Elena's POV

The fight with Julian left me feeling empty and confused. Three days married, and we were already having problems that might destroy everything.

The hotel bar was dimly lit with soft jazz music playing in the background. Only a few other guests sat scattered at tables, most of them looking like business travelers having quiet drinks alone. I chose a corner boot where I could think without being bothered.

"One glass of red wine, please," I told the bartender.

I sat alone, stirring my wine and thinking about Julian's words. Did I really love watching Marcus suffer more than I loved being married? Was I so obsessed with revenge that I couldn't focus on building a happy life?

Maybe Julian was right. Maybe I was damaged in ways that made me unfit for marriage.

The wine tasted bitter, or maybe that was just my mood. I kept replaying our fight in my head, wondering if I should go back upstairs and apologize. But apologize for what? For protecting myself? For making s

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   097:The truth about Trevor

Julian's POV I watched Elena's face as she sat beside me on the bed, her brown eyes searched mine for answers. The relief that flooded through me was almost overwhelming. For years, she shut me down, putting walls up and running away from emotions. She was so serious about leaving earlier but now she was finally ready to stay and listen. Elena looked down at her hands. "I'm listening now." "After we graduated from college, I started working on developing my software. You remember how obsessed I was with that project." I smiled slightly at the memory. "I was so focused on building something that would change everything." "I remember. You barely slept for months while we were students." "That's when I met Sarah. She was working for a tech magazine, writing articles about new innovations in software development. She interviewed me about my project." I ran my hand through my hair, remembering how charmed I was by her interest. "She was beautiful, intelligent, and she seemed genuinely

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   096: The weight of doubt

Elena's POV The silence in the room was so thick I could almost taste it. Julian had just asked me to leave if I wanted to. He turned around and stood with his back to me, his shoulders rigid. He ran his hands through his dark hair in that frustrated way he did when he tried to hold himself together. I could see the tension in every line of his body, and something twisted painfully in my chest. "Julian, I—" I started, but my voice cracked. He didn't turn around. "You what, Elena?" His voice was quiet, but I could hear the hurt underneath. "You're sorry? You didn't mean it? You were just protecting yourself?" I opened my mouth to say exactly that, but the words died in my throat. Because wasn't that exactly what I always did? Every time Julian tried to get close, every time he showed me love, I found a reason to push him away. I found a reason to doubt him. "You know what the worst part is?" Julian finally turned to face me, and the pain in his green eyes made my heart clench. "It

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   095: Breaking point

Julian Gray's POV After her brutal reply to me, Elena opened the door to leave and then stopped in her tracks. Did she have a change of heart? She then slammed the door so hard the entire suite shook. When she turned around to face me with rage burning in her eyes like fire. I'd never seen her this angry, not even during her worst business disagreements. She walked toward me with anger radiating from every step. "You accused me of partnering with your enemies to bring you down! You said Trevor and I should get ready for a fight!" "Elena, I am upset. I didn't mean..." "You didn't mean to threaten me? You didn't mean to show me exactly what kind of man you really are?" I stared at my wife, confused by her reaction. "Elena, I was defending myself against your false accusations." "False accusations?" Elena's voice rose with each word. "Julian, you admitted you left Sarah Richardson at the altar! You admitted you took her company!" "If you will just let me explain what happened wit

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   094: Marriage is over

Elena's POV I sat in the hotel lounge for another hour after Trevor Richardson left, staring at his business card and feeling my world crumble around me. The wine made my head foggy, but it couldn't quiet the terror building in my chest. Julian left another woman at the altar. Julian stole another woman's company. Julian targeted successful women and destroyed them when they trusted him completely. How could I have been so stupid? How could I have let another man get close enough to hurt me? Three years ago, I swore I would never trust anyone again after what Marcus did. But Julian seemed so different, so genuine, so patient with my walls and my fears. What if his patience was just part of his plan? What if everything about our relationship was calculated to make me vulnerable? I thought about the merger documents I signed, combining Phoenix Advisory with Julian's company. I thought about all the times Julian encouraged me to trust him with my secrets, to be more open about

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   093: Panic sets in

Elena's POV I stared at Trevor Richardson, my mind racing as his words sank in. Julian left another woman at the altar. Julian stole another woman's company. Julian had done to Sarah Richardson exactly what Marcus did to me. "I don't believe you," I whispered, but even as I said it, I felt doubt creeping into my heart. "Elena, I understand this is hard to hear. But you need to know the truth about the man you married." "Julian is nothing like Marcus. Julian invested his own money in my company. Julian merged his business with mine and left me in charge." "Did he really? Or did Julian position himself to take control of Phoenix-Gray Industries just like he took control of my sister's company four years ago?" My hands started shaking. "What do you mean?" "Elena, think about the merger documents you signed. Think about the legal structure of Phoenix-Gray Industries. Who actually controls the company now?" I tried to remember the specific details of our merger agreement, but my m

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   092: Horrifying doubts

Elena's POV I sat alone at my corner boot, staring at the blank business card and feeling like the world was spinning around me. The stranger's words echoed in my mind: "Julian is not someone you should trust completely." How could I have been so stupid? How could I have trusted another man so completely after what Marcus did to me? Three years ago, I swore I would never let anyone get close enough to hurt me again. But then Julian came along with his kind words and patient smile, and I forgot every lesson Marcus taught me about betrayal. I should have learned. I should have stayed guarded. I should have never trusted any man again, no matter how genuine he seemed. But Julian felt different. Julian invested ten million dollars in my company. Julian proposed with a two-million-dollar ring. Julian merged his business with mine and left me as CEO of our combined empire. Or did he do all of that for other reasons? Reasons that had nothing to do with love? I took another sip o
