Chapter 4

Autor: Ginger Peach
The bodyguards immediately understood Anastasia's order. They hoisted me up and threw me into the water.

It was winter, and the pond was freezing. I shivered violently the moment I hit the water. I scrambled for the shore, but a firm hand shoved me back down.

"Mr. Beck, we can't let you up without the ring," one bodyguard said, his voice flat and cold. "If you want this to end soon, you'd better find it fast."

I bit my lip and resigned myself. I floated and fumbled in the icy, murky water, my fingers probing the dirt over and over.

Dirty water seeped into my sleeves, numbing my fingertips until they almost lost all feeling.

From dawn to dusk, I kept searching. I only managed to find the ring just as Anastasia's parents were about to return.

Clutching it tightly, I made my way step by step to Anastasia's room and gently knocked on the door.

Anastasia opened it, her gaze heavy. "I'm gonna let it go this time, but you'd better stay away from Philip from now on."

She flipped her palm, and the ring I had worked so hard to retrieve floated lightly out the window of the hallway, vanishing into the dark night.

"Philip doesn't like this design. I'll make him a new one."

I watched the ring disappear into the darkness and forced a small smile.

That made sense. She had already decided that the past was a burden, and there was no room for a ring marked by old memories.

Despite Anastasia's parents' lingering reservations about Philip, they couldn't go against her insistence.

Reluctantly, they began meticulously planning the engagement party. It was an extravagant affair, every detail designed to impress.

During the event, guests kept sneaking glances at me.

"Tough luck for Mason. The woman he worked so hard to get back is marrying someone else."

"They grew up together and were perfect for each other. Everyone thought they'd end up together. I honestly never saw this coming."

"If I were Mason, I'd slap that cheating couple instead of attending their engagement party."

Meanwhile, Philip, dressed in a top-tier designer suit, strolled toward the center of the ballroom.

Anastasia held his hand, the love in her eyes almost spilling over.

She cleared her throat. Her usual casual tone faded into one of composed seriousness as she announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to formally introduce—"

Before she could finish, the lights in the ballroom flickered twice and went out completely.

In the darkness, the sharp clatter of chairs mixed with screams, turning the scene into utter chaos.

I instinctively stepped back into a corner, but a hand suddenly clamped onto my wrist, and a foul-smelling handkerchief was pressed over my nose and mouth.

A dizzying, spinning sensation hit me instantly. I struggled desperately, and in the last moments before consciousness slipped away, I could only hear the deafening screams around me.

After God knows how long, I heard Philip's intentionally low growl through the chaos.

"Damn it! Who told you to make a move at the engagement party? Besides, I told you to kidnap me and blame it on Mason. Why did you take him, too?

"You bunch of idiots! It doesn't matter how realistic you act now. You can forget about the final payment! You've ruined my whole plan!"

My awareness slowly returned, and I immediately pieced things together.

It was another one of Philip's schemes, though this time, it didn't seem to go as he expected.

During the struggle, I had felt a gun holster on the other person's waist. These weren't the small-time goons Philip had hired.

What made my stomach drop further was that the voice of the leader sounded disturbingly familiar.

Anastasia bowed deeply before the abbot. "If I offered the rest of my life, could I earn a chance at another life?"The abbot's eyes were soft with sorrow, his voice steady. "God's plan is beyond our understanding. You wonder about the life to come, but how can you be sure this life isn't the answer to prayers you prayed long ago?"At first, Anastasia didn't understand the depth of his words. It only became clear on a night as ordinary as any other. She scrolled through Mason's latest social media post, showing a video of a little puppy. Her gaze softened, though a sudden wave of drowsiness hit her hard.In that hazy moment, she felt like a bystander, watching an entirely different life unfold. In that life, her parents had forced her back to the Kains. She regained her memories sooner than she had in this life and married Mason. Not long after, Mason was diagnosed with ALS, but unlike in reality, he didn't see it as a burden. Instead, he smiled and said he would face it together

Katherine's voice carried a cold edge, her gaze sharp and icy.I caught the danger in her eyes and quickly grabbed her finger. I tilted my head with a pleading smile. "The car's ready, right? Let's go."I gently guided her outside, and when I glanced back at Anastasia, my tone carried a hint of helplessness."I'm really not angry with you. You don't owe me an apology either. Just live happily with Philip. That's the best way you can repay me."I meant it sincerely. After I was diagnosed with ALS in my previous life, Anastasia had stayed by my side, taking care of me. Even if at first it may have been out of obligation, she truly stayed with me for life. Many of the choices I made in this life were to repay that devotion.Since I chose to let things be, I never thought of resenting her.I was content with my life now and didn't want it disturbed. On the day Katherine and I got married, we received gifts from Anastasia's parents and other friends, along with a massive anonymous

Anastasia didn't dare imagine what would happen if Mason refused to forgive her.He was the love she had cherished since childhood, the man she had sworn to marry. Back then, even the slightest frown of his would break her heart. And now, she had hurt him so deeply.Anastasia stood before her parents at the entrance to the Kains' villa."Mom, Dad, please tell me where Mason is. I'll make things right—""That's enough!"Eloise snapped, unable to bear it any longer. She held Anastasia's arm, her eyes filled with sorrow that Anastasia couldn't decipher."Mason broke off your engagement the moment you lost your memories! Even if you beg him, what good would it do? He's not coming back!"Her voice dropped, heavy with exhaustion. "He didn't want to burden you. That's why he insisted we stop trying to restore your memory and chose to go abroad on his own.""Burden?"Anastasia repeated the word instinctively, as if she'd been burned.Eloise closed her eyes, inhaling deeply before fin

A tall, clear figure suddenly appeared in Anastasia's memory. The boy stood among a courtyard full of gardenias, smiling warmly at her. "The orchids in the greenhouse have bloomed. Let's go see them together."Anastasia watched herself rushing forward, eager to reach him, but the moment she touched him, everything shattered, scattering into a sky full of butterflies. From the air came his sorrowful, ethereal sigh. "It's over between us.""Mason!"In the hospital room, Anastasia's eyes snapped open, a startled cry tearing through the silence."Anastasia! You're awake!" Philip exclaimed happily, but he quickly started crying. "I'm so glad you finally woke up… I didn't know what I'd do if you didn't… Your parents would hate me, and I'd feel so guilty…"I shouldn't have made you place that rosary for me. It's all my fault…"Anastasia listened quietly, her gaze landing on the man she once treasured above all when she had lost her memories. She croaked, "Where's Mason?"Philip fr

Katherine was just like Anastasia?Would she one day suddenly forget me, just like Anastasia did? Would she hurt me for someone else?I immediately dismissed the thought.Katherine wasn't Anastasia. She would never do that. But that half-finished remark of hers still left me feeling uneasy. She was always like this, speaking in fragments and leaving me to guess the rest.I hung my head and stepped into the yard. Then I grabbed a snow shovel and slammed it down into the snow a few times, imagining the white ground as Katherine's teasing, mysterious face.Clang. The shovel slipped from my grip and hit the ground with a dull thud.I bent to pick it up, but my arm froze midair, completely immobile. Before I could call out, I was pulled into a warm, soft embrace.Leaning against Katherine, I could hear her calm, steady heartbeat, one beat after another, like a reassuring drum I could sink into. The doctor had said that ALS was an incurable disease. All one could do was slow its

"You always said you never get to see the moon on your birthday," the boy's voice choked with emotion. "But it doesn't matter anymore. If there's no moon, I'll just give you a piece of the Milky Way."He reached out to wipe her tears. The warmth of his finger made her chest ache.Anastasia struggled desperately in the water, not for air, but to clear the fog and see his face. Her head felt as if it was being pierced by a thousand needles at once. The pain curled her into a ball, but she refused to let go of that sliver of clarity. For what felt like an eternity, before her consciousness fully blurred, she finally saw the boy's face clearly. Those smiling eyes belonged to Mason."Mason…" Anastasia murmured, and the moment the water swallowed her, all the memories she had locked away rushed back like a flood breaking through a dam.-Since arriving abroad, the days had stretched endlessly. From the first struggles with the unfamiliar environment to the slow settling into routine,

The leader sounded like one of Anastasia's rivals, the same man she had driven to ruin not long ago during a corporate battle. After a long pause, the kidnappers finally started a video call. "Ms. Kain," one of them sneered, "you've got two people here. One's your childhood sweetheart of 20 years,

I gathered up Anastasia's old belongings in my room and tossed them into the fire. The flames roared, sending waves of heat over me, but I felt as if I were standing in freezing water. For the next few days, the courtyard was alive with the clanging and scraping of demolition. The garden of garde

"I just wanted her to stay with me for a few more days. Just a few days, that's all!"By the end, Philip's voice was cracking, and he was close to tears.I stood there quietly, listening. My eyes, however, drifted past him and landed on Anastasia. She was staring straight at me; her whole body wa

"Ms. Kain lost her memory, and she refuses to come back with us. But we've contacted one of the top neurologists in the country. He can help her recover soon."It was the same conversation, exactly like the last time I found Anastasia Kain after she went missing.Only this time, there was no joy o
