Justice ComplexGary Bates sat in the police officers’ terminal at Justice Complex. He skimmed the room as officer Max Donovan leaned against the file cabinet, referring to the notes of a case gone cold.Glancing across the room, Bates watched Dale Daniels, Walter Newton, and Jennifer Woods with coffees and donuts at their desks. Their stations littered with registers. Bates glared at the three, speculating if they each had something to hide. Night Shift Edwards picked up his pace as he drew closer to the units. Hanes’s head drooped toward his chest. He locked his eyes. His breath trapped in his throat. Edwards didn’t care. He headed toward Ferry Street then turned left onto Hazelnut Park. Spotting a blazing campfire in the distance, the man headed toward the park’s entrance. He kneeled behind a tree watching two men and a woman. They wore heavy army coats and boots with combat gear. He overheard them talking seated in folded chairs. A red and white cooler rested a few feet away from the bonfire. They sipped from flasks, opened packages of granola and protein bars.He lowered himself hurdling against the tree trunk watching them. They would look for Debbie soon.The stranger stepped into the darkness stalked over toward bushes sure enough Debbie crouched there, peeing in the snow.He stepped on sprigs. Stanley’s alarm clock went off at 9:00 PM that morning. He struck the button at the top of the clock turning off the buzz. When that didn’t work, he slammed his fist down, knocking the clock on the floor. Stanley stood, stretching. He walked over to the window. Morning sun ricocheted off of his smooth, bare chest. He glared at the fresh snow. Thick clouds carried a gray, white mass overlapping in the sky. Stanley shook his head trying to clear his fuzzy brain. He wobbled out into the hallway toward the bathroom. A quick glimpse in the mirror before racking his fingers through his blonde hair, he thought about dying it. More of the Russian features penetrated his face with strong cheekbones. He stared into his blues. Then his gaze slipped to the scar on the left cheek. Edwards slipped into the armchair confronting the intermediate screen. He took the bottle of Coke aside the monitor. Having a mouth watering sip, acid effects trailed down the back of his throat. He halted, eyes fastened to the left screen. He put the Coke onto the table, leaned forward, peering into monitor.A woman stood in the lobby’s center.At first, Edwards thought it was Jennifer, but the body too tall and skinny to be the woman cop. She moved toward the cameras, tilting her head. The woman made dangerous eye contact with Edwards. Then she pulled an object from her back pocket. Stanley’s eyes narrowed. He leaped from the chair! The camera in the lobby’s center exploded! Edwards crawled under the desk on elbows and knees. He pressed his body into the tight compartment.The surveillance room remained quiet.
