screamed, lunging toward Elena before I could stop myself. "Those papers are fake! You made them up to get out of paying!" But before I could reach her, a hand grabbed my hair and yanked me backward. Victor's grip was like iron and the pain brought tears to my eyes. "

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   012: The shark comes hunting

Isabella's POV I couldn't stop smiling as Sophia and I settled into Elena's living room, flipping through channels on her expensive flat-screen TV. Everything had gone perfectly. Elena had signed the divorce papers yesterday without putting up much of a fight, which was surprising yet welcoming, and now I was officially in line to inherit Marcus' insurance money. My next plan was to take over the funeral plans so I could find a way to make Marcus ‘disappear’ quickly. We needed to get our plans back on track. We had lost two days already. "Can you believe how easy that was yesterday?" I whispered to Sophia, keeping my voice low even though Elena had gone to her bedroom to bring some documents. "Almost too easy," Sophia replied, curling up on the leather couch with a throw pillow. "I was expecting more of a fight from her." "You know your step-sister better. Elena has always been weak," I said dismissively. "She's one of those people who doesn't know how to fight. It's probabl

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   011: The prey is caught

Elena's POV "Well, it's just..." Isabella stammered, clearly scrambling for an excuse. "You didn't consult with me about the date. I am Marcus's sister, Elena. I should have some say in when we bury my brother." I blinked at her in confusion. "I'm sorry, I didn't think... What date would work better for you? I asked you over this morning but you were clearly not interested in working out the details with me. Now I know why." I shot her a sarcastic look. "It's not that simple," Isabella said, her voice getting higher with stress. "Thursday is completely inconvenient for me. I have... commitments that day that I can't change." Sophia jumped in to support her. "And I have my hospital appointment scheduled for Thursday," she lied smoothly. "It's a crucial checkup that I absolutely cannot miss. For the baby's health, you understand." I let my face fall in disappointment. "Oh no, I'm so sorry. I had no idea. Let me call the funeral home and see if we can change the date." "That
