“Where am I?” I asked as I opened my eyes.

The smell of bleach and isopropyl alcohol hit me before I could open my eyes. My eyelids felt heavy, like they were taped shut. The first thing I did was move my right hand. I dragged it slowly across the coarse white sheet, my palm flattening against the lower curve of my stomach.

“Easy, Emma. Don’t try to move just yet.” Dr. Whitman’s voice was steady, her hand resting gently on my shoulder.

I forced my eyes open, the bright fluorescent lights stinging my pupils. “My baby,” I whispered, my voice sounding like gravel. “Dr. Whitman, please. Is the baby—”

The door to the room clicked open, cutting me off.

Michael rushed in first, his tie loosened, his dark hair a messy tangle. Right behind him was Zara. She was wearing a different blouse than the one I’d seen her in an hour ago, or was it yesterday? Time felt broken. Her eyes were red rimmed, her face pale.

The moment I saw them, the fog in my brain cleared, replaced by a heat. The image of them on the sofa flashed in my mind.

“Get out,” I croaked. I tried to push myself up on my elbows, but a sharp, blinding pain tore through my abdomen, making me gasp. The IV line in my left hand tautened, the plastic needle digging into my vein.

Zara pulled the door shut. She didn’t look guilty. She didn't look sad. She walked toward the foot of the bed, completely ignoring Dr. Whitman, who was watching the scene with a tight, professional frown.

“Dr. Whitman,” I choked out, my eyes locked on Zara. “Tell them to leave. Please. Make them leave.”

“I think I will give you some time to have a family talk,” The doctor said, bowed, and walked away.

“You shameless fellow!” I cursed.

“Babe, should we tell her the whole truth?” Zara asked, keeping her gaze fixed on me.

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the room. The heart monitor beeped, loud and mocking.

I let out a weak, breathless laugh, looking past Zara to my husband. “Michael, what is she talking about? Tell her she’s insane. Tell her to get out of here.”

Michael didn’t look at me. He kept his eyes fixed on the linoleum floor, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek. He didn’t say a word. His silence felt like a heavy stone crushing the remaining air out of my lungs.

“Michael?” My voice cracked, descending into a whisper. “Michael, look at me.”

He stayed entirely still.

“He won’t look at you, Emma, because he knows it’s over,” Zara said, stepping closer to the bedside. She lifted her hands to show me a beautiful diamond ring on her fingers. “We’ve been married for a year. A real marriage. Legally binding.”

“You’re lying,” I breathed, shaking my head violently against the stiff pillow. “We’ve been married for four years. You were at my wedding, Zara! You were my maid of honor!”

“A wedding paid for by your father’s estate,” Zara replied smoothly, her face completely expressionless. “Which is exactly why Michael had to stay with you a little longer. The trust fund, Emma. Your father’s will was very specific. If you died, or if you got divorced without an heir, the entire Whitfield commercial real estate portfolio reverts to the Stanford Corporation if Michael is still your spouse. But if you walk away, you take half of it with you. We couldn't have that. So we waited for you to trust him enough to sign everything off to himt.”

My mind spun, trying to piece the words together, but they wouldn't fit. My best friend. My husband. A year ago?

“Michael, say something!” I shrieked, struggling against the sheets again. The pain in my stomach flared, a sharp, tearing sensation that made my vision black out at the edges, but I didn't care. I grabbed the metal guardrail of the bed, trying to pull myself toward him. “Tell me she’s lying! Tell me this is some sick joke!”

Michael finally raised his head. His eyes were completely dead, devoid of the warmth he had given me for years. “It’s true, Emma.”

The words were short. A executioner's blade.

“You... you took everything from me,” I whispered, the tears finally burning my eyes. “The treatments... the doctors... you told me you wanted a family with me.”

“He needed a placeholder while we cleared the legal hurdles with your father’s executors,” Zara said, her hand drifting down to rest flat against her own stomach. A small, triumphant smile touched her lips. “And honestly, we don’t need your womb anymore. I’m three months pregnant, Emma. With the legitimate Stanford heir. Michael’s mother already gave us her blessing.”

I stared at her hand on her stomach. Three months. She had been pregnant when she held my hand during my last negative test result a month ago.

“You’re monsters,” I choked out, the room starting to tilt. The physical pain in my abdomen was growing, a deep throb that felt like it was pulling me under. “Both of you. Get out. Get out!”

Zara turned to Michael. “Come on. We’ve said what we need to say. Let’s leave.”

She paused for a while, a wicked grin forming on her lips.

“Oh, there’s one more thing,” she added, turning around quickly to face me once again.

Michael’s hand slid down to Zara’s waist as the door swung shut, his fingers splaying across the small of her back to guide her into the hallway. The gold of his wedding band caught the corridor light one last time before the door clicked into the frame, locking me out of their world completely. The silence that followed was suffocating. I sat on the edge of the mattress, my feet dangling over the floor, staring at the cup of water, my throat completely dry. The door opened again, a soft rustle of fabric breaking the quiet. Dr. Whitman walked back in alone. The chart in her hands looked heavy. She kept her eyes fixed entirely on me, her expression dropping its professional mask for something deeply heavy.“Emma,” she said softly, moving to the side of the bed. She didn't check the monitors. She just pulled the rolling stool over and sat down so we were at eye level. “We have the results of the second blood panel and the ultrasound.”My hand, completely on instinct, crawled back acros

Michael reached out for it, and shoved it towards me. “I don’t need your help, Michael!” I spat. “Not until you tell me that all of these is a lie!” “We have a timeline to keep, Emma,” Zara said. She stood near the foot of the bed, perfectly composed, while Michael hovered a step behind her like a shadow. “The sooner this is settled, the better it is for everyone.”“A timeline,” I repeated, a bitter laugh cutting through my raw throat. “A year of marriage behind my back. Three months of a pregnancy you hid while pretending to be my friend. What was the timeline, Zara? When were you going to tell me? Or were you just waiting for me to die on those stairs?”Zara tilted her head, her expression terrifyingly clinical. “The stairs was your doing. We had nothing to do with that. Honestly, the plan was much cleaner before any of this.” She stepped closer. “Michael needed the Whitfield assets

Emma’s POV The steering wheel gripped back. My hands white knuckle squeezed the leather as the tears finally spilled, hot and blinding, blurring the oncoming traffic into smears of red and yellow. I slammed my foot onto the gas, the engine roaring as I tore out of Zara’s neighborhood.“It isn't real. It isn't real.”But the image of his fingers dug into her waist stayed burned behind my eyelids.“I’m not going anywhere, Em.” Michael’s voice echoed in my head, clear as a bell, from the night we got the results of our second failed IVF cycle. He had knelt by the side of our bed, rubbing his thumb over my knuckles while I sobbed into the pillows. “The Stanford name doesn’t mean a damn thing if you aren’t the one carrying it. We will keep trying. Just you and me. I swear it. And if it doesn’t work out, I’ll forever still love you the same.” He had sworn it. On his knees.A sob tore from my throat, raw and choking. I wiped my face with the back of my sleeve, nearly swerving into the shou

Emma’s POV “Congratulations, Mrs. Stanford. You’re pregnant. Three weeks, according to the bloodwork.”Dr. Whitman’s voice sounded like it was coming from the end of a long tunnel. My fingers twitched against my knees. I looked down at the small slip of thermal paper she slid across the desk. A black-and-white smudge.“Three weeks?” My voice cracked. I reached out, my hand shaking so violently the paper rattled against the wood. I gripped the edges of the ultrasound photo, digging my fingernails into the border just to anchor myself.“Three weeks,” Dr. Whitman repeated with a warm, professional smile. “Given the history, we’ll want to monitor your hormone levels closely, but everything looks perfect right now.” Three years of negative tests. Three years of synthetic hormones that made my skin hot and my mood swing like a pendulum. I stared at the smudge, and for a second, the sterile white office faded. I was back in the dining room of the Stanford estate last Christmas. Michael’s m
