Chapter Eight

 

Edwards slipped into the armchair confronting the intermediate screen. He took the bottle of Coke aside the monitor. Having a mouth watering sip, acid effects trailed down the back of his throat. He halted, eyes fastened to the left screen. He put the Coke onto the table, leaned forward, peering into monitor.

A woman stood in the lobby’s center.

At first, Edwards thought it was Jennifer, but the body too tall and skinny to be the woman cop. She moved toward the cameras, tilting her head. The woman made dangerous eye contact with Edwards. Then she pulled an object from her back pocket. Stanley’s eyes narrowed. He leaped from the chair! The camera in the lobby’s center exploded! Edwards crawled under the desk on elbows and knees. He pressed his body into the tight compartment.

 The surveillance room remained quiet. Edwards felt safe to come out from under the desk. He stood up straight brushed off his uniform. Glancing at the monitors, static swayed over the screens, then
